Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart (Xin), Spleen (Pi), and Small Intestine (Xiao Chang) meridians. Its primary functions are to repel various pathogenic factors, calm the five Zang organs, stabilize the Hun and Po spirits, alleviate heart pain, resolve blood stasis, promote urination, treat the five types of Lin syndrome (dysuria), break up masses and accumulations, remove corneal opacities, and be applied externally for metal-induced wounds.
Note: Amber is formed from pine resin that has been buried underground for a thousand years. Having resided in the earth for a long time, it is suitable for entering the Spleen system. Pine trees possess resin, just as humans possess blood and fluids. Furthermore, the formation of amber implies a downward pouring action, making it also suitable for entering the Heart and Small Intestine systems. The *Neijing* states: "If the Ruler (Heart) is not clear, the twelve officials will be in danger," leading to the blockage and obstruction of the urinary pathway. After taking Amber, the spirit chamber receives its command, the five Zang organs are harmonized, and the Hun and Po are stabilized. Where can pathogens attach? How can diseases arise? Thus, the urinary pathway becomes unobstructed, and conditions such as blood stasis are all resolved! The eyes can see only when nourished by blood; when the Heart is tranquil, Ying (Nutritive) Qi is harmonious, so what need is there to worry about corneal opacities! For metal-induced wounds, the concern is merely that blood flows counter-currently in the interstices. If bleeding is stopped and harmony is restored, healing is inevitable! Zhu Danxi said: Ancient formulas used Amber with merit in drying dampness and strengthening the Spleen Earth. When the Spleen can transform and transport, Lung Qi descends, thus allowing urine to flow freely. However, in cases of dysuria due to insufficient Blood, it may instead cause suffering from dryness and urgency. Another commentary states: Poria (Fuling) is generated in Yin; Amber is born in Yang but completes its transformation in Yin. Therefore, both serve to calm the Spirit, promote diuresis, and treat disorders related to Ying Blood.
Lei Gong said: Regarding red pine resin, stone amber, water amber, flower amber, object-inclusion amber, yiyi amber, and true amber: Red pine resin resembles amber but is brittle with transverse grain patterns. Water amber mostly lacks red color, appearing pale yellow with coarse skin. Stone amber is heavy like stone, yellow in color, and unsuitable for use. Flower amber has grains resembling new horsehair tails; the pine heart grain shows one path red and another yellow. Object-inclusion amber contains apparent objects within, which is extremely miraculous. Yiyi amber is the chief among ambers, hence named Yiyi. True amber resembles blood color; when placed on cloth and rubbed, if it attracts particles the size of mustard seeds, it is genuine. For medicinal use, mix cypress seed powder with water, place it in a porcelain vessel, and position the amber within the powder...
Bitter and sweet in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen (Pi) and Lung (Fei) meridians. Its primary functions are to calm the five Zang organs, eliminate latent heat, relieve Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst), drive out various wind pathogens, treat carbuncles, ulcers, and malignant sores, as well as white alopecia, scabies, and pruritus caused by wind-qi and external trauma. It stops bleeding, kills parasites, and alleviates pain. Pine nuts tonify Qi and supplement deficiency; pine flowers clear the Heart and relieve irritability; pine needles promote hair growth, dispel wind-dampness, and are used in moxibustion for frostbite; pine joints treat chronic wind affecting bone joints and bi-syndrome pain in the legs. Long-term consumption can all help avoid grain (fasting) and prolong life.
Note: Pine resin is a sweet and warm substance, harmonious with the Spleen system. Since the Lung is the child organ of the Spleen, it enters both meridians. Conditions such as latent heat belong entirely to these two meridians; how could they not be treated? The flowers, joints, and leaves of the pine have slightly different therapeutic targets, reflecting the principle of treating proximal and distal areas respectively.
