【脾脏图】\pj-j14.bmp

[Spleen Organ Diagram] \pj-j14.bmp
The Spleen weighs two jin and three liang, is flat and broad three cun, and five cun long. Adjacent to it is half a jin of dispersed paste (pancreas). It is located beside the twelfth thoracic vertebra, covering the Taicang (Stomach). The Spleen governs enclosing blood and warming the five Zang organs.
In the center corresponds to Yellow, entering into communication with the Spleen, opening into the mouth, storing essence in the Spleen. Therefore, diseases manifest at the root of the tongue. Its flavor is Sweet, its category is Earth, its animal is the Ox, its grain is Ji (Millet).
The center generates Dampness; Dampness generates Earth; Earth generates Sweet flavor; Sweet flavor nourishes the Spleen. The Spleen generates flesh/muscle; flesh/muscle generates Lung. The Spleen governs the mouth. In Heaven it is Dampness, in Earth it is Soil.
Its emotion is Pensiveness (Si); excessive pensiveness injures the Spleen; Anger overcomes Pensiveness. Dampness injures flesh; Wind overcomes Dampness. Sweet flavor injures flesh; Sour flavor overcomes Sweet.
The Spleen harmonizes with flesh; its luster manifests in the lips. The Liver controls the Spleen. The Spleen and Stomach are the officials of the granary, from which the five flavors arise.
The Spleen is the root of the granary, the residence of Ying-Qi. Its luster manifests in the white skin around the lips; its substance fills the muscles. This belongs to the category of Supreme Yin, communicating with Earth Qi (Corrected according to Mr. Hua Shi). The Spleen is Earth, a solitary organ that irrigates the four directions (other organs).
The Spleen governs the four limbs and transports fluids for the Stomach. (Zhu Danxi said: The Spleen possesses the quiet virtue of Kun (Earth) but has the vigorous function of Qian (Heaven), like a mare moving across the earth without force.)
The Spleen governs the center and often nourishes the four Zang organs during the last eighteen days of each season, not solely governing one season.
Spleen Qi connects to the mouth; when the mouth is harmonious, one can perceive the flavors of grains.
When Spleen Qi is deficient, one dreams of insufficient food and drink. When receiving its proper season (Late Summer and the last eighteen days of each season), one dreams of building walls and houses.
The color of the Spleen should resemble yellow rosy gauze wrapping realgar (bright and radiant), not like yellow loess (dull and dry). (One version says Atractylodis Rhizoma color).
When Spleen Qi perishes, the pulses fail to nourish the lips and mouth. The lips are the root of the muscles. If pulses do not nourish, muscles become rough and unsmooth. If muscles are unsmooth, they become full/tense. If muscles are full, the lips turn outward/retract. If lips retract, the flesh dies first. Condition worsens on Jia day, death occurs on Yi day.
