The *Yizong Jinjian* (Medical Standard Golden Mirror) comments: The chapters 24 and 25 of the *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet) were originally listed at the end of the volume. The style of the text seems to be added by later authors. Commentators have either annotated or deleted parts of it. However, since it has been passed down for a long time, it is difficult to remove. Therefore, we still attach the original text here, listing it as a separate section for reference.
In general, the flavors of food and drink are used to nourish life. If food causes obstruction, it can instead become harmful. Unless one is taking medicine or refining elixirs (referring to Daoist practices of consuming medicinal juices or pills), how can one avoid eating? I often see that ordinary people are unfamiliar with health preservation and regulation, leading to a surge in diseases. If one does not fall ill due to diet, but wishes to preserve life, one must know what foods are strictly forbidden. The flavors consumed may be suitable for certain conditions or harmful to the body. If suitable, they benefit the physique; if harmful, they cause disease. Cases where this leads to danger are generally difficult to treat. When decocting herbs to extract juices for detoxification, although it is said to be for emergency rescue, it should not be drunk hot. Various toxic conditions worsen with heat, so they should be consumed cold. (Regarding the character "ruo" [if] in the phrase "if not caused by diet," Xu believed it might be a typo for "wu" [no], while Shen thought it might be "mo" [must not].)
[Cheng Lin] Generally, substances that are toxic must be hot in nature. Drinking them hot will assist their toxic power.
Note: Wang Chong's *Lunheng* (Balanced Inquiries), in the chapter "On Poison," states: Poison is the hot qi of the Sun. When humans are poisoned, they feel bloated and uncomfortable because their bodies cannot tolerate it. Intolerance is called poison. It also states: All things under heaven that are born containing the qi of the Sun possess venom or stings. Among insects, these are pit vipers, bees, and wasps; among plants, they are croton seeds and wild kudzu; among fish... Thus, it is known that toxic substances are all hot.
Liver diseases forbid pungent flavors. Heart diseases forbid salty flavors. Spleen diseases forbid sour flavors. Lung diseases forbid bitter flavors. Kidney diseases forbid sweet flavors. One should not eat liver in spring, heart in summer, lungs in autumn, or kidneys in winter. In the four seasons' transition months (the last month of each season), one should not eat spleen. Analysis: Not eating liver in spring is because when liver qi is prosperous, spleen qi is weak. Eating liver would further tonify the liver, making the weakness of spleen qi even more severe, to the point of being incurable. Also, during times when liver qi is prosperous, one should not allow death-qi to enter the liver, fearing damage to the soul. If it is not a time when liver qi is prosperous, using liver to tonify the liver is good. The same applies to other organs. ("Shang" [injure], originally written as "Fu" [repeat] by Xu and Cheng, is now corrected according to Zhao's edition and *Jinjian*.)
[Cheng Lin] The upper paragraph discusses from the perspective of the Five Elements generation and restriction, while the lower paragraph discusses taboos. The six domestic animals and six beasts were used by sages for nourishing life and serving the dead. Their dietary taboos must also be carefully observed.
Note: *Han Shu: Yiwenzhi* (Book of Han: Treatise on Literature) records twelve volumes of *Shennong Huangdi Shijin* (Shennong and Yellow Emperor's Food Taboos). Is the content contained in this chapter a remnant of that work?
Generally, liver should not be eaten lightly. If the animal died naturally, the harm is even greater. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* says: Crush rhizoma polygonati officinalis (Fuzi) into powder, take one cun-bi dose three times a day.)
[*Jinjian*] States that when livestock or beasts are about to be slaughtered, they are inevitably frightened, and anger resides in the liver. Eating such meat is unfavorable. Hence, it is said that it should not be eaten lightly. If a beast dies naturally, it is likely poisoned or died of an epidemic, and thus should definitely not be eaten.
*Waitai Miyao* (Secret Essentials of the Outer Cabinet) quotes Zhang Wenzhong: There is also a prescription for poisoning from eating raw liver. Take rhizoma polygonati officinalis (Fuzi) one cun-bi dose, three times a day. It must be taken with ginger decoction. Otherwise, toxicity will generate spontaneously.
Note: *Sanyuan Yanshou Shu* (Book of Extending Life for Three Origins) states: The shock-wind upon death enters the heart, and the departing qi returns to the liver. Neither should be eaten in large quantities, as they will surely harm humans.
Generally, the heart is the abode of spiritual consciousness (Shenshi). Do not eat it. Doing so will result in karmic retribution in future lives.
[Cheng Lin] Although livestock and beasts differ from humans, their hearts are also the abodes of spiritual consciousness. Do not eat them. The law of cause and effect in life and death is undoubtedly true.
Meat and liver that do not touch dust when dropped to the ground should not be eaten. Pork that floats when thrown into water should not be eaten.
[Cheng Lin] These involve strange phenomena. Eating them will surely bring extraordinary harm. The following cases—water moving automatically, blood flowing continuously, and dust not adhering—are similar.
Various meats and fish that dogs do not eat and birds do not peck at should not be eaten. ("Zhu" [various], Xu and Shen read as "Zhu" [pig], which is incorrect. Same below.)
[*Jinjian*] Meat that poultry and beasts refuse to eat must be toxic and should not be consumed.
Various meats that are not dry, do not move when roasted over fire, and move automatically when seeing water should not be eaten. ("Bu dong" [do not move], Cheng and *Jinjian* read as "Er dong" [but move]. Below "shi" [eat], Zhao's edition has "zhi" [particle]). Meat containing red dots like cinnabar should not be eaten.
[*Jian*] Red dots are accumulations of foul blood. This color indicates bad quality, hence do not eat.
Meat of the six domestic animals with continuous warm blood should not be eaten. Meat from animals corresponding to one's parents' zodiac sign or one's own birth year zodiac sign makes the spirit and soul uneasy.
[Cheng Lin] Benevolent and filial persons should recognize this themselves.
Xiao Ji's *Wuxing Dayi* (Great Meaning of the Five Phases) from the Sui Dynasty states: The twelve earthly branches are all the qi of the Dipper stars, scattered to form human destinies, linked to the Big Dipper. Hence they are used as zodiac signs. *Chunqiu Yun Dou Shu* (Spring and Autumn Movement of the Dipper Pivot) states: The Pivot star scatters into Dragon and Horse; Xuan star scatters into Tiger; Ji star scatters into Dog; Cui star scatters into Snake; Yuheng star scatters into Rooster, Rabbit, Rat; Heyang star scatters into Goat and Ox; Yaoguang star scatters into Monkey and Ape. All these correspond to heavenly stars above and annual destinies below.
After eating fatty meat and hot soup, one must not drink cold water.
[*Jinjian*] After eating fatty meat and hot soup, drinking cold water subsequently causes cold and heat to clash, blocking the diaphragm. If there is no abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrhea, it will surely develop into a mass disorder. Be cautious, be cautious.
Various internal organs and fish that do not get dirty with dust when thrown to the ground should not be eaten. Spoiled rice, rotten meat, and smelly fish, if eaten, all harm humans.
[Cheng Lin] Items that have already decayed and rotted are certainly unsuitable for the internal organs. Eating them harms humans. Smelly and foul items are not eaten.
Meat from animals that died naturally with closed mouths should not be eaten.
[Cheng Lin] Naturally dead animals are already toxic. If the mouth is closed, the toxin cannot escape, so it should not be eaten.
Six domestic animals that die naturally are all deaths from epidemics, thus containing toxins, and should not be eaten.
[*Jinjian*] Epidemic toxins kill livestock. Their meat must contain epidemic toxins, hence it should not be eaten.
Beasts that die naturally facing north, or lying prone on the ground, are lethal if eaten.
[Cheng Lin] "Shou" refers to the direction of the head. Beasts that die facing the direction of slaughter, or those that do not lie stiffly or slantingly after death but lie prone, possess spiritual awareness. Hence, eating them kills humans. Tan Gong said: Foxes die facing their hills, leopards die facing mountains, rejoicing in life and not forgetting their roots. Do beasts lack spiritual awareness?
Eating raw meat until full and then drinking milk transforms into white worms. ([Original Note] Alternatively, blood gu [parasitic disease].)
[Cheng Lin] Raw meat is not meant for human consumption. Eating raw meat and drinking milk is practiced in Northwest China.
Those with weak spleen and stomach will invariably develop worms or gu parasites.
[*Jian*] Eating raw meat until full and then drinking yogurt or cheese creates damp-heat, inevitably generating white worms.
Beef from cattle that died of epidemics causes severe diarrhea if eaten, and also leads to hard accumulations. Laxatives should be used to purge it.
[*Jian*] Beef from epidemic deaths is toxic and should not be eaten. If eaten and causing severe diarrhea, it is because the toxin is exiting from below. Or it may cause hard accumulations; laxatives should be used to guide it out.
Dried meat stored in rice jars becomes toxic, and eating it after summer induces kidney diseases.
[*Jian*] Dried meat stored in rice jars absorbs damp-heat and stagnant qi. Those eaten after summer are corrupted. Eating the corrupt qi enters the kidney, thus inducing kidney disease.
Prescription for poisoning from self-dead six domestic animals' meat: (Note: According to *Qianjin Fang*, the character "shi" [eat] is missing after "zhi" [treat].) Rhizoma phellodendri (Huangbai) bark, crushed and taken one cun-bi dose. (*Qianjin Fang* says: Take rhizoma phellodendri (Huangbai) powder one cun-bi dose with water.)
Prescription for poisoning from Yu Rou (stagnant meat) and Lou Fu (leaking dried meat): Burn dog feces, take one cun-bi dose with wine. Taking human sweat dirt (Ren Rugu) with each dose is also good. ○ Drink three sheng of raw chive juice, which is also effective. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*: "Dog" is written as "Human", "Chive" as "Scallion". Below "sheng", there are five characters: "mix with a little water".)
*Zhoubing Yuanhou Lun* (Source Book of Symptoms and Pathogenesis of All Diseases) states: Yu Rou poison refers to various raw and cooked meats placed in containers with tight lids, where the qi accumulates and cannot escape, becoming Yu Rou, which is toxic. Unfortunately, eating it can kill. Mild cases also suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and discomfort. It also states: Various dried meats soaked by rain leaking from old thatched roofs have great toxicity. Eating them leads to acute symptoms within three days, which are incurable. *Qianjin Fang* commentary quotes Zhang Wenzhong: Water from thatched roofs soaking dried meat is called Lou Fu. It also states: Meat sealed in tight containers overnight is called Lou Fu.
Prescription for poisoning from dried meat stored in millet: Boil soybeans in thick decoction, drink several sheng to resolve. It also treats Li Rou (fox meat) Lou Fu and other poisons. ("Li" [fox], *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* and *Waitai Miyao* quoting Zhang Wenzhong write as "Zhu" [various]. *Qianjin Fang* does not record this prescription, saying: Qu (yeast) one liang, salt two cuo, boil in one sheng of water, take, it is good.)
Prescription for poisoning from eating raw meat: Dig deep three chi into the earth, take three sheng of soil from below, add five sheng of water, boil until clear, drink one sheng to recover.
[Cheng Lin] Above three chi is called manure, below three chi is called soil. Soil can resolve all toxins, not just meat toxins.
[*Jian*] Earth浆 (Di Jiang/Earth Slurry) resolves various toxins. Digging up yellow earth with seeping spring water is called Di Jiang. "Three chi" is an approximate measure. Without seeing yellow earth, it is all filthy soil. Only with yellow earth can it be taken.
Note: Hong Jing's annotation on Di Jiang in *Zhenglei Bencao* states: This involves digging a pit three chi deep, pouring in fresh well water, stirring until turbid, letting it settle briefly, and taking the clear liquid. Hence it is called Di Jiang or Tu Jiang. The explanation in *Jinjian* has no apparent source.
Prescription for poisoning from six domestic animals and birds/beasts' livers: Soak fermented soybeans (Douchi) in water, squeeze out the juice, drink several sheng to recover.
[Cheng Lin] Douchi is made from black soybeans and can resolve various toxins from livestock fetuses. (Note: Based on the indications for Douchi in *Bencao Jing Jiu Jing*).
Horses without "night eyes" (a reflective layer in the eye) on their legs should not be eaten.
[Cheng Lin] Night eyes are located above the knees of the front legs of horses. Horses with this feature can travel at night. Also known as Fuchan Shi.
[*Jinjian*] All horses have night eyes. If absent, the form is abnormal, hence do not eat. Zhang Ding in *Ben Gang* states: Horses with horns, horses without night eyes, white horses with green hooves, and white horses with black heads should all not be eaten. They induce madness.
Eating sour horse meat without drinking alcohol kills. (Cheng edition reads "Suan" [sour] as "Jun" [steed]. Xu and Shen say "Suan" should be "Suan" [sour], originating from the story of the commoner under Mount Qi of Duke Mu of Qin. Generally, horse meat is sour. *Waitai Miyao* quoting Zhang Wenzhong also writes "Jun".)
[Cheng Lin] Horse meat is bitter, cold, and toxic, hence alcohol is drunk to resolve it. Meng Shen said: For those who feel chest oppression after eating horse meat, drinking clear wine resolves it, while cloudy wine aggravates it. Han Feizi stated: Duke Mu of Qin lost a fine steed and saw someone eating it. He said, "Those who eat fine steed meat without drinking alcohol will die." He gave them wine. Three years later, the person who ate the steed meat exerted himself to death to relieve Duke Mu's siege.
Note: The story of Duke Mu is also found in *Lüshi Chunqiu*, and *Zhoubing Yuanhou Lun* also states: Fine steed meat and meat under the saddle both contain toxins and should not be eaten. Eating them causes death. Cheng's annotation is correct.
Horse meat should not be eaten hot, as it damages the heart.
[*Jinjian*] Horses belong to Fire. The meat is hot and fiery, fearing damage to the heart. It should be eaten cold.
Meat under the horse saddle kills if eaten. (*Waitai Miyao* quotes Wenzhong, *Qianjin Fang* Huangdi states: Meat under the saddle of a white horse, with black color penetrating the flesh, harms the five viscera if eaten.)
[Cheng Lin] Meat under the saddle is often putrid and toxic. Eating it surely kills.
White horses with black heads should not be eaten. (*Waitai Miyao* quotes *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, same below.) White horses with green hooves should not be eaten.
[Cheng Lin] *Huqian Jing* states: White horses with green hooves are dangerous horses. Riding them is unfavorable to humans. Eating them surely brings harm.
Eating horse meat and pork until full, then sleeping while drunk, is a major taboo.
[*Jinjian*] Horse meat belongs to Fire, pork to Water. Eating them together is already discordant. Sleeping while drunk and full damages spleen qi. Hence it is a major taboo.
*Ben Gang* by Meng Shen states: Eating horse meat with pork causes cholera-like disorder.
Donkey or horse meat combined with pork causes cholera-like disorder.
[Cheng Lin] Mixing various meats damages the intestines and stomach, disturbing the viscera, thus causing cholera-like disorder.
Horse liver and hair should not be eaten recklessly. They are toxic and harm humans.
[Cheng Lin] Horse liver and hair have great toxicity and should not be eaten recklessly. Horse liver is also named Xuanfeng.
Wang Chong's *Lunheng* states: Horse liver has vigorous and potent toxicity, hence eating the liver of a running horse kills.
Prescription for horse liver poisoning, for those infected but not yet dead: Seven pairs (14) male rat droppings, powdered, mixed with water and taken, twice a day. ([Original Note]: The pointed tips of the droppings are used. ○ "Shi" [is], Cheng writes as "Xiong" [male]. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, and *Waitai Miyao* all write "Liang Dou Jian" [two pointed tips].)
[Cheng Lin] Horses are born bearing Fire qi. Fire cannot generate Water, hence they have liver but no gallbladder, and the Wood organ is deficient. Thus, eating its liver causes death. Emperor Wu of Han said: Do not eat horse liver when eating meat. He also said: Wen Cheng died from eating horse liver. Wei Zhuang said: Leaving the liver when eating horse reveals its toxicity. Horses eat rat droppings and get bloated. Hence rat droppings are used to treat horse liver poison, utilizing the mutual restraint of natures.
Note: "Do not eat horse liver when eating meat" is seen in *Shiji: Rulin Zhuan* (Records of the Grand Historian: Biographies of Confucian Scholars), spoken by Emperor Jing. Cheng's note is mistaken. It was actually Emperor Wu who spoke it.
Another prescription: Take one cun-bi of human sweat dirt (Ren Rugu), take it, it is good.
[Cheng Lin] Ren Rugu is formed from sweat. It tastes salty and is toxic. It also follows the principle of using toxicity to resolve toxicity.
[*Jian*] Ren Rugu is head dirt. Take one cun-bi, dissolve in wine, and administer. Vomiting is ideal.
Note: *Qianjin Fang* states: Prescription for poisoning from wild vegetables, horse liver, meat, and various dried meats. Take head dirt, size of a jujube pit, swallow it, it revives the dead. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* states: For eating six domestic animals and birds/beasts, take one qian-bi of head dirt.
*Waitai Miyao* quotes Zhang Wenzhong: Take one qian-bi of head dirt to cure. Zhongjing and *Qianjin Fang* agree. Also *Bencao Fujifang* (Appendix Formulas of Materia Medica), for self-dead meat poison, take one qian of head dirt from a headscarf, dissolve in hot water to induce vomiting.
Da Ming states: Head dirt resolves gu poison and mushroom poison. Dissolve in rice drink or wine, and induce vomiting as the limit. Based on the above prescriptions, *Jinjian* is correct. However, human sweat dirt also induces vomiting, as seen in *Rumen Shiqin*.
Prescription for poisoning from eating horse meat, nearing death: (*Waitai Miyao* quotes Zhang Wenzhong: Prescription for severe diarrhea after eating horse meat. Zhongjing agrees. Note: *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* also agrees.) Fermented soybeans (Xiangchi) (two liang ○ *Waitai* writes two hundred grains). Apricot kernels (Xingren) (three liang ○ *Waitai* writes twenty pieces).
These two ingredients, steam for the duration of one meal, crush when cooked, and take, twice a day. (*Waitai* writes: Steam these two ingredients together with cooking rice, crush into pills, take, immediate cure. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* writes: Steam with five sheng of rice, crush when cooked, finish taking in two mornings.)
[Cheng Lin] Xiangchi resolves toxins, Xingren promotes qi movement, thus the toxin can be removed.
Another prescription: Decoct rhizoma phragmitis (Lugen) juice and drink it, it is good. (*Qianjin Fang* states: Drink rhizoma phragmitis (Lugen) juice, bathing with it also resolves it.)
[*Jian*] Rhizoma phragmitis (Lugen) is sweet in taste and cold in nature, resolving various meat toxins.
Cattle that died of epidemics, with red or yellow eyes, are a major taboo to eat.
[Cheng Lin] Cattle dying of epidemics with red/yellow eyes retain epidemic pestilence toxins. Eating them is a major taboo.
Eating beef with pork inevitably causes tapeworms. (*Qianjin Fang* Huangdi states.)
[Cheng Lin] Beef has a stagnating nature, pork induces wind. If not digested in the stomach, it brews damp-heat, generating worms. Some eat them together without developing worms, depending on the person's stomach qi.
Green ox intestines should not be eaten with dog meat.
[Cheng Lin] Green ox refers to water buffalo. Its intestines are warm in nature, dog meat is hot in nature. Warm and hot substances should not be eaten together.
Ox lungs, from March to May, contain worms like horse tails. Cut them out and do not eat. Eating them harms humans.
[Cheng Lin] During the transition of spring and summer, damp-heat steams and stagnates. Oxen contract damp-heat from grass, causing worms to grow in the stomach and enter the lung orifices. Hence, do not eat them.
Sheep, cattle, and pig meat should not be steamed or roasted using mulberry or paper mulberry wood. It causes worms to grow in the abdomen.
[*Jian*] Ancients often used mulberry fire for refining medicines. Mulberry fruit strengthens the spleen and promotes water metabolism. Paper mulberry wood can also be burned. Why would steaming/roasting meat with it generate worms? Perhaps their natures are contrary.
Beef from cows that ate snakes kills humans. How do we know? Those that ate snakes have hair growing backwards.
*Zhoubing Yuanhou Lun* states: All poisonous beef cases occur because poisonous snakes are in the grass, and cows accidentally eat them, dying. Or snakes spit poison on the grass, and cows eating the grass also die. This beef has great toxicity.
Prescription for eating beef from cows that ate snakes, nearing death: Drink one sheng of human milk, immediate recovery.
Another prescription: Wash head with rice water, drink one sheng to recover. Cut ox tripe finely, boil in ten dou of water until reduced to one sheng, drink warm. Recovery occurs with heavy sweating.
[Cheng Lin] Zang Qi said: In the North, thin cattle are often injected with snakes through the nose. Their liver is singular (du gan). Human milk can resolve the toxicity of singular-liver beef. Beef from cows that ate snakes is likely singular-liver beef. Washing the head with rice water and drinking utilizes the head dirt's ability to vomit out the toxin. Boiling and eating ox tripe utilizes the affinity of similar species, seeking similar qi, inducing heavy sweating to expel the toxin.
[*Jian*] Using ox tripe is not very good.
*Bencao* entry on Human Milk, *Bielu* states: Resolves toxicity of singular-liver beef. Combined with thick fermented bean juice, it is miraculous. Note: Ox tripe is the ox stomach. *Ben Gang* entry on Ox Stomach Appendix Formula cites this formula.
Prescription for poisoning from eating beef: Licorice root (Gancao), decoct juice and drink, immediately resolved. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* says: Drink one to two sheng.)
[Cheng Lin] Licorice root (Gancao) can resolve hundred toxins.
Mutton should not be eaten by those with existing internal heat.
[Cheng Lin] The five viscera of sheep are neutral and warm, only the meat belongs to Fire and is greatly hot. Those with existing heat should not eat it.
Shizhen stated: Mutton is greatly hot. In febrile diseases, epidemic diseases, and after malaria, eating it will surely cause fever and endanger life.
Mutton should not be eaten with raw fish or cheese. It harms humans. (*Qianjin Fang* Huangdi states.)
[Cheng Lin] Raw fish belongs to the category of preserved fish. Cheese belongs to dairy. Eating raw fish and cheese alone can cause internal masses. Adding mutton is certainly not beneficial.
Among sheep hoof joints, there are white pearl-like structures named Yang Xuanjin. Eating them induces madness. (Xu and Shen omit "Yang" before "Xuan". *Qianjin Fang* Huangdi states.)
[Cheng Lin] [*Jian*] The meaning of this is unclear.
White sheep with black heads: Eating their brain causes intestinal abscess. (*Qianjin Fang* Huangdi states. Same below.)
[Cheng Lin] Sheep brain is toxic. Eating it induces wind diseases and damages essence and qi. It not only causes intestinal abscess. Medical texts only use it as an external application.
Sheep liver eaten with raw Sichuan pepper damages the five viscera.
[*Jian*] Both sheep liver and raw Sichuan pepper belong to Fire. Eating them together may damage the five viscera.
Pork eaten with sheep liver causes chest oppression.
[Cheng Lin] Pork can close blood vessels. Eating it with sheep liver causes qi stagnation, hence chest oppression. Pork eaten with raw coriander rots the navel.
[Cheng Lin] Coriander damages spirit and induces chronic diseases. Pork causes fatigue and reduces essence, inducing chronic diseases. It is fitting that they should not be eaten together. If it rots the navel, it cannot be resolved.
Pig fat should not be eaten with plums.
[*Jian*] Pig fat is slippery and lubricating, plums are sour and astringent. Their natures are contrary. Hence they should not be eaten together.
Pork eaten with marshmallow leaves reduces qi.
[Cheng Lin] Marshmallow leaves are cold and purgative, generating phlegm and inducing wind. Pork causes fatigue. Eating them together does more than just reduce qi. [*Jian*] The meaning of this is unclear.
Deer meat should not be made into soup with cattail shoots. It induces malignant sores. (Meat, originally written as "Ren" [person], now corrected according to Xu, Cheng, Shen, and *Jinjian*. He, *Jinjian* writes as "He" [combine]. *Qianjin Fang* Huangdi states.)
[Cheng Lin] Deer meat can be eaten from September to January. Eating it in other months induces cold pain. Cattail shoots are likely similar to cattail stems. This needs detailed verification.
[*Jian*] Inducing malignant sores, the meaning of this is unclear.
