Shaoyang disease (Cold Damage) refers to cold pathogenic factors invading the skin and contending with blood and qi, causing the couli (skin pores and tissue spaces) to become closed and dense. This prevents the venting and discharge of qi, leading to accumulation and generation of heat. Consequently, symptoms such as headache, body pain, and high fever occur. If there is obstruction of both urination and defecation, it is because cold contends with qi generating heat, which then flows into the large and small intestines, causing dryness, stagnation, and blockage. Whenever urination and defecation are obstructed, internal heat does not subside; this may manifest as dry retching or incoherent speech. If qi rebels and moves upward, it results in distension and fullness of the heart and abdomen.

This prevents the venting and discharge of qi, leading to accumulation and generation of heat. Consequently, symptoms such as headache, body pain, and high fever occur. If abdominal distension is present, it is because heat has entered the abdomen and transmitted to the zang organs. The qi of the zang organs becomes knotted and aggregated, thus causing abdominal distension. If accompanied by toxic pathogens, symptoms include abdominal distension and vexation.

This prevents the venting and discharge of qi, leading to accumulation and generation of heat. Consequently, symptoms such as headache, body pain, and high fever occur. If sore throat is present, it is because heat is excessive in the chest and heart, causing qi to rush upward to the throat, thus inducing pain. If accompanied by toxic pathogens, the throat becomes painful with swelling and knotting, preventing the intake of water and food. If the toxin re-enters the heart and causes severe vexation, the prognosis is fatal.

This prevents the venting and discharge of qi, leading to accumulation and generation of heat. Consequently, symptoms such as headache, body pain, and high fever occur. Cough indicates that the pathogenic factor is in the Lung. The Lung governs the skin and hair and controls qi. The Shaoyang pathogen first invades the skin and follows the qi into the Lung, thus causing cough. In severe cases, pus and blood may be expectorated.
Shaoyang disease (Cold Damage) refers to cold pathogenic factors invading the skin and contending with blood and qi, causing the couli to become closed and dense. This prevents the venting and discharge of qi, leading to accumulation and generation of heat. Consequently, symptoms such as headache, high fever, and body pain occur. Cough persisting after recovery indicates that the pathogenic factor remains lodged in the Lung and has not been fully cleared. Cold pathogens injure the body by first invading the skin and hair. The skin and hair are the external manifestations of the Lung, which controls qi. Cold contends with Lung qi and enters the five zang and six fu organs, resulting in heat in both the exterior and interior. After the heat subsides, the Lung has not yet harmonized, and the pathogen remains. The pathogen follows the qi into the Lung and contends with Lung qi, thus causing persistent cough after Shaoyang disease.
