Jue Tou Tong (Jue Headache). The face appears swollen and the mind is vexed. Treat with points on Foot-Yangming and Foot-Taiyin meridians. (This is due to Jue [rebellious Qi]. Pathogenic factors rebel in the meridians, ascending to disturb the head and brain, causing Jue Headache. The Foot-Yangming meridian ascends to the face; its vigorous Qi rushes upward to the head, following the optic pathway to connect with the brain. The branch of Foot-Taiyin enters the heart. Therefore, when headache is accompanied by facial swelling and mental vexation, one should select Jiexi [ST41] of Foot-Yangming and Gongsun [SP4] of Foot-Taiyin.)
Jue Tou Tong (Jue Headache). Pain in the head vessels. The patient feels sorrowful and prone to weeping. Observe the pulsating arteries on the head; if they are full and excessive, prick them until all blood is expelled, then regulate Foot-Jueyin. (Because the Liver meridian converges at the vertex. ○ One may puncture Ququan [LR8].)
Jue Tou Tong (Jue Headache). The head feels heavy and suffers from persistent pain. Drain the five rows of acupoints on the head, five points per row. (Such as Shangxing [GV23] to Houding [GV19], Wuchu [BL3] to Yubing [BL11], Linqi [GB15] to Naokong [GB13]; detailed in *Suwen: Shuire Xuelun* [Water and Heat Acupoints Chapter]). First select Shenmen [HT7] of Hand-Shaoyin, then Fuliou [KI7] of Foot-Shaoyin. ○ This is the method of "draining the South to remove Fire and tonifying the North to strengthen Water.")
Jue Tou Tong (Jue Headache). The patient has poor memory and cannot locate the pain upon pressing. (Yang pathogenic factors are in the head without a fixed location.) Select the arterial pulses on the left and right sides of the head and face, then select Dadu [SP2] of Foot-Taiyin.
Jue Tou Tong (Jue Headache). Neck pain precedes, followed by corresponding pain in the lower back and spine. First select Tianzhu [BL10], then Shenmai [BL62] and Weizhong [BL40] of Foot-Taiyang.
Jue Tou Tong (Jue Headache). Severe headache, with surging and hot pulses around the ears. Prick to bleed, then select points on Foot-Shaoyang. (The areas anterior and posterior to the ear are traversed by Foot-Shaoyang. ○ Some versions read "surging arteries".)
Zhen Tou Tong (True Headache). Severe headache, pain extending throughout the brain, cold hands and feet reaching the joints. This is incurable. (The head is the convergence of all Yang meridians; the limbs are the roots of all Yang meridians. If headache is severe and pervasive throughout the brain, with coldness reaching the joints, it indicates exhaustion of Primordial Yang and direct infiltration of Yin pathogens into the Sea of Marrow. Thus, it cannot be treated.)
Headache that cannot be treated by distal point selection occurs due to blows or falls, with stasis blood retained internally. If muscle pain persists, one may prick the painful area directly; do not select distant points. ○ (This is not a disease of the major meridians; only the stasis blood at the painful site should be pricked out; do not select distal Ying-Spring or Shu-Stream points.)
Headache that cannot be needled occurs when severe Bi syndrome leads to deterioration. (Wind, Cold, and Dampness combine to form a malignant condition, causing headache that cannot be needled.) If it occurs daily. (It still has intervals of cessation.) It can be made slightly better but not completely cured. (It cannot be fully resolved.)
Half-head Cold Pain (Unilateral cold headache). First select points on Hand-Shaoyang and Hand-Yangming. (Prick Sizhukong [TE23], Zhongzhu [TE3], Hegu [LI4].) Then select points on Foot-Shaoyang and Foot-Yangming. (Prick Toulinqi [GB15], Zulinqi [GB41], Touwei [ST8].)
Jue Xin Tong (Jue Heartache). Pain radiates to the back, accompanied by mania. (Pronounced 'ji', meaning madness.) It feels as if someone is touching the heart from behind, with the body stooping. This is Kidney Jue Heartache. (Yin pathogens rushing upward.) First select Jinggu [BL64] and Kunlun [BL60]; if needling does not resolve it, select Ranggu [KI2]. (When Qi from the Five Viscera rebels upward to affect the Heart causing pain, it is called Jue Heartache; the following follows this logic.)
Jue Xin Tong (Jue Heartache). Abdominal distension, chest fullness, and severe heart pain. This is Stomach Jue Heartache. (Often caused by food stagnation.) Select Dadu [SP2] and Taibai [SP3]. (Stomach and Spleen are exterior-interior pairs, so these points should be selected.)
Jue Xin Tong (Jue Heartache). Pain feels like being pierced by an awl, with severe heart pain. This is Spleen Jue Heartache. (Cold rebellion in the Middle Jiao.) Select Ranggu [KI2] and Taixi [KI3].
Foot sighing. Liver Jue Heartache. (Often caused by Wood-Fire depression, pathology in the Blood level.) Select Xingjian [LR2] and Taichong [LR3].
Jue Xin Tong (Jue Heartache). Lying down feels like sitting alone; heart pain alleviates occasionally, worsens with movement, complexion remains unchanged. This is Lung Jue Heartache. Select Yuji [LU10] and Taiyuan [LU9]. ('Tu' means empty. Lying down or sitting alone without support. Pain worsens with occasional movement due to rebellious Qi failing to flow smoothly and fear of movement. Unchanged complexion indicates pathology is not in the Blood. These are pathologies in the Qi level, hence called Lung Jue Heartache.)
Zhen Xin Tong (True Heartache). Cold hands and feet reaching the joints, severe heart pain. Death if onset in morning and death in evening, or onset in evening and death in morning. (Pathogenic factors directly invade the Heart Master.)
Heartache that cannot be needled is due to internal accumulation; do not select distant points. ○ (Accumulation of either Food/Stagnation or Blood stasis, retained internally, pathology in the Zang organs rather than the meridians.)
If there are intestinal parasites (Chong Jia - knot-like aggregations) and Ascaris (Jiao Hui - roundworms), small needles cannot be used. (Meaning their force is too weak to subdue them.)
When Heart and Intestine pain attacks, the pain is unbearable. Swelling and aggregation move up and down. (Abdominal swelling rises, moving without a fixed location.) Pain has pauses. (Pain when worms move, no pain when static.) Abdominal heat, thirst, and salivation indicate Ascaris. (These are Chong Jia in the intestines and stomach causing heart and abdominal pain.) Press and hold firmly with the hand to prevent movement, insert a large needle, keep it inserted for a long time until the worm stops moving, then withdraw the needle. (This is the method for treating Chong Jia and Ascaris.)
Abdominal distension and pain. The shape rises from the middle upwards. (Repeating the symptom description. If the shape naturally rises from the middle upwards, treat it as a parasitic disease. ○ HT sounds like 'peng', meaning distension.)
Deafness and inability to hear: select the point in the ear. (Hand-Taiyang Tinggong [SI19]. ○ Also select Hand-Shaoyang Guanchong [TE1] and Foot-Shaoyang Xiaoyin [GB44].)
Tinnitus: select the arterial pulse anterior to the ear. (Hand-Shaoyang Ermen [TE21]. ○ Also select Hand-Jueyin Zhongchong [PC9] and Foot-Shaoyang Xiaoyin [GB44].)
Inability to lift the thigh and hip: prick the blood vessels in the lateral aspect to release heat. (Heat) Aching and weakness in the thighs and shins. (Seeming soreness and weakness.) Mental vexation, headache, occasional vomiting and stifling sensation, dizziness followed by sweating, long-term visual blurring, sorrow turning to fear, shortness of breath and unhappiness; death within three years.
