A person suffering from malaria experiences lower back pain, headache, and heavy eyes at the onset. The cold sensation originates from the back, with chills preceding fever. During the febrile stage, the heat is intense like a blazing fire. After the fever subsides, sweat appears but does not dry immediately. There is soreness and pain in all joints of the body. Urine is scanty and dark red. Laypeople often call this "Spleen Cold," but it is actually malaria affecting the Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Taiyang Bladder Channel). Wind pathogens enter via the Taiyang meridian, becoming malaria pathogens. In winter, wind pathogens entering the Taiyang meridian cause Cold Damage (Shanghan); whereas in summer and autumn, wind pathogens entering the Taiyang meridian cause malaria. Generally, winter winds are extremely cold, while summer and autumn winds are extremely hot; different winds lead to different diseases. In summary, without food stagnation and phlegm-dampness, malaria cannot form. In summer and autumn, it is clearly hot wind causing trouble, enveloping phlegm and food so they fail to digest. When qi moves into the Yin aspect, it manifests as cold; when it moves into the Yang aspect, it manifests as heat. Phlegm and food usually stagnate when encountering cold and flow freely when encountering heat. Why do they remain enveloped and undigested? This is because the cold and heat pathogens are extremely fierce, and their victory depends on the strength or weakness of the Spleen and Stomach. When pathogens reach extreme abundance, Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) cannot resist them, leading to distress. Body fluids fail to nourish the body, causing joint soreness and pain. Since Zheng Qi cannot resist the pathogens, the pathogenic momentum increases, blocking the passes and junctions. Consequently, urine cannot be excreted promptly, and pathogenic fire enters, resulting in scanty, dark red urine. The treatment method should strengthen the Earth element of the Spleen and Stomach, disperse pathogens from the Taiyang meridian, eliminate phlegm, and resolve food stagnation. Once pathogens lose their support, they will dissipate naturally.
Prescription: Kai Xie San (Open Pathogens Powder)
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, 1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian), Zhu Ling (Polyporus, 2 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 qian), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Symptoms alleviate after one dose, further improve after two doses, and fully resolve after three doses.
This formula strengthens the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, allowing the Earth element to fight against pathogens. Within the process of strengthening the Spleen and Stomach, diuretic and damp-resolving herbs guide pathogens directly out through the Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Since pathogens entered via the Taiyang meridian, they exit via the same meridian, making dispersion easier within this channel. The formula not only disperses Taiyang pathogens but also addresses Shaoyang depression. Shaoyang serves as the exit route for Taiyang; cutting off this escape route forces pathogens to retreat along the original Taiyang path. Moreover, phlegm-resolving and food-digesting herbs are used appropriately, akin to a well-organized army where enemies flee upon seeing the flags.
For this condition, Jia Wei Si Jun Tang (Modified Four Gentlemen Decoction) is also highly effective.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, each 1 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria, each 5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 2 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
When a person suffers from malaria, the body first feels hot, accompanied by headache, dry nose, thirst with desire to drink, blurred vision, insomnia, irritability, aversion to light, and dislike of noisy voices. People mistake this for a Heat Disease, but it is actually malaria affecting the Yangming Stomach Meridian. Yangming belongs to Stomach Earth. When pathogens enter Yangming, their momentum grows strong. Yangming is a meridian abundant in Qi and Blood, capable of holding large amounts of food and fluids. One might think it can accommodate pathogens, yet pathogens cause trouble. The abundance of food and fluid Qi actually provides supplies for the "thieves" (pathogens). Like bandits in deep mountains who are not aggressive until they enter cities and plunder freely, Yangming pathogens behave similarly. If stomach contents are insufficient to satisfy hunger and thirst, the body seeks water to cool internal inflammation. Excessive drinking leads to water retention in the Heart and Stomach. Heart Qi is obstructed by water and cannot descend to communicate with the Kidney. With Heart and Kidney disconnected, sleep becomes impossible. If Heart Qi cannot descend to Kidney, Kidney fears the rising Fire and dares not ascend to nourish Heart fluids. This lack of nourishment causes irritability. Fire pathogens intensify; fearing fire and being injured by it, the patient prefers stillness over activity and dislikes noise. All these symptoms are caused by Yangming Heat pathogens. Treatment must urgently clear Yangming Heat. However, Fire pathogens in the Stomach consume body fluids, weakening Stomach Qi. Simply clearing pathogens without tonifying Zheng Qi leads to Zheng Qi exhaustion and unchecked pathogenic proliferation, preventing recovery. Therefore, one must tonify the Middle Jiao to clear Heat pathogens, protecting Zheng Qi while resolving pathogens.
Prescription: Ping Yang Tang (Level Yang Decoction)
Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 2 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 3 qian), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 5 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Symptoms alleviate after one dose, further improve after two doses, and fully resolve after four doses.
This formula uses Ren Shen and Bai Zhu to assist Spleen and Stomach Qi; Ge Gen and Shi Gao to clear Yangming Fire; Bei Mu and Ju Hong to resolve Yangming phlegm and food stagnation; Mai Dong to moisten Lung Heat; Chai Hu to soothe Gallbladder depression; and Fu Ling to drain Taiyang stagnation. It combines attack and tonification, mutually restraining effects, forcing pathogens to retreat.
For this condition, Fa Xie Tang (Expel Pathogens Decoction) is also effective.
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, each 3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, each 2 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, each 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
When malaria begins, patients experience alternating chills and fever, bitter taste in the mouth, deafness, chest and hypochondriac distension and pain, with or without vomiting. People assume it is a Hot Malaria, but it is actually malaria affecting the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Wind pathogens enter the body and hesitate to invade organs directly, instead hiding between the exterior and interior (Half-Exterior Half-Interior). They deepen their invasion when the body is weak, moving between exterior and interior, generating chills and fever. Advancing and contending with Yin causes chills; emerging and contending with Yang causes fever. The Half-Exterior Half-Interior region is the domain of Shaoyang. Malaria attacks always show chills and fever, which occur precisely in the Shaoyang position. Bitter taste indicates bile leakage; deafness indicates stagnant Gallbladder Qi; chest/hypochondriac pain indicates stagnant Gallbladder blood; vomiting or non-vomiting indicates Gallbladder pathogens carrying phlegm/food upward. Many methods treat malaria, but abandoning Shaoyang is incorrect. Treating Shaoyang malaria involves distinguishing Yin/Yang bias: Yin-bias causes more chills, Yang-bias causes more heat. Some cases have pure heat without chills, others pure cold without heat. Correcting biases requires harmonizing Shaoyang.
Prescription: He Miao Tang (Harmonize Malaria Decoction)
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus, 1 qian), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Symptoms alleviate after one dose, further improve after two doses, and fully resolve after three doses.
Every herb in this formula enters the Shaoyang meridians and Spleen/Stomach organs. It expels pathogens while supporting Zheng Qi, releases the exterior while securing the interior. It is a miraculous harmonizing agent, not just for malaria.
For this malaria, Shou Gong Tang (First Attack Decoction) is also effective.
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 2 qian), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma, 3 qian), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 0.5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, each 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
When malaria starts, patients shiver with cold, then develop fever. Complexion is pale, frequent sighing occurs. Severe cases appear near-death. Headache and thirst may occur. People think it is alternating cold-heat malaria, but it is actually malaria affecting the Jueyin Liver Meridian. Jueyin liver malaria enters via Shaoyang Gallbladder. If Liver Wood is robust, Shaoyang pathogens dare not penetrate deeply. Due to Liver deficiency, pathogens seize the opportunity to invade. Liver Qi is typically urgent; pathogen entry should cause hypochondriac fullness. Its absence indicates severe Liver deficiency. A robust Liver expresses anger; sighing without anger indicates extreme Liver weakness, unable to suppress pathogens. Near-death appearance results from rebellious Qi preventing speech. Rebellious Qi causes Fire to rise, failing to descend, creating throat heat and thirst. Treatment must urgently tonify the Liver to expel pathogens, avoiding harming the Liver.
Prescription: Bu Gan Qu Miao Tang (Tonify Liver Expel Malaria Decoction)
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, raw, 1 liang), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Symptoms alleviate after one dose, fully resolve after two doses.
This formula does not directly expel pathogens but purely tonifies Liver Qi. Robust Liver Qi prevents pathogen retention. Chai Hu guides pathogens out via Shaoyang, providing an exit route for easy resolution.
For this condition, Hu Gan Tang (Protect Liver Decoction) is also effective.
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, each 5 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 2 qian), He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, 3 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen, 3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1.5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
When malaria starts, chills precede fever, originating from the abdomen. Frequent vomiting occurs, subsiding after vomiting. Fever ends with sweating. People attribute this to external pathogens, but pathogens are excessive in the Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Spleen is Wet Earth, prone to phlegm production and difficult digestion. Combined with wind pathogens, malaria forms easily. All meridian malarias should consider the Spleen Earth. If Spleen itself is diseased, neglecting to tonify it is wrong. Spleen is Wet Earth; its nature is damp. Tonifying Spleen alone cannot quickly strengthen Earth or eliminate damp-phlegm/vomiting. One must simultaneously tonify Mingmen Fire. Warm Earth transforms damp-phlegm; wind pathogens lose support and cannot occupy the Spleen long-term. Thus, treating the Spleen is necessary, but treating only the Spleen is insufficient.
Prescription: Wen Pi Qu Miao Tang (Warm Spleen Expel Malaria Decoction)
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Qian Shi (Euryales Semen, 5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian), Pao Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum, 1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Bai Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 3 grains).
Decoct in water and take orally. Vomiting stops after one dose, chills/fever cease after two doses, fully resolves after three doses.
Malaria often stems from Spleen Cold; this formula is a holy medicine for Spleen Cold. For any Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold malaria, decocting and taking this yields miraculous results, regardless of whether it is daily or every-other-day malaria.
For this condition, Jia Wei Shu Ling Tang (Modified Shu-Ling Decoction) is also effective.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 3 qian), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 2 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 1 liang), Bai Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 3 grains).
Decoct in water and take orally.
When malaria starts, chills and fever are both intense. Lower back pain and stiff spine occur. Thirst is present. Cold starts from below: feet cold, then legs to navel, then hands to stop. Neck/head remain warm. People think it is Cold Malaria, but it is actually malaria affecting the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Early treatment is crucial, focusing on tonifying Yin. Without tonifying Yin, using only pathogen-expelling drugs turns it into a quartan-like pattern (every four days, twice). This malaria originates from internal Yin injury, with pathogens entering due to Yin deficiency. Initially, Yin is not severely deficient; combining Yin-tonics with pathogen-dispersers works instantly. Neglecting Zheng Qi tonification leads to deeper Yin deficiency and stronger pathogens. Although pathogens enter deeply due to Yin deficiency, tonifying Yin allows Yang to grow and pathogens to recede. If tonifying Yin works for deep pathogens, it surely works for early-stage pathogens.
Prescription: Tui Xie Tang (Retreat Pathogens Decoction)
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, raw, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen, 3 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 0.5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Symptoms alleviate after one dose, further improve after two doses, fully resolve after four doses.
This formula tonifies Kidney Yin. Why add Chai Hu and Ren Shen to soothe Shaoyang Qi and strengthen Spleen/Stomach Earth? Pathogens in the Kidney must be extracted to the Half-Exterior Half-Interior of Shaoyang for easier dispersion. Fearful that Chai Hu enters Extreme Yin and extracts to Extreme Yang without sufficient lifting power, Ren Shen is added to strengthen Spleen/Stomach. Vital Spleen Qi generates Yang to lift Yin. Bie Jia and He Shou Wu are Yin-penetrating pathogen-expellers. Pathogens facing such formidable generals in the Yin aspect dare not stay. Emerging to the Yang aspect, where Yang is not deficient, pathogens cannot survive. Attacking both Yin and Yang forces pathogens to flee.
For this condition, Si Miao San (Four Malaria Powder) is also effective.
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 2 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 1 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 5 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen, 3 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 0.3 qian), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica, stir-fried black, 1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Some suffer malaria twice every four days, lasting months/years. They have heat but no chills, sweat but no thirst, attacking at night. People think it is extreme Yin deficiency, but it is actually extreme Yang decline. Pathogens exploit Yin/Yang deficiency. Malaria initially enters Yang, then Yin. Entering Yang causes frequent attacks; entering Yin causes distant attacks; entering Extreme Yin causes even rarer attacks. Twice-every-four-days is the "intercalary day" malaria mentioned in Neijing, meaning pathogens entered Extreme Yin. It is hard to expel because declining Yang dares not fight pathogens, allowing them to settle in Extreme Yin. Zheng Qi and pathogens are incompatible; Zheng rejects pathogens, but pathogens bully Zheng. Pathogens in Extreme Yin are like bullies squatting in someone's home, ignoring the weak owner. Treatment must greatly tonify Yang, then add Yin-pathogen-expelling drugs. Pathogens emerge to clash with Yang, ensuring success. Mistaking this for Yin deficiency and using only Yin-tonics helps pathogens hide in Extreme Yin.
Prescription: Ti Yin Sheng Yang Qu Xie Tang (Lift Yin Raise Yang Expel Pathogens Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, raw, 1 liang), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 1 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, 5 qian), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 5 qian), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, chills/fever clash worsens temporarily; after another two doses, chills/fever cease, fully resolving.
Though tonifying both Yin and Yang, the focus is on Yang. Robust Yang fights pathogens. Initial worsening indicates Zheng Qi-Yang clashing with pathogens. Tonifying Yin supports Yin robustness, preventing pathogens from returning to Extreme Yin. Chai Hu lifts Yin to interact with Yang, bringing pathogens out. Upon meeting Yang, conflict ensues. Bie Jia and He Shou Wu are valiant; pathogens are defeated and flee. First battle may not win, but continuous battles ensure victory.
For this condition, Yuan Miao Tang (Distant Malaria Decoction) is excellent.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, each 1 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, each 2 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 0.5 qian), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Someone suffered excessive weeping, leading to post-illness malaria with extreme fatigue. People think it is unresolved Malaria Mother (mass), but it is actually dual deficiency of Yin and Yang. Malaria severity depends on Yin/Yang strength. Profuse discharge loses Blood (Yin). Sorrow injures Qi (Yang). Dual deficiency means extreme Zheng Qi weakness, unable to fight pathogens. Zheng Qi follows pathogen strength. Treatment must support Zheng Qi to expel pathogens. Only attacking pathogens without tonifying Zheng Qi leads to further Zheng Qi depletion, profuse sweating, Yin deficiency, and Yang scattering, risking death.
Prescription: Jiu Zheng Tang (Save Upright Qi Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Malaria stops after several doses, fully resolves after ten doses.
Long-standing pathogens persist due to abundant phlegm-Qi. Tonifying Zheng Qi eliminates phlegm-Qi. Robust Zheng Qi and diminished phlegm-Qi make recovery easier. This formula relies on Ban Xia’s efficacy; tonification is not rigid, elimination is not harsh.
For this condition, Jiu Ai Tang (Save Sorrow Decoction) is also effective.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 1 liang), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, each 5 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Someone had sudden malaria, foot cold from Mao hour (5-7 AM) to You hour (5-7 PM), heat starting then, resting at Yin hour (3-5 AM). Awake only one hour/day. People think wind pathogens entered Ying/Wei, but cold pathogens entered Yangming. Foot-Yangming and Chong Mai combine at Zong Jin and meet at Qi Jie. After intercourse, Qi in Yangming and Chong Mai is depleted, leaving emptiness. Cold pathogens invade this void between the two meridians. These meridians pass through calves and insteps. Pathogen combination depletes Yang in both meridians daily, failing to nourish collaterals, causing walking inability. Treatment must tonify deficiency in both meridians and disperse cold. Robust Yang repels cold; sweating resolves it. Instep distance makes drug delivery slow; higher doses are needed.
Prescription: Jie Han Tang (Resolve Cold Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 5 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 0.3 qian), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 2 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 0.5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Sweating after two doses cures.
Ren Shen and Bai Zhu greatly tonify Qi. Cang Zhu, Chuan Xiong, Chai Hu induce sweating. Fu Zi guides to Yangming, Chong Mai, Zong Jin, Qi Jie. Tonified Qi avoids blockage; dispersed pathogens avoid closure.
For this condition, Shen Zhu Fu Ban Tang (Ginseng-Atractylodes-Aconice-Pinellia Decoction) is also effective.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 2 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang).
Decoct in water and take orally. Fully resolves after two doses; no need for further doses.
Malaria occurring at Yin, Shen, Si, Hai hours is thought to be Phlegm Malaria, but is it Yin-within-Yang or Yang-within-Yin? Daytime attacks are Yin-within-Yang; nighttime attacks are Yang-within-Yin. Day attacks start at Si (9-11 AM) and end at Shen (3-5 PM); Si is Yang, Shen is Yin. Night attacks start at Hai (9-11 PM) and end at Yin (3-5 AM); Hai is Yin, Yin is Yang. Distinguish thus.
