Zhongwan (CV12) treats abdominal distension and sundry diarrhea (sun xie, diarrhea with undigested food). Xialian (ST89) treats lower abdominal pain and sundry diarrhea; as well as pain between the fingers, dry lips, unconscious drooling, and inability to sweat.
Regarding hair and hernia masses (the original text here has omissions or disordered slips, retained as per original).
The *Suwen* states: If wind pathogen is contracted in spring, sundry diarrhea will inevitably occur in summer. If one knows it is caused by wind pathogen, medicinal treatment can naturally cure it. Even without using moxibustion, it does no harm.
The *Bencao Fang* records: Sundry diarrhea (sun xie) refers to food entering the intestines and stomach but failing to digest. In spring, wood qi is vigorous, generating wind pathogen from the Liver. This wind pathogen overflows into the Spleen meridian. In summer, due to cold exposure and seeking coolness in the wind, it is induced. Therefore, Xionglaowan (Chuanxiong Pill) is suitable. The formula consists of equal parts of Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi), ground into fine powder, mixed with rice paste to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take 30-50 pills each time, washed down with rice water. It treats diarrhea caused by Spleen dampness, infallible. The use of Chuanxiong to remove dampness is reasonable, so it is recorded here.
Sanyinjiao (SP6) treats watery diarrhea (tang xie, loose stools) and indigestion. (See "Abdominal Distension"). Diji (SP8), (See "Edema"), treats watery diarrhea. Diji primarily treats watery diarrhea, abdominal masses with pain, and organ bi-syndrome. Taichong (LR3) etc. treat watery diarrhea. (See "Dysentery").
I once suffered from bi-pain. After recovery, I suffered from watery diarrhea for a long time. I then moxa-ed Zhongwan (CV8, umbilicus), and subsequently stopped having diarrhea. I moxa-ed continuously for three days, and did not visit the toilet for three nights. If moxa-ing for watery diarrhea, Zhongwan (CV8) is the first choice; Sanyinjiao (SP6) etc. are secondary.
The *Bencao Fang* records: A relative of mine had watery dysenteric stool every early morning for several months. Someone said this is called Kidney Diarrhea (Shen Xie, dawn diarrhea). It is caused by the Kidney contracting yin-cold qi. Taking Wuweizi San (Schisandra Powder) to treat watery diarrhea is reasonable, so it is appended here.
I previously suffered from watery diarrhea, needing to go to the toilet every dawn. Someone taught me to take Shudoufu Wan (Red Bean and Fuzi Pill), which cured me immediately. However, the formula is lost. Years later, when I suffered from this again, I only used ginger decoction with Fuzi added with Doukou (Cardamom), and was cured.
The *Suwen* states there are five types of diarrhea and dysentery. First is Wei Xie (Stomach Diarrhea): food is not digested and stool is yellow, because Stomach and Spleen are interior-exterior related, and Spleen corresponds to yellow. Second is Pi Xie (Spleen Diarrhea): abdominal distension and unceasing diarrhea, even vomiting upwards; this is a disorder of cold and heat. Third is Dachang Xie (Large Intestine Diarrhea): bowel sounds and severe pain after eating, with white dysenteric discharge; because Large Intestine and Lung are interior-exterior related, and Lung corresponds to white, hence white. Fourth is Xiaochang Xie (Small Intestine Diarrhea): emaciation and pus-blood in stool; because Small Intestine and Heart are interior-exterior related, and Heart governs blood. Fifth is Da Jia Xie (Great Hernia Diarrhea/Dysentery): tenesmus, frequent visits to the toilet with inability to defecate, and penile pain; this is Kidney Diarrhea. Various medical formulas have more than twenty classifications; this lists only five, likely summarizing the main points. Bi Yong Fang also distinguishes between red-white dysentery and gu-poison dysentery. Generally, they are all due to zang-fu cold. As Linqiu Gong said: "All lower body purging is cold." I have treated many cases of dysentery, using only Zhenling Dan, with no ineffectiveness. If ineffective, increasing the dosage makes it effective. For gu-poison dysentery, use Yemao (Cathaya argyrophylla leaf) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) decoction. (See "Ji Xiao"). Among various dysenteries, Qiyu's formula using Houpo (Magnolia Bark) and Ying Susuo (Papaveris Pericarpium) powder is best. Later generations added equal parts of Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huanglian, and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), mixed with Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), plus a few leaves of Huanggu Ye, decocted with Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Zao (Jujubae Fructus), and Wumei (Mume Fructus). I have tested it and found it effective, so I record it here. However, dysentery itself has no malignant signs, yet some die from it. Perhaps physicians mistakenly view dysentery as a heat disease and administer too many cold medicines. In emergencies, moxibustion should be applied; one should not rely solely on medicine.
Fuliu (KI7) primarily treats intestinal disorders resulting in pus-blood in stool, post-dysenteric tenesmus, and abdominal pain like colic. (See *Qianjin*). Jiaoxin (KI8) primarily treats red-white dysentery. (*Tongren* agrees). Blood leakage.
Taichong (LR3), Ququan (LR8) primarily treat watery diarrhea and bloody dysentery. Xiaochangshu (BL27) primarily treats dysentery with pus-blood of five colors, heavy tenesmus, and swelling-pain. Dantian (CV11) primarily treats incontinence of dysentery and lower abdominal cramping. Guanyuan (CV4), Taixi (KI3) primarily treat persistent dysentery. Pishu (BL20) primarily treats dysentery with anorexia, where food fails to nourish muscles. Wushu (GB26) primarily treats women's red-white leukorrhea, tenesmus, and spasms. Ququan (LR8) treats watery diarrhea and pus-blood dysentery. (*Tongren* see "Wind-Lao"). Zhonglvshu (BL29) treats intestinal cold causing red-white dysentery. (*Mingtang* agrees). Pangguangshu (BL28) treats dysentery with abdominal pain. (*Mingtang*). Jishu (GV12) treats warm disease accumulations leading to dysentery. (*Tongren* writes "lower purging"). Guanyuan (CV4) treats dysentery. (See "Incontinence").
For children with red-white dysentery, late autumn rectal prolapse, unbearable abdominal pain during defecation: Moxa the space below the 12th thoracic vertebra, named Jieshui (Jieji) point, one moxa cone. Huangdi treats children's gan-accumulation dysentery with rectal prolapse, emaciation, thirst, wasting appearance, where all medicines fail: Moxa three cones in the bony depression three cun above the coccyx. Qibo says: During the Three Fu days, bathe the child in peach water. At noon, moxa on that day. Wipe with green silk; it seems gano-worms come out with sweat. Divine efficacy. For children's deep-autumn cold dysentery that does not stop: Moxa three cones in the arterial pulse between two and three cun below the umbilicus. For women's watery dysenteric diarrhea: Moxa Qihai (CV6) 100 cones. For dysentery with indigestion and failure to build flesh: Moxa Pishu (BL20) according to age in cones. (*Qianjin*). For profuse purging with five types of discharge and pus-blood, heavy tenesmus and abdominal pain: Moxa Xiaochangshu (BL27) 100 cones. For incontinence of dysentery and lower abdominal cramping: Moxa Shimen (CV5) 100 cones, three times daily. For chronic dysentery unresponsive to hundred treatments: Moxa the depression on the high bone one cun below Zuoyangmen (ST26), three cun from the bifurcation of the big toe, according to age. Also, 200-300 cones at Zhongwan (CV12/CV8 context implies umbilicus area here, usually Shenque CV8 for such high counts, but text says Qi Zhong/Umbilicus), and 300 cones at Guanyuan (CV4) (moxa every ten days). For red-white dysentery, moxing Qionggu (near Changqiang GV1) is better. For limbs unable to move, excessive sweating and hole-like diarrhea: Moxa Daheng (SP15) according to age. (Rest see *Qianjin*). Dysentery sudden profuse watery discharge etc.: Moxa Qihai (CV6) 100 cones.
