Rheumatism (Fengshi) is caused by the simultaneous invasion of Wind pathogen (Feng) and Dampness pathogen (Shi). Wind refers to the empty winds from the eight directions; Dampness refers to the vapor generated by water moisture. If the ground is damp and there is a lack of frost or snow, the misty air from mountains and rivers steams upward. Combined with warm weather, this causes the Cou Li (skin texture and pores) to open, allowing the person to be affected by Wind-Dampness. The condition manifests as lethargy and mental confusion. If it persists for a long time, it can also cause the limbs to become flaccid and unresponsive. If the pathogen enters the Zang organs, it leads to aphonia and inability to control the mouth and tongue; or it may cause numbness and weakness in the feet, evolving into Hongxiangjiao (Gouty Arthritis / Foot Qi). Regarding treatments such as decoctions, hot compresses, acupuncture, and stone therapy, there are separate specific formulas. Methods for nourishment, supplementation, and Daoyin (guiding and pulling exercises) are attached below.
The *Yangsheng Fang · Zhen Gao* states: When combing hair, one should comb many times to promote blood circulation and disperse Wind-Dampness. Frequently change combs and use them alternately.
Bi syndrome (Bi Zheng) is formed when Wind, Cold, and Dampness pathogens mix and invade the body together. Its manifestations include muscle numbness and heaviness, or pain. This occurs because the human body is deficient, causing the Cou Li to open, thus allowing Wind pathogen to invade. Disease in the Yang aspect is called Feng (Wind); disease in the Yin aspect is called Bi (Obstruction); disease affecting both Yin and Yang is called Fengbi (Wind-Bi). If Bi is contracted in Spring, it is called Jinbi (Sinew Bi), resulting in sinew contraction and flexion. If Jinbi is not cured and the person encounters evil again, the pathogen shifts to enter the Liver. Its symptoms include startle during sleep at night, excessive drinking, and frequent urination. If Bi is contracted in Summer, it is called Maibi (Vessel Bi), causing blood coagulation and stagnation, leading to sallow complexion. If Maibi is not cured and the person encounters evil again, the pathogen shifts to enter the Heart. Its symptoms include palpitations like drumming under the heart, sudden upward reversal of Qi, panting and difficulty breathing, dry throat, and frequent belching. If Bi is contracted in Late Summer, it is called Jibi (Muscle Bi), where the flesh becomes insensible. If Jibi is not cured and the person encounters evil again, the pathogen shifts to enter the Spleen. Its symptoms include limb lethargy, coughing, and vomiting of saliva. If Bi is contracted in Autumn, it is called Pibi (Skin Bi), where the skin loses sensation. If Pibi is not cured and the person encounters evil again, the pathogen shifts to enter the Lung. Its symptoms include rushing Qi and pain. If Bi is contracted in Winter, it is called Gubi (Bone Bi), where the bones feel heavy and cannot be lifted, accompanied by immobility and pain. If Gubi is not cured and the person encounters evil again, the pathogen shifts to enter the Kidney. Its symptoms include a tendency toward abdominal distension.
Diagnosing the pulse: A large and choppy pulse indicates Bi syndrome; a rapid pulse also indicates Bi syndrome. Regarding treatments such as decoctions, hot compresses, acupuncture, and stone therapy, there are separate specific formulas. Methods for nourishment, supplementation, and Daoyin are attached below.
The *Yangsheng Fang* states: Entering water while sweating leads to Bone Bi.
It also states: Holding urine without urinating, combined with cold knees, results in Bi syndrome.
It also states: Do not expose one side of the body by partially removing clothes when sweating profusely; otherwise, one may suffer from unilateral wind, leading to hemiplegia.
The *Yangsheng Jing Yao Ji* states: Applying powder immediately after profuse sweating and wearing sweat-soaked clothes can cause sores and difficulty in urination and defecation.
The *Yangsheng Fang · Daoyin Fa* states: First, hook the big toe of the left foot with the right heel to dispel Wind-Bi; second, hook the big toe of the right foot with the left heel to dispel Jue-Bi; third, alternate pulling the dorsum of the feet with both hands and place them on the knees to dispel Body-Bi.
It also states: Lie supine, bring the two knee caps together, turn the feet outward, extend the waist, inhale through the mouth until the abdomen is fully distended, repeating for seven breaths. This dispels Bi pain, heat pain, and immobility of the lower legs.
It also states: Sit squatting, extend the waist, pull the two heels with both hands, inhale through the nose until reaching the limit, repeating for seven breaths, then spread the hands to the sides of the knees. This dispels Bi-induced vomiting.
It also states: Lie supine, straighten and extend the arms and legs, inhale through the nose until reaching the limit, repeating for seven breaths, then shake the feet thirty times before stopping. This dispels cold in the chest and feet, generalized Bi, and Jue-Ni (reversal cold).
It also states: Stand upright leaning against a wall, hold the breath and circulate Qi from head to foot. This cures severe Wind, Pianku (hemiplegia), and various Bis.
It also states: Support the ground with both hands, arch the back to stretch the waist for five breaths before stopping. This removes Wei-Bi (flaccidity Bi) and benefits the nine orifices.
It also states: Point the toes of both feet upward, holding for five breaths before stopping. This stretches Bi of the waist and back, Pianku; it enhances hearing. Long-term practice ensures no obstruction in the roots of the eyes and ears.
It also states: Sit squatting, extend the right leg, hug the left knee with both hands, extend the waist, inhale through the nose until reaching the limit, repeating for seven breaths, then extend the right foot outward. This dispels difficulty in bending and extending, rising from bowing, and pain in the shins due to Bi.
It also states: Arch the arms left and right, hold the breath and circulate Qi nine times. This treats pain in the arms and legs, fatigue, and immobility due to Wind-Bi.
It also states: When one commonly feels stiffness and stuffiness in the back, regardless of the season, retract the throat and shoulders inward, look up and strain the Jingwell point of the shoulder, and twist the head left and right. Perform twenty-one repetitions on each side, pausing once, waiting for the blood flow and Qi movement to settle before continuing. Start slowly and increase speed later; do not start fast and slow down. Even if healthy, it is beneficial to practice at these three times: morning, noon, and sunset, doing fourteen repetitions per session. This dispels chills and fever, pain in the spine, waist, neck, and nape, Wind-Bi, oral ulcers, wind affecting the teeth, and dizziness.
