Ophiopogon (as the Sovereign herb)
Taste is sweet, nature is neutral, slightly cold, non-toxic. It primarily treats qi stagnation in the heart and abdomen, internal injury to the middle jiao or overeating, emaciation and shortness of breath caused by the severance of stomach collaterals, heaviness of the body, yellow eyes, fullness and distension below the heart, exogenous heat from deficiency consumption, dry mouth and thirst. It stops vomiting, cures flaccidity syndromes (limb weakness), strengthens yin and benefits essence, promotes digestion and harmonizes the middle jiao, calms the spirit, stabilizes lung qi, soothes the five zang organs, makes one robust and healthy, improves complexion, and aids fertility. Long-term use lightens the body, prevents aging and hunger. In Qin it is called Yangjiu (Sheep Leek), in Qi Aijiou (Beloved Leek), in Chu Majiu (Horse Leek), in Yue Yangshu (Sheep Yushu), also known as Yuja, also known as Yuyuliang. Leaves resemble leeks, evergreen in winter and summer. Grows in the valleys of Hangu and on abandoned, fertile earth and stone banks along dikes. Harvested in February, March, August, and October, dried in the shade. (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata and Plantaginis Semen are its assistants; incompatible with Kuan Dong Hua and Ku Hu; opposed to Ku Shen and Qing Xiang.)
Tao Hongjing stated: Hangu refers to the Qin Pass. However, Maidong differs in name from Yangjiu. It grows everywhere, harvested in April; fruits appear like green pearls in winter, roots resemble wheat grains, hence the name Maidong. Those that are plump and large are preferred. When used, boil and remove the core, otherwise it causes irritability; it is essential for those practicing grain avoidance. Both Men Dong (Asparagus root) and Maidong are valued when moist, but become lighter when dry, losing only four or five liang per jin. Currently examining Chen Cangqi's Bencao: The Classic of Materia Medica does not mention raw Maidong. According to raw usage, besides original functions, removing the core and boiling for drinking stops irritability, heat, and thirst, body heaviness, yellow eyes, chills and fever, body fatigue, stops vomiting, opens appetite, and resolves phlegm-fluids. Dried Maidong is used in pills, powders, and decoctions, with efficacy as described in the Classic of Materia Medica; physicians have their own distinctions. Produced in Jiangning as Xiao Run, in Xin'an as Da Bai. Large ones have seedlings resembling Lulucong, small ones resemble leek leaves. There are three or four sizes, with similar functions; their seeds are round and dark green. Long-term use lightens the body and brightens eyes. Combined with Che Qian Zi and Sheng Di Huang into pills, taken after meals, it removes warm miasma, brightens eyes, and allows seeing light at night. Minister Yuxi et al. carefully noted Wu Shi said: Also named Majiu, also named (sound 'men') Huodong, also named Rendong, also named Renling, also named Busiyao, also named Pulei, also named Suizhi. Shennong and Qibo: Sweet, neutral. Huangdi, Tongjun, Leigong: Sweet, non-toxic. Ji Shi: Sweet, slightly warm. Bianque: Non-toxic. Grows in fertile places of mountains and valleys, leaves resemble leeks, plump and glossy, growing in clumps, harvest time unspecified, fruits greenish-yellow. Yao Xing Lun states: Maidong, assistant herb, opposes Ku Shen, fears Mu Er. Treats qi stagnation, blackened skin and yellow eyes, bitter fullness and distension below the heart, exogenous heat from deficiency consumption. Ri Hua Zi stated: Treats five labors and seven injuries, calms soul and魄, stops thirst, makes one fat, treats epidemic febrile diseases with mania, headache, stops coughing.
Tu Jing stated: Maidong grows in the valleys of Hangu and on abandoned, fertile earth and stone banks along dikes; now found everywhere. Leaves are green like Cyperus rotundus, over a chi long, never withering in seasons. Roots are yellow-white, with fibrous roots forming beads, resembling wheat grains, hence the name Maidong. Opens pale red flowers in April, like Polygonum orientale flowers. Fruits are dark green and round like pearls. Those from Jiangnan, large leaves have seedlings like Lulucong, small like leeks, three or four sizes, similar functions, some say those from Wu region are superior. Harvested in February, March, August, and October, dried in the shade. Can also be decocted alone. Take fresh roots, remove core, pound thoroughly, squeeze juice, mix with white honey, boil repeatedly in a silver vessel over water, stirring constantly until it resembles malt syrup. Dissolve in wine and take warm; treats middle jiao and benefits heart, beautifies complexion, calms spirit, tonifies qi, makes one robust, its power is very rapid. Also treats toxicity from mineral drugs. Maidong (core removed) 6 liang, Renshen 4 liang, Gancao 2 liang (roasted), sift the three substances, make honey pills like wu zi size, take twice daily with water. Cui Yuanliang's Haishang Fang for treating Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) pills says: Accidentally obtained from a villager, miraculous effect unspeakable. Use two large liang of fresh, plump Maidong from Shangyuan Banqiao, two large liang of Jiujie Huanglian from Xuanzhou, remove three to five nodes from both ends. Clean with a small knife, remove peel and hairs, blow off dust, rub with raw cloth, weigh, pound into powder. Soak Maidong in juice of large Ku Hu overnight, then remove core, pound in mortar, add Huanglian powder, pound together, form pills like wu zi size, take fifty pills after meals with water, twice daily. Only two days of服用 will surely cure thirst. For severe cases, first dose 150 pills, second day 129 pills, third day 100 pills, fourth day 80 pills, fifth day return to original dosage. If preparing medicine, check for clear weather, soak medicine that night. Must be in a clean place, forbid women, chickens, and dogs from seeing or knowing. If feeling suitable, take only 25 pills daily. After finishing, if feeling deficient, take one sheep head, clean fur and wash, boil in three dou of water until soft, remove head, take about one dou of juice, drink slowly, no salt added, recover within three doses.
Yanyi stated: Maidong is the fruit on the root. Treats deficiency-heat of heart and lungs, and exogenous heat from deficiency consumption. One can also take the seedlings to make hot water for drinking.
