Joy and laughter both belong to Heart Fire. The *Classic of Internal Medicine* (*Huangdi Neijing*) states: The Heart houses the Spirit (*Shen*); when the Spirit is in excess, one laughs incessantly. It further states: In the Zang organs, it corresponds to the Heart; in the vocal sounds, it corresponds to laughter; in the emotions, it corresponds to joy. It also states: When Essence and Qi converge in the Heart, there is joy. Furthermore: Excessive Fire is termed "He Xi" (brilliant and expansive). In years of He Xi, diseases such as laughing, mania, and delirium occur. Additionally: When Shaoyin (Ministerial Fire) prevails, symptoms include joy and laughter.
Liu Wansu stated: Laughter, like the luxuriant growth and fresh elegance of vegetation, represents expansion, glory, and manifestation; this is the transformation of Fire. Therefore, joy is the emotion of Heart Fire. Extreme joy leading to laughter is akin to the image of roaring flames burning too intensely. Thus, pathological laughter indicates an excess of Heart Fire.
A woman suffered from incessant laughter for half a year. Physicians were at a loss, so she sought treatment from Dai Ren (Zhang Congzheng). Dai Ren said, "This is easy to treat." He prescribed over two taels of block-shaped Cangyan (Sea Salt), heated it in fire until red-hot, allowed it to cool, and ground it into fine powder. This was decocted with one large bowl of river water until it boiled three to five times. After cooling to a warm temperature, it was taken in three doses. A hairpin was used to stimulate the throat to induce vomiting, expelling five sheng of hot phlegm. Subsequently, a heat-clearing formula was administered. Since Fire is treated with bitter flavors, Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) was used. Within a few days, her laughter ceased. The *Neijing* states: "When the Spirit is in excess, there is incessant laughter." What is referred to as the Spirit is Heart Fire. Fire flares up when encountering wind; thus, the image of laughter belongs to Fire. Among the Five Elements, only Fire is associated with laughter. I once treated an elderly man who laughed incessantly and drooled. Using Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) added with Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf), Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice), his laughter stopped. For acupuncture and moxibustion treating joy and laughter, one should exclusively select the Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin. The classics state: When the Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin is disturbed, it causes redness of the face, yellowing of the eyes, and incessant laughter. One must carefully distinguish between excess, deficiency, heat, cold, and sinking conditions to select appropriate points.
Anger, in terms of Yin and Yang, arises when Yin obstructs Yang, preventing Yang from extending. The classics state: When Yin emerges into Yang, anger occurs. It also states: When Blood accumulates above and Qi sinks below, it causes mental distress, grievance, and irritability. Li Dongyuan stated: Those prone to anger suffer from Wind-Heat sinking downward. Anger is associated with the Liver and Gallbladder. The classics state: In the Zang organs, it corresponds to the Liver; in the emotions, it corresponds to anger. It also states: The Liver stores Blood; when Blood is in excess, anger occurs. It further states: The Gallbladder is also associated with anger.
Zhu Danxi’s formula for treating anger consists of Xiangfu Powder (Cyperi Rhizoma) six taels and Gancao Powder (Licorice Root) one tael, mixed uniformly and taken with five qian dissolved in white boiling water. Anger caused by climatic factors (Yunqi) all belong to excessive Wood. The classics state: Excessive Wood is called "Fa Sheng" (initiating growth). In years of Fa Sheng, diseases involving anger occur. It also states: In years of excessive Wood, Wind circulates widely, and severe cases result in irritability. Furthermore: In years where Earth is deficient, Wind acts excessively, and the people suffer from irritability.
Anger has contraindications regarding the frequent occurrence of Jue Ni (Reversal Cold/Stroke-like conditions). The classics state: When a person becomes extremely angry, their form and Qi become severed, causing Blood to stagnate in the upper body, leading to Bo Jue (a type of syncope due to blood rushing upward). It also states: Violent anger injures Yang. Furthermore: Anger causes Qi to rebel upward; in severe cases, it leads to hematemesis (vomiting blood) or diarrhea with undigested food. The general therapeutic principle is to overcome anger with sorrow, or to use herbs to tonify Lung Metal to pacify Liver Wood.
