Zhonghe Tang (Harmonizing Decoction): Treats sores belonging to the half-Yin half-Yang syndrome, presenting as neither fully ulcerated nor not ulcerated, neither fully swollen nor not swollen. This is caused by deficiency of Yuan Qi (Original Qi), failing to tonify and expel toxins in time.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 2 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 1.5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zao Jiao Ci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) (stir-fried), Ru Xiang (Olibanum), Mo Yao (Myrrha), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Gan Cao Jie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma node) (each 1 qian).
The above herbs are decocted with half water and half wine, and taken orally.
Neituo San (Supporting Interior Powder) (also known as Huxin San (Heart-Protecting Powder)): Within one to three days of onset, it is advisable to take more than ten doses consecutively.
Zhen Lv Dou Fen (True Mung Bean Starch) (1 liang), Ming Ru Xiang (Clear Olibanum) (0.5 liang, stir-fried slowly in a silver or earthenware vessel until dry, quickly poured out and fanned cool, then ground extremely fine).
Grind the above ingredients evenly. Take 2 to 3 qian each time, mixed with thickly decocted Gan Cao Tang (Licorice Decoction), sipping slowly from time to time, ensuring the medicine remains in the chest and diaphragm area. If toxins rush to the heart causing vomiting and rebellious qi, this formula is highly suitable. (If vomiting and rebellious qi are caused by cold, this formula should not be used; instead, acrid-warm medicines should be employed.) Danxi stated: The mung bean in this powder resolves Dan Du (Cinnabar Poison/Heat Toxin) and treats Shi Du (Stone Poison); its sweet flavor enters the Yangming Stomach meridian, and its cold nature tonifies, serving as the Sovereign herb; Ru Xiang removes malignant swelling, enters the Shaoyin Kidney meridian, has a damp nature and is good at penetrating, serving as the Assistant herb; Gan Cao has a slow nature, resolves poisons of the five metals and eight stones, and poisons of hundred herbs, serving as the Envoy herb. This formula is specifically designed for those who develop Ju (deep-seated abscesses) after taking Dan Shi (cinnabar and sulfur pills). If the Ju is not caused by Dan Shi, it may not be an essential prescription. It is also said: Neituo San has a cool nature, treats vomiting, and has the principle of descending fire.
Guolao Gao (Elderberry Paste) (Note: "Guolao" is a nickname for Gan Cao/Licorice): Treats all types of Yong Ju (carbuncles and deep-seated abscesses), reduces swelling and expels toxins, preventing toxins from attacking inward. Its efficacy cannot be fully described.
Gan Cao (Large roots, 2 jin).
Crush the Gan Cao, soak in river water overnight, knead until the juice is thick, remove all tendons and dregs, filter through silk cloth again, and simmer slowly in a silver or earthenware vessel into a paste. Store in a container. Take 1-2 spoons each time, with Wuhui Jiu (unadulterated wine) or plain hot water. It can also resolve the effects of previously taken drying or cinnabar medicines. (Ben Shi Fang uses 1 jin of Gan Cao, divided into three doses, taken with warm wine. Now saying 1-2 spoons seems too weak.)
Niupang Zhou (Arctii Root Porridge): Treats sore swellings.
Take three stems of Niupang (Arctii Fructus/Radix, here referring to root based on context of preparation) roots, wash clean, and boil until soft. Grind finely in a basin, remove fascia. Add rice to the juice to make porridge. Saltiness or blandness is optional. Taking one bowl is very effective, with no contraindications.
Jiedu San (Detoxifying Powder): Treats carbuncles and sores; best taken at the first sign of discomfort.
Xi Jiao Xie (Rhinoceros Horn Shavings - *Note: Modern substitute often used*), Chuan Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chuan Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 1 liang, chopped), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (2 liang), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (heart removed), Gan Cao (raw, chopped, each 0.5 liang).
Take 4 qian of the above mixture each time. Use 1 zhong of water, decoct to 6 fen, remove dregs. Take warm at any time.
Qingxin Neigu Jinfen San (Clear Heart and Solidify Interior Gold Powder) (also known as Jinhua San (Golden Flower Powder)).
Chen Sha (Cinnabar, ground separately), Bai Fu Ling (Poria with skin removed), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, rhizome removed), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 7.5 qian), Lv Dou Fen (Mung Bean Starch) (4 liang, ground), Bai Dou Kou Ren (Amomi Fructus Seed), Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, ground separately), Xiong Huang (Realgar, ground), Nao Zi (Borneol), She Xiang (Moschus) (all ground, each 2.5 qian).
Grind Ren Shen, Fu Ling, and Bai Dou Kou into powder, mix with the other ground medicines evenly. Take 1.5 qian each time, mixed with honey water, at any time. This medicine specifically treats malignant sores, intense heat pain, thirst, and irritability, possessing detoxifying properties.
Neizhui Du Dan (Interior-Pursuing Toxin Pill): Clears heart and detoxifies.
Da Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Xiong Huang (Realgar) (each 5 qian), Sheng She Xiang (Fresh Moschus) (1 qian), Sheng Xi Jiao (Fresh Rhinoceros Horn), Hu Po (Amber) (above separately ground fine), Hei Jiao Chen Xiang (Black Aquilaria Agallocha Wood) (each 5 qian).
Grind into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills each time, with Deng Xin (Junci Medulla) and Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) decoction.
Jing Yao states: People who are resentful, depressed, and have unfulfilled desires often suffer from this disease.
San Yin Lun states: Ju (deep-seated abscesses) and Luoli (scrofula), regardless of deficiency/excess or cold/heat, are all formed by Qi stagnation. The classics state: Qi lodges in the meridians, stagnates with blood, obstructs and knots to form Yong Ju (carbuncles and abscesses). It does not say that heat causes the formation of sores, but rather that it is due to anger, joy, worry, and thought causing stagnation.
Dusheng San (Single Victory Powder): Treats Yong Ju (carbuncles and abscesses) caused by blood stasis and Qi condensation.
Xiang Fu Zi (Cyperi Rhizoma, hairs removed cleanly, soaked in Sheng Jiang Jiang (Ginger Juice) overnight, dried, ground extremely fine).
Take 2 qian mixed with plain hot water at any time. It is also said: Ju diseases are often caused by anger. If one has this disease, there must be much anger. Just taking Xiang Fu promotes digestion and moves Qi, which will naturally be effective.
Danxi said: Dusheng San treats Qi stagnation and blood stasis. After the healing of various sores, taking it regularly for half a year is especially wonderful. This applies to people with solid constitution and Qi stagnation. I saw Brother Wu, who consumed rich foods and had Qi stagnation, with a solid body and heavy temperament, nearly sixty years old, suffering from a back carbuncle. Other medicines prescribed by doctors were ineffective, only drinking Xiang Fu powder brought quick relief. He relied solely on this single herb throughout, and the swelling and ulceration were stabilized by it. However, such cases of solid constitution and solid disease occur only once in thousands. I often think that although the classics do not mention Xiang Fu having tonifying properties, the formula Bu Lao Tang (Ageless Decoction) claims benefit for the elderly, using Pianzi Jiang Huang (Curcuma Longa Rhizoma slice), Xiang Fu Zi, and Gan Cao, named "Ageless," and cites Mr. Tie Weng and Jun Liu as evidence. There must be a reason! It lies in the fact that moving Qi contains the principle of tonification. Heaven is Heaven because it is vigorous and constant; because it does not cease, life generates endlessly. Similarly, Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus) invigorates blood and moves Qi, having the subtle effect of tonifying Yin, hence the name Yi Mu (Beneficial Mother). What is relied upon before and after childbirth is Qi and Blood. Before pregnancy, there is no stagnation; after childbirth, there is no deficiency, because movement contains tonification. Xia Ku Cao (Prunellae Spica) treating Luoli (scrofula) is the same.
Yuanzhi Jiu (Polygalae Wine): Treats all Yong Ju (carbuncles and abscesses) and Back Carbuncles, boils and toxic sores, infiltrating dead blood. If Yin toxin is inside, there is no pain; applying it causes pain. If憂怒 (worry and anger) accumulate and attack inward, pain is unbearable; applying it stops pain. If heat accumulates inside, making hands unable to approach, applying it brings coolness. If Qi is deficient and Blood is cold, ulcerating but not healing, if caused by internal depression of Seven Emotions, treatment will surely cure.
Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix) (amount unspecified, soaked in rice washing water, pounded to remove heart, dried, ground to powder).
Use one zhan of wine, mix with 3 qian of powder, let settle, and drink the clear liquid. Apply the dregs to the affected area.
Yueju Wan (Resolving Depression Pill): Treats Six Depressions, toothache, mouth and tongue ulcers, chest and diaphragm fullness, vomiting and acid regurgitation, abdominal distension and leg soreness, etc.
Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Shen Qu (Massae Fermentatae Medicinalis, stir-fried), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried), Fu Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, stir-fried) (equal parts).
Grind into powder, mix with water and Qu flour to make pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 70 pills each time, with plain hot water.
Wuxiang San (Five Fragrances Powder): Ascends and descends various Qis, ventilates and benefits the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), unblocks stagnation, disperses evil heat. Treats Yin and Yang Qi, knotted and unresolved, various heats accumulating into toxins, painful swelling and nodules, or resembling carbuncles/boils but not quite, causing headache, nausea, aversion to cold and fever, and rapid breathing.
Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Ru Xiang (Olibanum), Lei Xiang (Agastaches Herba) (equal parts).
Chop into pieces. Take 3 qian each time, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water, take warm after meals.
Bu Yi states: The treatment for male and female Yong Ju (carbuncles and abscesses) is no different, except for three conditions: amenorrhea, Blood deficiency, and Qi knot. I believe: Women's menstruation flows when full, so amenorrhea is indeed different. However, women's temperaments are ten times more stubborn than men's. Even if there is deficiency requiring tonification, one must consider their stubbornness. I once saw Lady Lou, widowed early, fond of drinking and eating, fat and tall, with a dark and toxic temperament, aged sixty. In June or July, she developed a back carbuncle near the spine. The doctor cut horizontally and vertically to drain blood, mixed with Wuxiang San (Five Fragrances Powder) and Shixuan San (Ten Acupoints Powder), given with wine for over a month. No one discussed her widowhood-related depression, the toxicity of alcohol and meat, the stagnation of stubbornness, or the seasonal heat. Ultimately, the carbuncle flattened and sank, lingering for two or three months without rescue.
Rendong Jiu (Lonicera Vine Wine): Should be taken at the initial onset. Whether in poverty, living in remote villages, farmers or old villagers, it works perfectly every time.
Rendong Teng (Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis) (freshly taken, a handful, leaves ground in a mortar with a little wine, mixed well, applied around the perimeter leaving the center open; another 5 liang pounded with a wooden hammer, avoiding iron vessels), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, raw chopped, 1 liang).
Put the above two ingredients in a clay pot. Use 2 bowls of water, decoct with mild heat to 1 bowl, add 1 large bowl of good wine, boil for ten+ boils, remove dregs. Divide into three doses, finish within one day and night; for severe heat, two doses can be taken in one day and night. (Rendong Teng tonifies Blood; not suitable for Qi deficiency and excessive cold. Thus, farmers and old villagers find it perfectly effective.)
Jinyinhua Tang (Honeysuckle Decoction): Treats all Yong Ju (carbuncles and abscesses), Back Carbuncles, Ding Chuang (hard carbuncles), Hou Bi (throat closure), Ru E (tonsillitis/mumps).
Jinyinhua Tengye (Lonicera Japonica Vine and Leaves), pounded, extract half a cup of juice, mix with half a cup of hot wine, take warm. For severe cases, no more than 3-5 doses ensure safety.
Huaihua Jiu (Sophora Flower Wine): Treats Back Carbuncles and all sores/toxins, whether formed or not, if painful, treat both.
Use 4-5 liang of Huaihua (Sophorae Flos), lightly stir-fry until yellow, add 2 cups of wine while hot, boil for ten+ boils, remove dregs, take hot. For unformed sores, 2-3 doses; for formed sores, 1-2 doses.
Huang Qi Tang (Astragalus Decoction): Treats various sores, dispels wind-heat.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, chopped), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, remove black heart), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, remove heart, dried), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, chopped, each 1.5 liang), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 4 liang), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, ginger-processed, 0.5 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, sliced, dried), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chopped, stir-fried), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (each 1 liang).
Chop like hemp beans. Take 5 qian bi each time, use 1.5 zhan of water, 7 slices of Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), decoct to 1 zhan, remove dregs. Take warm on an empty stomach, take again in the evening.
Sheng Di Huang San (Rehmannia Powder): Treats developing Yong Zhong (abscess swellings), Heat-Toxin pain, mental restlessness.
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens, 2 liang), Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chopped, stir-fried), Chuan Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, chopped, lightly stir-fried), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, raw, each 1 liang), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with red skin, 1.5 liang).
Grind into powder. Take 4 qian each time, use 1 zhong of water, add 14 slices of Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), decoct to 6 fen, remove dregs. Take warm at any time.

Ming E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla, stir-fried until bubbling like pearls), Fen Cao (Licorice Root) (each 1 liang), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, 0.5 liang).
Chop, divide into three doses, use 1 zhan of water, decoct to 7 fen, remove dregs, take warm.
Niu Jiao Yin (Ovine/Cow Gelatin Drink): Stops Yong Ju (carbuncles and abscesses), malignant sores, and dangerous eruptions, preventing toxic vapors from attacking inward.
Niu Jiao (Cow Gelatin, transparent quality, 4 liang).
Use 1 bowl of wine, add gelatin, melt in double boiler, stir well, pour out, soak again in wine. Drink as desired, up to intoxication for those who can. This formula saves many lives.
Huang Fan Wan (Yellow Alum Pill): Taking over 1 liang yields results invariably. Best for stopping pain, does not damage Zang-Fu organs, saving countless lives.
Bai Fan (Alumen, 1 liang), Huang La (Yellow Beeswax, 0.5 liang).
Mix and make pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 10 pills each time, gradually increasing to 50 pills, with warm wine. If unbroken, it dissipates; if broken, it heals. Taking 100 pills a day is effective. Prevents toxic vapors from attacking inward, protects membranes, total course requires half a jin. Especially good to take after wound healing. For snake bites, melt Bai Fan, apply hot to the wound, pain stops immediately.
Another Formula: Use refined Bai Fan (Alumen), grind fine, take 2 egg whites, mix alum powder to paste consistency. Take with unadulterated aged wine. Unformed pus dissipates immediately; formed pus exits via urine and feces. Divine efficacy, surpassing Huang Fan Wan greatly.
Danxi said: E Jiao Yin (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Drink), Niu Jiao Yin (Gelatin Drink), and Huang Fan Wan (Yellow Alum Pill). Cow hide belongs to Metal/Earth, tonifies Lung Qi, strengthens Large Intestine, strengthens Stomach, stops diarrhea. Huang Fan Wan, beeswax is sweet and bland, enters Large Intestine, has difficult-to-digest tonifying properties. Guolao Gao uses Gan Cao to transform toxins and move meridians. Yuanzhi Jiu (Polygalae Wine) and Rendong Jiu (Lonicera Wine) both have tonifying properties, enter Heart and Blood, used appropriately. Skilled users combine them with Sanjie (dissipating nodules) formulas for swelling sores and Buxu (tonifying deficiency) formulas for ulcerated sores, achieving swift success.
Tuoli Xiaodu San (Support Interior and Disperse Toxin Powder): Treats weak Stomach Qi, or damage from purging, inability to ulcerate and disperse. Taking it causes unformed sores to dissipate and formed sores to ulcerate, foul flesh falls off naturally, new flesh grows naturally. If foul flesh has ulcerated but new flesh cannot converge due to Qi deficiency, Sizijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) is primary; if due to Blood deficiency, Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) is primary; if both Qi and Blood are deficient, Shiquan Dabu Tang (Perfect Golden Tonification Decoction) is primary. Avoid cold-cooling detoxifying agents.

If caused by Six Evils, Seven Emotions, or mixed pathogens of various meridians, examine the cause and refer to the governing formula. If due to weak Stomach Qi, Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) is primary.

All the above formulas use Huang Qi (Astragalus) as Sovereign, Gan Cao (Licorice) and Dang Gui/Ren Shen (Angelica/Ginseng) as Assistants, thereby solidifying the interior and tonifying deficiency while supporting the interior.
Danxi's methods for solidifying interior and tonifying deficiency all use Ren/Shu (Ginseng/Atractylodes) and Gui/Qi (Angelica/Astragalus), and in severe cases, Duchen Gao (Single Ginseng Paste). These methods are seen in the Meridian Classification section later, scattered in Ulcer Section, Deficiency/Excess Cold/Heat sections, truly a swift method turning death to life.
Yuan Rong: Example of Cold Yong Ju (Carbuncles/Abscesses) in Su Wen (Basic Questions). The classics state: Kidney transmits cold to Spleen, causing swelling and shortness of breath. Spleen transmits cold to Liver, causing swelling and spasms. Also: All cold-induced swellings arise from changes of the Eight Winds. Also: Earth's dampness affects people, harming skin, flesh, sinews, and vessels. Sheng Ji states: Clothes too thick, exterior easily catches cold. The source of acquisition is generally like this. Or eruption without color change, or hard as stone, or painless when pressed. Later changes color and becomes painful, gradually softens into pus, thin like rice water, long-term non-healing, wound edges do not close, transforms into Gan Lou (fistula with tissue decay), destroys muscle, invades bone marrow, leading to atrophy and numbness. Treat primarily with Gusuibu Wan (Drynaria Pill). (Formula seen in Chronic Fistula Sores.)
Li Shiyeng suffered from a Ju (abscess) for several days, base spread wide, sometimes abdominal pain and diarrhea, hands and feet always cold, pulse deep, faint, and fine, or spontaneous sweating. Urgently use Jiang Fu (Ginger and Aconite) medicines. In severe cases, moxa 300-500 moxa cones on Guan Yuan (CV4) below the navel. Wait until hands and feet are warm, diarrhea stops, appetite returns, then one can rejoice.
