然而入脏、在腑虽有不同,而作寒、作热则无不同也。寒在脏,则阴与阳战而发热;
In spring, contracting wind pathogen results in headache, nasal congestion, and body fever. This indicates the wind pathogen is about to enter the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel, rather than being Cold Damage (Shanghan) of the Taiyang channel. Wind contracted in spring enters through the skin and hair into the Lung. If wind enters the Lung and fails to disperse, the nose becomes obstructed. The Qi of Metal (Lung) cannot be elevated, losing its clear and descending function, and inevitably transfers the pathogen to the Taiyang Bladder channel. Fearing the pathogen's entry, the pores are tightly closed, causing the water passages to malfunction. Consequently, water fails to descend while fire flares upward, leading to headache. This is completely different from Cold Damage transmitted to the Taiyang channel. Dispersing the wind in the Lung Metal and blocking its path to the Bladder will naturally resolve the body fever. Use Shufei Tang (Lung-Relaxing Decoction): Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 3 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Zuye (Perilla Leaf, 0.5 fen), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root, 1 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 0.3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, body heat resolves; after two doses, headache and nasal congestion are completely cured.
This formula specifically enters the Lung Metal to disperse wind pathogen. Where there is wind, phlegm must generate; where there is phlegm, fire must exist. Tianhuafen eliminates phlegm and effectively clears fire, serving a dual purpose with a single herb; Guizhi and Fuling open the gate of the Bladder, guiding the pathogen directly to the Bladder for downward excretion. By following the Lung's tendency to transfer the pathogen, the momentum is convenient, utilizing it according to its mechanism.
For this syndrome, Jiawei Ganjie Tang (Modified Sweet Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) is also excellent.
Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (each 3 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (each 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in two doses.
In spring, contracting wind pathogen causes body fever, cough, expectoration of phlegm, aversion to heat, and thirst. This indicates that wind damage has caused Mingyang (Yangming) stomach fire to restrain Lung Metal, not Cold Damage transmitted to the Yangming channel. Yangming Stomach Earth normally generates Lung Metal; why does the generator come to restrain the generated? The Lung is a delicate organ. When wind enters the Lung channel, it necessarily transforms into cold. The Stomach, as the mother of Lung Metal, seeing its child affected by cold, uses heat to assist it. The Stomach itself has no heat; Heart Fire, the mother of the Stomach, knowing the Stomach wishes to generate Metal, sends out its fire to help. However, assisting the excess of Stomach Earth inevitably overcomes the deficiency of Lung Metal. This is like borrowing troops to punish thieves, but instead causing the guest troops to harm the people. Thus, the Stomach becomes hot and the Lung becomes hot, generating symptoms of cough and thirst. The treatment method should purge Heart Fire to pacify Stomach Earth, allowing Lung Qi to be nourished so that wind pathogen disperses naturally. Use Pingxie Tang (Pathogen-Pacifying Decoction): Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, 0.3 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Sugeng (Perilla Stem, 1 qian), Ziwan (Aster Root, 1 qian), Gegen (Kudzu Root, 1 qian), Shigao (Gypsum, 3 qian), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 5 qian), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb, 3 qian), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Symptoms lighten after one dose, lighter after two, and body cools after three; no need for a fourth dose.
This formula purges Heart Fire by three-tenths and Stomach Fire by six-tenths. The restraint of Lung by excessive Heart Fire is light, while the punishment of Metal by excessive Stomach Fire is heavy. Lightly purging Heart Fire prevents the Heart from assisting the Stomach in punishing Metal; heavily purging Stomach Fire prevents the Stomach from punishing Metal and injuring the Lung. Once Lung Qi recovers, how can Lung pathogen remain?
For this syndrome, Qingwei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder) is also effective.
Shigao (Gypsum), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (each 2 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 0.3 fen), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 3 qian), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Gegen (Kudzu Root) (each 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in one dose.
In spring, contracting wind pathogen causes chills and fever, bitter taste in the mouth, distension and fullness in the hypochondrium, or acid regurgitation. This is Spring-Warmth of the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel. Why is winter called Cold Damage and spring called Spring-Warmth? Winter wind-cold is deep injury; spring wind-warmth is shallow injury. Deep injury to Shaoyang brings fear of entering the interior; shallow injury to Shaoyang brings joy of exiting the exterior. Thus, although both injure Shaoyang, wind damage and cold damage are truly different. Regarding treating Shaoyang wind damage, the method need not differ greatly; simply soothe the pathogen in the half-exterior half-interior, and wind pathogen disperses naturally. Although Cold Damage entering Shaoyang has interior symptoms often treated with Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) or Chengqi class formulas for purgation, wind damage entering Shaoyang requires only Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) for harmonizing; there is no need to use Da Chaihu or Chengqi formulas heavily. Use Jiajian Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction): Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 1.5 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 1 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 0.5 fen), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Chills and fever resolve after one dose; all symptoms cure after another dose.
This formula is more miraculous than the original. Using large amounts of Fuling allows the pathogen to exit via the Bladder, surpassing simple harmonizing. Assisting Chaihu to disperse pathogen achieves remarkable merit.
For this syndrome, Andan Tang (Gallbladder-Calming Decoction) is also effective.
Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Chao Zhizi (Fried Gardenia Fruit) (each 2 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Baishao (White Peony Root), Danpi (Moutan Cortex) (each 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in two doses.
In spring, contracting wind pathogen causes body fever and incessant vomiting. People assume it is Taiyin (Taiyin Spleen) Cold Damage, but who knows it is Taiyin Spring-Warmth? Taiyin belongs to Spleen Earth. Wind injuring Taiyin means wind within Earth. Wind in the earth causes Earth to tremble and water to overflow, causing incessant vomiting. This is not comparable to Yin-Cold Qi entering Spleen Earth to induce vomiting. This differs entirely from Cold Damage transmitted to Taiyin. Cold Damage requires warming the channels to restore Yang, while wind damage requires dispersing wind to calm Earth. Use Dantu Tang (Earth-Stabilizing Decoction): Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 5 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Gancao (Licorice Root), Gegen (Kudzu Root) (each 1 qian), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven, 0.5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Wind disperses after one dose, body cools after two, and disease cures after three.
The formula removes pathogen within spleen-tonification; when Spleen is strong, wind subsides naturally.
For this syndrome, Hupi Yin (Spleen-Protecting Drink) is also usable.
Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 3 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 qian), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark, 0.3 fen), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 0.3 fen), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 qian), Zuye (Perilla Leaf, 0.5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in one dose.
In spring, contracting wind pathogen causes sweating, dry stomach, thirst, and desire to drink water. This is a Spring-Warmth syndrome, with Fire Pathogen entering the Bladder, not Taiyang Cold Damage. The Bladder is the exterior counterpart of Lung Metal. When Lung suffers wind pathogen, it eventually turns hot. Lung seeks rescue from the Bladder, and the pathogen takes advantage of this rescue to move downward. Bladder Water, wishing to save its mother, refuses to drain downward and instead fights wind-fire upward. Seeing the Bladder's righteous Qi is strong, the pathogen does not enter the Bladder but enters the Stomach. Stomach Heat fights the pathogen, causing sweating. Sweating dries Stomach fluids, causing thirst and desire for water to extinguish internal burning. Treatment need not disperse wind or purge flame; quickly promote Bladder diuresis so water exits via urine, then Stomach fluids regenerate naturally. Use Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria): Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 1 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome, 3 qian), Zhuling (Polyporus, 3 qian), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark, 0.1 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Urination promotes after one dose; thirst and sweating stop completely after two doses.
Wuling San exclusively promotes Bladder water. The Bladder is the Taiyang channel. Having sweated from wind damage, Taiyang pathogen should have exited, yet thirst persists, clearly indicating pathogen-heat refuses to exit via skin/hair and seeks to exit downward via the Bladder. Wuling San drains the Bladder; as water flows, fire flows. Fire leaves with water, Stomach fire消, Stomach generates fluids, which moisten the Lung. Lung nourished by Stomach fluids closes the skin/hair; how can pathogen re-enter?
For this syndrome, Zhibai Fuling Tang (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Poria Decoction) is also usable.
Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) (each 1 qian), Fuling (Poria, 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Thirst resolves after one dose, cured after two.
Wind damage causes headache and fever, slight night sweating, and aversion to wind. This is Spring-Warmth wind damage, not a Taiyang syndrome. Headache belongs to Taiyang, but wind can enter the brain causing headache; one cannot assume body fever and headache are Taiyang symptoms. Wind enters via skin/hair, which governs the Lung. Lung connects to the nose, and the nose connects to the brain. Wind entering the Lung draws wind into the brain causing headache. If Lung Qi is strong, pores are tight, and wind cannot enter. Due to Lung Qi deficiency, wind pathogen easily attacks. Pathogen and righteous Qi struggle, causing body fever. With deficient Lung Qi unable to resist, night sweat emerges slightly. This is clearly wind damage; do not treat lightly as cold damage. Where pathogen gathers, Qi is deficient. Tonify Lung Qi deficiency and release exterior wind pathogen; efficacy will be rapid. Use Yijin Sanfeng Tang (Metal-Nourishing Wind-Dispersing Decoction): Renshen (Ginseng Root, 0.5 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, 3 grains), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 3 qian), Zisu (Perilla Leaf, 1 qian), Manjingzi (Vittex Seed, 1 qian), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root, 1 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Headache removed after one dose, body heat resolved after another, night sweat stops after three.
This formula disperses more than it tonifies. Why named Metal-Nourishing? Lung channel injured by pathogen has very weak Qi. Heavy tonification would be hard to bear. Better to tonify slightly while dispersing exterior; pathogen exits outward while righteousness nourishes inward, benefiting both. Excessive dispersion is actually beneficial tonification.
For this syndrome, Tongnao San (Brain-Unblocking Powder) is also miraculous.
Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Fuling (Poria) (each 3 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 2 qian), Manjingzi (Vittex Seed), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) (each 0.5 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (each 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in two doses.
Wind damage causes headache, fever, body ache, heavy waist, sore joints, aversion to wind, and no sweat. People think it is Cold Damage, but it is not. Cold Damage does not cause aversion to wind. This is internal injury to Spleen and Kidney, with wind taking advantage of deficiency to enter the Lung. Meridians fail to circulate freely, causing body heat. Internal Spleen/Kidney injury seems unrelated to Lung, yet Lung invites external pathogen? Spleen is Lung's mother, Kidney is Lung's child. Mother deficiency leads to child deficiency, and vice versa. With Spleen/Kidney Qi deficient, Lung cannot be non-deficient. Pores are not tight, hair follicles unstable, so wind pathogen easily enters Lung channel. Lung Qi becomes more deficient, unable to moisten Kidney Palace below or irrigate limbs. Hence, whole-body joint soreness and heavy waist. But if Lung is deficient and pathogen enters easily, sweat should exit easily. Why no sweat upon pathogen entry? Pathogen exploits Lung deficiency and spies on Spleen/Kidney insufficiency, blocking pathogen at hair follicles. Hence, aversion to wind. External pathogen cannot re-enter, nor can internal sweat exit. Treatment: disperse Lung pathogen and tonify Spleen/Kidney Qi. When Spleen Earth is strong, Lung Qi has growth potential; when Kidney Water is sufficient, Lung Metal avoids dryness. Naturally, headache resolves upward to Brain, heaviness resolves downward to Bladder, and joint soreness heals centrally in Middle Jiao. Use Huangzi Dan (Yellow Purple Pill): Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 5 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 5 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome, 1 qian), Zisu (Perilla Leaf, 1 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Xixin (Asarum Root, 0.5 fen), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 1 qian), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 1 qian), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula tonifies more than it disperses. Why tonify Spleen only, not Kidney? Postnatal life relies on Spleen/Stomach Qi. Strong Spleen opens Stomach Qi; opened Stomach moistens Kidney Water. Besides, Renshen and Baizhu enter Kidney, and Baizhu specifically benefits waist/navel, benefiting whole-body Qi. Lung is child of Spleen/Stomach; mother strong makes child strong, capable of resisting pathogen. With Zisu, Huangqin, Qianghuo, Beimu to disperse wind, clear fire, eliminate phlegm, and drain water, these provide weapons for battle. Naturally, sweat exits, heat resolves, and pathogen escapes outward.
For this syndrome, Yiqi Sanfeng Tang (Qi-Replenishing Wind-Dispersing Decoction) is also very effective.
Renshen (Ginseng Root), Huangqi (Astragalus Root) (each 3 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (each 1 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 5 qian), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 2 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, 0.5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally.
In spring, contracting wind pathogen causes body fever for over ten days, heat knotting in the interior, alternating chills and fever. People think it is Taiyang Cold Damage with interior transformation, but Spring Wind Damage differs from Winter Cold Damage. Winter cold entering Taiyang eventually turns cold; Spring wind entering Taiyang eventually turns heat. Cold moves unpredictably, transmitting to organs; heat stays fixed, knotting in fu organs. Though organ/fu involvement differs, chills/fever generation is similar. Cold in organs causes Yin-Yang struggle resulting in fever; heat in fu organs causes Yang-Yin struggle resulting in chills. Alternating chills/fever depends on organ/fu strength/weakness. This syndrome is hardest to differentiate, distinguished by season. In winter, interior heat knot requires purgation; in spring, interior heat knot requires dispersion. Dispersing heat removes chills; removing chills stops heat. Use Sanjie Zhishen Tang (Knot-Dispersing Supreme Divine Decoction): Houpo (Magnolia Bark, 1 qian), Baishao (White Peony Root, 5 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 3 qian), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, 0.5 fen), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 1 qian), Chao Zhizi (Fried Gardenia Fruit, 3 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 0.3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Chills and fever remove after one dose, interior knots disperse.
Most herbs in the formula soothe Liver. It does not directly soothe Lung pathogen. When Lung Qi is attacked, Liver Wood bullies diseased Lung Metal and becomes hyperactive. Hyperactivity generates fire within Wood, assisting pathogen heat to punish Lung. If Liver is not purged and only Lung pathogen dispersed, Lung Qi becomes weaker, and heat cannot resolve quickly. Only by purging Liver fire does internal heat decline. Adding a few fen of Guizhi disperses Taiyang wind without aiding Jueyin fire. This is why heat knot resolves suddenly.
For this syndrome, Qingxie San (Pathogen-Clearing Powder) is also effective.
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 0.5 fen), Fuling (Poria, 5 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 0.5 fen), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) (each 1 qian), Sharen (Amomum Fruit, 1 grain). Decoct in water and take orally.
After eight or nine days of wind damage, wind-dampness combats, causing vexing body pain, inability to turn, no vomiting, no thirst. People think it is Cold Damage with wind-dampness in Taiyang channel, but who knows wind damage can also cause wind-dampness combat? Dampness is received from below, wind from above. Below, Bladder receives first; above, Lung channel receives first. Bladder receiving dampness needs wind to create waves; Lung channel receiving wind needs dampness to create mist. Wind damage causing wind-dampness combat occurs because lower body originally felt dampness and upper body offended by wind. They combine and combat in the body, causing vexing pain in four limbs. Vexing pain is a wind disease. Dampness causes heaviness. Pain severe enough to prevent turning indicates heaviness. This distinguishes simultaneous wind-damp disease accurately. Wind syndrome causes thirst; damp syndrome causes vomiting. Here, wind causes thirst quenched by water, damp wants to vomit stopped by wind. Hence, no vomiting and no thirst. Treatment: simultaneously resolve wind-damp pathogen. Use Shuangjie Fengshi Tang (Double-Resolving Wind-Damp Decoction): Fuling (Poria, 1 liang), Yiren (Coix Seed, 1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 2 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
Chaihu and Fangfeng dispel wind; Fuling and Yiren promote dampness drainage; Gancao harmonizes. Naturally, wind-damp double-resolved, all symptoms cured.
For this syndrome, Fengshi Liangshu Tang (Wind-Damp Double-Soothing Decoction) is also good.
Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (each 5 qian), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 1 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, 0.3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally.
In spring, contracting wind pathogen for eight or nine days resembles malaria: fever and chills, more heat less chills, no vomiting. People think it is malaria-like Cold Damage, but who knows Spring Wind Damage also has this syndrome? Wind pathogen between exterior/interior often causes chills/fever, not just Cold Damage. Wind damage is milder than Cold Damage; by day 8-9, pathogen should disperse. Why still malaria-like? No phlegm, no malaria; no food retention, no malaria. Without phlegm/food, wind pathogen cannot cause harm. Thus, wind damage resembling malaria implies phlegm/food retained in chest/diaphragm/stomach. After 8-9 days, righteous wind tries to leave, but phlegm/food retain it. More heat less chills proves internal injury heavy, external light mild. No vomiting indicates internal heat dries dampness; phlegm controlled by fire does not vomit. Extreme heat manifests external chills; aversion to cold is false cold. False cold true heat reveals malaria-like symptoms, resembling but not being malaria. Treatment: treat malaria-like, not true malaria. Use Poja Tang (Break-Fake Decoction): Renshen (Ginseng Root, 3 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 5 qian), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 1 qian), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven, 0.5 fen), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 2 qian), Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit, 10 berries), Gancao (Licorice Root, 0.5 fen), Baishao (White Peony Root, 5 qian), Biejia (Tartar Shell, 3 qian), Shigao (Gypsum, 1 qian), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Aversion to cold removes after one dose, fever resolves after two, malaria-like symptoms cure after four.
This formula contains pathogen-dispelling ingredients within righteousness-tonification. Righteousness undamaged, pathogen retreats. This is the way of combining King and Hegemon methods.
For this syndrome, Sanmie Tang (Malaria-Dispersing Decoction) is also effective.
Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, 2 qian), Heshouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (each 5 qian), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
In spring, contracting wind pathogen causes profuse sweating, slight fever, and aversion to wind. People think it is transmitted pathogen entering Yangming Stomach, but who knows Spring Warmth wind damage also has pathogen entering Stomach? Pathogen reaching Yangming必然 causes profuse sweating and thirst. Now, though sweating is profuse, there is no thirst. Fire pathogen is not yet vigorous, hence slight fever not high fever. Same external pathogen: why does Cold Damage pathogen entering Stomach cause fierce fire, while Wind Damage pathogen entering Stomach causes mild fire? Cold Damage pathogen is cold; Wind Damage pathogen is wind. Cold entering Stomach, Stomach dislikes cold and turns hot; wind entering Stomach, Stomach likes wind and turns warm. The heat is Stomach's self-heat, fanned by wind. Wind fans fire, fire leaks outward, remaining not in Stomach. Hence, skin extremely hot, profuse sweating, mouth not thirsty. Different from Cold Damage transmitted to Stomach, avoiding raging fire disaster. How to distinguish non-Cold Damage? Cold Damage aversion to cold not wind; Wind Damage aversion to wind not cold. One need not consider winter aversion to wind as definitive Cold Damage symptom. Aversion to wind is the disease of wind damage. Treatment: disperse wind, fire resolves naturally. Use Xunjie Tang (Smoking-Resolving Decoction): Shigao (Gypsum, 3 qian), Gange (Kudzu Root, 2 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike, 1 qian), Fuling (Poria, 5 qian), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 5 qian).
