Book: Zhenjiu Zisheng Jing (Aid to Acupuncture and Moxibustion) Author: Wang Zhizhong Dynasty: Southern Song Dynasty, Jiading 12th Year Chapter: Spleen Pain (See also Heart and Abdominal Pain) / Heart Pain Category: Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Fushe (GB26) treats hernia and masses. It treats acute pain in the spleen, where qi rushes up and down along the hypochondrium to assault the heart, accompanied by abdominal fullness and accumulations of qi assaulting both breasts. Shangqiu (SP5) treats low mood caused by spleen deficiency. (See entries for Intestinal Murmuring and Vomiting). Sanyinjiao (SP6) treats heaviness of the body caused by spleen disease. (See entry for Abdominal Distension).
I once suffered from chronic spleen pain. After taking medicines for spleen diseases, my abdomen became distended. Reluctantly, I used a prescription from *Qiyu Fang*: I wrapped powdered prepared Curcuma zedoaria (Ezhhu) in flour, decocted it with water, wine, and vinegar, and took it orally. The pain ceased immediately. Later, I told others about this, and they said that taking powdered Alpinia officinarum (Gaoliangjiang) mixed with rice drink was also effective. Later, Professor Zheng transmitted another prescription: take Tsaoko Cardamom Fruit (Caoguo), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusuo), Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi), and Myrrh (Moyao), mix them with wine, and take three qian. It feels as if the pain has been picked away by hand. Grind equal parts of Caoguo and Wulingzhi into powder; this is also a mild formula. Those with this condition should take it. If the patient does not vomit or have diarrhea, but suffers severe heart pain that is lighter during the day and worse at night, decoct dried sour plum (Gan Yanmei) with tea and take it; the effect is miraculous. If using moxibustion, suitable acupoints include Shangguan (CV22), Zhongwan (CV12), Xiaguan (CV20), Pishu (BL20), and Sanyinjiao (SP6).
When the Heart is in excess, there is sudden severe pain in the chest; when deficient, there is mental restlessness, palpitations, inability to move, and loss of intelligence. Neiguan (PC6) is the primary point for these conditions. (From *Qianjin Fang*). For sudden heart pain with sweating, puncture Dadun (LR1) to bleed, and the pain will stop immediately. Xinshu (BL15), Danzhong (CV17), Tonggu (BL43), Jueque (CV14), Taicang (CV25), Shenfu (CV23), Men (likely referring to a specific point contextually, possibly Ximen PC4 or similar, kept as Men), Quze (PC3), and Daling (PC7) treat heart pain. Qimen (LR14), Changqiang (GV1), Tiantu (CV22), Xiabai (LU2), and Zhongchong (PC9) treat heart pain with shortness of breath. Chize (LU5) treats heart pain with a feeling of chest fullness, mental restlessness and stifling, shortness of breath, and insufficient respiration. RanGu (KI2) treats a sensation of the heart hanging empty, shortness of breath, and insufficient respiration.
For chest oppression and pain with rebellious Qi pulling into the small intestine, moxa Jueque (CV14) fourteen cones. Shenshu (BL23), Fuliou (KI7), Daling (PC7), and Yunmen (LU2) treat heart pain like a hanging sensation. Jianshi (PC5) treats a sensation of the heart hanging like hunger. Zhigou (SJ6), DaXi (KI3), and RanGu (KI2) treat heart pain like a needle prick. In severe cases, if coldness extends to the joints, death occurs. Xingjian (LR2) treats heart pain where the complexion is pale grey like dead ash, and the patient cannot take deep breaths all day. (From *Tongren Jing*). Jiawei (CV15) treats coldness in the heart with fullness and inability to eat, Xifen (a type of cough with blood), Jue heart pain, and frequent hiccups. For Xinhan (Heart Hernia) with sighing, Zhongwan (CV12) treats heart pain and difficulty in bending and stretching. (*Jia Yi Jing* states: Body cold, heart pain rushing upward, coma and unconsciousness). Linqi (GB41) treats chest bi and heart pain, with inability to turn over. (*Jia Yi Jing* states: Difficulty breathing, pain in unpredictable locations). Fujie (ST28) (See Umbilicus), Xingjian (LR2) (See Abdominal Pain) treat pain assaulting the heart. Tongli (HT5) treats sudden pain with mental annoyance, internal restlessness, frequent yawning and stretching, palpitations, and sadness. (*Qianjin Fang* and *Tongren Jing* are identical). Lingdao (HT4) treats heart pain, where sorrow and fear trigger each other, and convulsions occur.
Jianli (CV11) treats heart pain rushing upward to the heart and anorexia. (*Mingtang Jing* states: Heart pain with body edema). Zhangmen (LR13) treats heart pain with vomiting. Taiyuan (LU9) [Text says Daquan, likely error for Taiyuan given context of Lung/Heart interaction and location, but translating literally as Daquan per instruction fidelity, though medically suspect] treats heart pain with lung distension and rebellious Stomach Qi.
Jiawei (CV15) treats coldness in the heart with fullness and inability to eat. Dadu (SP2) and Taibai (SP3) treat sudden diarrhea with heart pain and abdominal distension, where heart pain is particularly severe. Shangguan (CV22) treats heart pain with three types of parasites, excessive saliva, and inability to turn over. Burong (ST19) and Qimen (LR14) treat sharp heart pain and preference for belching with acid regurgitation. Shaochong (HT9) treats heart pain with coldness. Shangqiu (SP5) treats cold pain below the heart and chest bi heart pain, treated by Tianjing (SJ10) and Linqi (GB41). Alternatively, moxa Danzhong (CV17) one hundred cones. (See Chest Bi entry). Danzhong (CV17) and Tianjing (SJ10) treat chest and heart pain, and various heart-abdomen diseases. For heart pain, moxa Taicang (CV25) and Ganshu (BL18). (See Heart Fullness entry). For heart, abdomen, and chest fullness and obstructive pain, moxa Ganshu (BL18). (See Hypochondriac Distension entry). Zhongwan (CV12) treats heart pain. (*Tongren Jing* see Heart Fullness). Jianli (CV11) treats heart pain. (*Mingtang Jing* see Rebellious Qi). Geshu (BL17) treats heart pain with generalized bi syndrome. (See Masses entry). Zulinqi (GB41) treats heart pain with generalized bi syndrome, pain in unpredictable locations. (See Menstruation entry). Yuji (LU10) treats Xinbi. (*Mingtang Jing* see Rebellious Qi).
My wife from Jingzhou, while caring for her sick parent, did not eat for several days and consequently developed heart-spleen pain. Upon attack, it assaulted the heart and abdomen, and later heart pain followed suit. When it became unbearable, she said goodbye to her children and took medicine, but the pain worsened. Moxibustion on the whole body was intolerable. She had her children use fire needles to prick slightly, without restriction to heart or abdomen areas. The pain settled quickly, and she wanted to get up. It was miraculous.
Method for treating cold pain in the heart and abdomen called "Yu Baodu": Take four liang of Needle Sand (Zhen Sha), stir-fry until smoke appears. Add half a liang of Alum (Bai Fan), half a qian of Nao Sha, and half a qian of Fen Shuang. Mix evenly with fresh water until slightly damp. Apply to the skin with leather paper, keep warm in the bosom. When hot, place on the umbilicus, Qihai (CV6), Shimen (CV5), and Guanyuan (CV4) points to greatly tonify the original Qi. Or place in other cold places; sweating will lead to immediate recovery. (Tested by myself). This medicine loses heat when dry; remix with fresh water and reheat; it can be used over ten times. When the medicinal power is exhausted, dry it in the sun, add alum etc., and it heats up again. My brother Shuhao transmitted a formula using only Needle Sand and Mud Alum, with the same efficacy. Is it because Nao Sha and Fen Shuang are expensive that they are not used?
I previously suffered from Xinbi. Upon attack, the pain was unbearable. I urgently placed a tile in charcoal fire until red-hot, took it out, threw it into rice vinegar, fished it out, wrapped it in two or three layers of paper, and placed it on the painful area. The pain subsided slightly. Replace when cold. This was passed down by elders. Later, I read *Qianjin Fang*, which states: For any cold pain in the heart and abdomen, roast half salt for熨 (hot compress), or roast silkworm sand, burn bricks/stones for steaming compress to utilize internal warmth to stop pain, or steam earth, which is also very good. I realized the method used by my family originated from *Qianjin Fang*. Another day, heart pain was severe. I urgently moxa Zhongwan (CV12) several cones. I felt cold air rising from both sides of the lower abdomen upwards. When it reached the moxa site, it dispersed. This is the merit of moxibustion. *Ben Shi Fang* records Wang Sihe's discussion on Xin Zhong (Palpitations), stating it is not true Xin Zhong. The great collateral of the Stomach is named Jianli (CV11), connecting the chest, diaphragm, and between the breasts. Deficiency with phlegm causes movement, followed by bursts of heat after a moment; this is the symptom. If so, one should moxa Jianli (CV11). But Zhongwan (CV12) is considered the key point.
Lingdao (HT4) treats heart pain, where sorrow and fear trigger each other, convulsions, elbow flexion contracture, sudden aphonia, and inability to speak. Xiabai (LU2) treats heart pain with dry heaving, mental restlessness, and fullness. Jiquan (HT1) and Taiyuan (LU9) treat heart pain with spitting blood, aversion to cold, dry throat, delirium, and deviation of the mouth. Yinxi (HT6) (See Cholera entry), Zhongchong (PC9) treat heart pain with mental restlessness, fullness, and stiff tongue. Jueyinshu (BL20) (See Hiccup/Cough entry), Shenmen (HT7) (See Mental Restlessness entry), Linqi (GB41) treat heart pain. (See Menstruation entry). Yinjiao (DU28) treats red face, mental restlessness, and pain. Tianjing (SJ10) treats chest and heart pain. (See Rebellious Qi entry).
Xiaguan (CV20) treats unbearable heart pain. Wailing (ST29) treats heart pain like hanging downward pain. (See Abdominal Pain entry). Daling (PC7) and Shangguan (CV22) treat unbearable heart pain. (*Mingtang Jing* states inability to lie down). Zhangmen (LR13) treats panting and heart pain. (See Intestinal Murmuring entry).
Yongquan (KI1) and Jianli (CV11) treat pain below the heart and anorexia. (Xu Mi says: Heart pain with phlegm-drool, should needle Jianli). Youmen (KI15) treats heart pain in women.
