For unmarried women, if the six pulses (cun, guan, chi on both hands) are full and robust, it indicates they have not yet had sexual intercourse. If the pulse feels soft like cotton, it is not an unmarried woman.
For women under thirty years old, if the chi pulse (located near the wrist crease, reflecting kidney and mingmen status) is faint and thin, this signifies a decline in blood and qi, indicating conditions such as metrorrhagia (heavy vaginal bleeding outside of menstruation) or leukorrhea (abnormal vaginal discharge). If the chi pulse suddenly becomes surging and rapid, it may indicate retained blood (stagnant blood) or wind-lao (consumptive disease complicated by wind pathogen). If the guan pulse (located at the midpoint of the radial artery, reflecting spleen, stomach, liver, and gallbladder) is wiry and urgent, it indicates heat syndrome; cool-natured herbs should be used for harmonization to restore peace.
If the cun pulse (located at the distal end of the radial artery, reflecting heart and lung) is surging and large, while the chi pulse is faint and slow, this represents a reversal of yin and yang. Symptoms include heaviness in the four limbs, soreness and pain in all joints, and stiffness and tension in the back and waist. This also indicates irregular blood vessels; tonifying blood will bring relief.
If the cun pulse position is surging, floating, filling the fingers, and rapid, it indicates heat in the upper jiao with swollen lips; one should promote dispersion to calm the Blood Sea (a general term for the uterus and Chong and Ren meridians). If the Heart area (left cun) Blood Sea pulse is surprisingly large, and both chi pulses are deep, thin, and faint, appearing almost absent, this is a severe lower jiao pulse pattern. Yang disturbing yin deficiency leads to metrorrhagia and slippery miscarriage; if the pulse is palpable when lightly pressed but weak and faint upon heavy pressure, it indicates metrorrhagia.
If both chi pulses beat only once every three breaths and are faint, it indicates threatened abortion. If the pulse suddenly becomes deep and thin, it indicates leaking fetus (threatened miscarriage or restless fetus). If blood is exhausted, the fetus is damaged.
If the left cun and guan pulses are large, while the chi pulse is floating and choppy, it indicates metrorrhagia. If the pulse is deep and choppy, the fetus has also died. If none of the three positions yield a pulse beat per breath upon pressing, it indicates abortion.
If the pulse is large and floating, or surging, pregnancy is present. The presence of "yin bo yang bie" (yin pulsing with distinct difference from yang) also indicates pregnancy. "Yin bo yang bie" means that upon light pressure, the pulse reaches deep levels with distinct differentiation; approaching heavy pressure, the pulsation strongly touches the fingers and approaches the hand, remaining forceful upon lifting the finger. This indicates pregnancy, signifying yang transmission and yin transformation. Generally, if the Shaoyin pulse (primarily the left chi kidney pulse) beats prominently, it indicates pregnancy. This refers to the Shaoyin kidney pulse being vigorous, with yang turning into yin pulsation, without other causes for prominent beating, termed "Dong" (movement), which is different from the "Dong" pulse among the nine abnormal pulses. The Hand Shaoyin Heart meridian belongs to the heart governing blood, and the Foot Shaoyin Kidney meridian belongs to the kidney governing essence; when essence and blood converge between them, it indicates pregnancy. If the three positions have equal depth and strength without pathology, it also indicates pregnancy. The classic states: "Pulse moving at the birth gate also indicates pregnancy," meaning the pulse emerges beyond the chi position with prominent beating, termed "Dong entering the production gate."
It is held that yang pulses indicate male gender; a floating and large left pulse indicates a male fetus; a rapid and numerous right chi pulse indicates a female fetus; a deep and solid left chi pulse indicates a female fetus. If both chi pulses are rapid and numerous, it indicates twins. If both chi pulses are floating and large, two males will be born. If both chi pulses are deep and solid, two females will be born.
Additionally, according to ancient methods, if a pregnant woman walks forward and is called from behind, turning her head to the left indicates a boy, and turning to the right indicates a girl.
Pregnancy pulse methods can also estimate gestational age. Examining the guan pulse: one pause indicates one month; two pauses indicate two months. A slippery and rapid pulse indicates three months. A rapid pulse that does not scatter indicates five months. Four pauses indicate eight months. For women with tight and wiry pregnancy pulses, delivery will be easy.
