Heart region pulse is rapid (Shu Mai, rapid pulse). The main symptom is thirst. Sores appear on the tongue. Urine is red and difficult to pass. Eyes are dim and painful.
Liver region pulse is rapid. Main symptoms include eye pain, corneal opacity (Yi Mo, nebula), excessive tearing, and blurred vision. Dizziness and vertigo. Headache. Head wind disease (Tou Feng).
Spleen region pulse is rapid. Main symptoms include bad breath, regurgitation (Fan Wei). Toothache, and receding gums with bleeding (Ya Xuan). Eating much but not feeling full. Inability to lift the limbs due to weakness.
Lung region pulse is rapid. Main symptoms include coughing and spitting blood. Foul smell in the throat and red eyes. Constipation. Spots and prickly heat on the face.
Kidney region pulse is rapid. Main symptoms include unceasing Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome). Hematuria and stranguria (Xue Lin). Genital sores and foot ulcers. Yang abscesses and damp itching.
Floating pulse (Fu Mai) (Feels insufficient upon heavy pressing, abundant upon light pressing, detectable upon turning the hand.) Knifelike pulse (Kou Mai) (Weak upon light pressing, solid on sides but hollow in center.) Surging pulse (Hong Mai) (Strong upon light pressing.) Full pulse (Shi Mai) (Floating and large/tall.)
Wiry pulse (Xian Mai) (Rapid and like a bowstring.) Tight pulse (Jin Mai) (Rapid and tight like a bowstring.) Slippery pulse (Hua Mai) (Rapid and slightly smooth/flowing, like pearls rolling, slightly floating.) Deep pulse (Chen Mai) (Abundant upon heavy pressing, insufficient upon light pressing, requires heavy pressure to detect.)
Minute pulse (Wei Mai) (Deep, seeming to exist yet non-existent.) Hidden pulse (Fu Mai) (Extremely deep, pressing to the bone.) Weak pulse (Ruo Mai) (Deep and weak.) Slow pulse (Chi Mai) (Three beats per respiration cycle, coming and going very slowly.)
Relaxed pulse (Huan Mai) (Slow, seeming to exist yet non-existent.) Choppy pulse (Se Mai) (Slow and extremely thin, like rain soaking into sand.) Rapid pulse (Shu Mai) (Six beats per respiration cycle, coming and going very fast.)
The above seven exterior pulses and eight interior pulses total fifteen pulse types. They can be observed simply at the four positions (Cun, Guan, Chi on both wrists).
Floating pulse belongs to Metal. Knifelike pulse belongs to Fire. Slippery pulse belongs to Water. Full pulse belongs to Fire. Wiry pulse belongs to Wood. Tight pulse belongs to Wood. Surging pulse belongs to Fire (Observe such patterns and keep them firmly in mind). Minute pulse belongs to Earth.
Deep pulse belongs to Water. Relaxed pulse belongs to Earth. Choppy pulse belongs to Metal. Slow pulse belongs to Earth. Hidden pulse belongs to Wood. Soft pulse (Ru Mai) belongs to Water. Weak pulse belongs to Metal.
The above pulses are diagnosed according to their positions. If the six positions of the pulses do not follow their original positions, they are pathological pulses. Regarding the seven exterior and eight interior pulses, diagnose each position sequentially. Determine which Zang or Fu organ is diseased and what pathology it indicates. Diagnosis based on meridians ensures recovery.
In years of Northern and Southern Governance, the Heavenly Command shifts accordingly. In years of Northern Governance, the Heavenly Command shifts to the right. (Years of Yi Geng, Ding Ren, Bing Xin, Wu Gui are Northern Governance.)
The Classics state: In years of Northern Governance, the Heavenly Command shifts to the right. The Sovereign faces North, the Sovereign's command shifts to the left; Ministers face South, Ministerial transformation hides to the right. Thus, the response occurs beforehand. When Three Yang Qi is above, the Right Chi pulse does not respond. When Three Yang Qi is below, the Hand Cun pulse does not respond. This is Yin and Yang interacting above and below without reversal.
In years of Southern Governance, the Heavenly Command shifts to the left.
Annotation: In years of Southern Governance, the Heavenly Command shifts to the left. The Sovereign faces South, the Sovereign's command shifts to the right; Ministers face North, Ministerial transformation returns to the left. Thus, the response occurs afterwards. When Three Yin Qi is above, the Right Cun pulse does not respond. When Three Yang Qi is below, the Left Chi pulse does not respond. This is Yin and Yang failing to interact above and below, requiring reversal of response.
Heaven and Earth are the parents of change; Yin and Yang are the pathways of ascent and descent.
Annotation: Heavenly patterns display phenomena, while Luck (Yun Qi) governs divisions. Yin and Yang reveal the causes of ascent and descent; Heaven and Earth generate the roots of change. Six Qi divide the steps of surplus and deficit; Five Movements combine with Tai Shao palaces. Therefore, motion and stillness generate each other, and adverse and smooth factors interact. These are the roots of initial/final victory/reversal and the markers of excess/deficiency. For example, in Zi-Wu years, Shaoyin governs Heaven. Its transformation marker places Heat in its position. Thus, Shaoyin syndromes present with a surging, large, and scattered pulse, which is the command of Ministerial Fire.
Yin-Yang changes, victory and reversal differ or align. Deduce the source of the six positions, list the roots of the three origins. Due to Qi changes, one can predict auspiciousness and inauspiciousness.
Annotation: Yin-Yang change refers to the extremity of Yin-Yang numbers, from which change arises. Why? After Winter Solstice, from Taiyin arises Shaoyang; Shaoyang transforms to generate Yangming; Yangming transforms to generate Taiyang; Taiyang transforms to generate Jueyin; Jueyin transforms to generate Shaoyin; Shaoyin transforms to regenerate Taiyin, combining with the sources of the six positions and three origins. It responds to the year's Six Qi victory and reversal, manifesting omens of fortune and misfortune.
Heaven and Earth ascend and descend; Yin and Yang circulate and operate; Five Elements generate each other; all things respond to seasons.
Annotation: Heavenly Qi descends, Earthly Qi ascends; the two Qi interact and generate all things. Things arise due to Yang Qi and mature/receive due to Yin Qi. Is this not the governance of Yin-Yang cycles? Each inherits Five Element creation, following seasonal commands, adhering to the ways of growth, transformation, and storage.
Six Qi respond to changes; Zang-Fu transmit diseases. Pathologies stem from the Twelve Branches and correspond to the Ten Stems. Thus, on Zi-Wu days, Shaoyin governs Heaven.
Annotation: Zi is the root, belonging to Kidney. Its transformation is Cold; its disease is waist and leg pain. Wu is the marker, belonging to Heart. Its transformation is Heat; its disease is timidity and palpitations. The Bao (Pericardium) should hurt.
On Chou-Wei days, Taiyin governs Heaven.
Annotation: Chou is the root, belonging to Lung. Its transformation is Dryness; its disease is cough, shortness of breath, and muscle fever. Wei is the marker, belonging to Spleen. Its transformation is Dampness; its disease is wheezing, reverse flow, choking, heavy body, and pus-blood in stool.
On Yin-Shen days, Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire) governs Heaven.
Annotation: Yin is the root, belonging to Sanjiao. Its transformation is Blazing; its disease is latent accumulation and erratic Qi. Shen is the marker, belonging to Gallbladder. Its transformation is Wind; its disease is stretching, chronic fatigue, and lethargy.
On Si-Hai days, Jueyin governs Heaven.
Annotation: Si is the root, belonging to Pericardium. Its transformation is Heat; its disease is chest and epigastric distension/pain. Hai is the marker, belonging to Liver. Its transformation is Wind; its disease is red eyes, dizziness, tremors, and headache.
On Chen-Xu days, Taiyang governs Heaven.
Annotation: Chen is the root, belonging to Small Intestine. Its transformation is Heat; its disease is heart pain, stiff tongue, and umbilical abdominal pain. Xu is the marker, belonging to Bladder. Its transformation is Cold; its disease is lower back pain, scrotal swelling/drooping, and difficult urination.
On Mao-You days, Yangming governs Heaven.
Annotation: Mao is the root, belonging to Large Intestine. Its transformation is Dryness; its disease is constipation, tenesmus, and umbilical abdominal pain. You is the marker, belonging to Stomach. Its transformation is Dampness; its disease is periodic irritability/fever, vomiting, and anorexia.
Five Movements and Six Qi multiply; fate is determined by Tianfu (Heavenly符) years.
Annotation: When Movement transformation corresponds similarly, it is called multiplication. Hence, it is named Tianfu year. For example, in Ding-Hai year, Wood Movement. Ding is Shao Jue; Jueyin governs Heaven. Qi and Movement both meet Wood imagery, hence called Tianfu Suìhuì. If it corresponds with the position of the approaching time, it is called Taiyi Tianfu year. For example, in Wu-Wu year, Wu is Shaoyin, Ministerial Fire governing Heaven. Wu is Fire. Luck and Movement arrive together, positions and transformations align. Hence, it is called Taiyi Tianfu year. Responding to the year's Five Movements and Six Qi, matching periods converge. However, variations in Five Movements and Six Qi apply from Zi to Si, where Hand Three Yin and Three Yang are active. From Wu to Hai, Foot Three Yin and Three Yang are active. Thus, Six Qi follow Five Movements to combine with Tai Shao palace changes, and heavenly signs verify omens of fortune and misfortune.
Wood, Fire, Metal, Water; Movement transformation in Northern Governance years.
Annotation: In Northern Governance years, Wood, Fire, Metal, and Water movements all belong to Northern Governance. Sovereign faces North, Ministers face South. Governing Heaven Qi acts as Hand Meridians. From the day before Lichun (Start of Spring) to Dayahan, the Left Interstitial Qi of the Ruling Earth acts as the response of the First Qi. In Zi-Wu years, Shaoyin governs Heaven.
Annotation: Shaoyin Ministerial Fire is above, governing Heaven Qi. Its transformation is Heat, corresponding to the marker; Cold corresponds to the root. Its creatures are feathered. Birth number is two, completion number is seven. Left interstitial Heavenly Qi is Taiyin Damp Earth responding; Right interstitial Heavenly Qi is Jueyin Wind Wood responding.
Yangming Dry Metal is below, ruling Earth Qi. Its transformation is Dryness, corresponding to the marker; Dampness corresponds to the root. Its creatures are shelled. Birth number is four, completion number is nine. Left interstitial Earthly Qi is Taiyang Cold Water responding; Right interstitial Earthly Qi is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire responding.
In Chou-Wei years, Taiyin governs Heaven.
Annotation: Taiyin Damp Earth is above, governing Heaven Qi. Its transformation is Dampness, corresponding to the marker; Dryness corresponds to the root. Its creatures are naked/bare-skinned. Birth number is five, completion number is ten. Left interstitial Heavenly Qi is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire responding; Right interstitial Heavenly Qi is Shaoyin Ministerial Fire responding. Taiyang Cold Water is below, ruling Earth Qi. Its transformation is Cold, corresponding to the marker; Heat corresponds to the root. Its creatures are scaled. Birth number is one, completion number is six. Left interstitial Earthly Qi is Jueyin Wind Wood responding; Right interstitial Earthly Qi is Yangming Dry Metal responding.
In Yin-Shen years, Shaoyang governs Heaven.
