The body's true Qi (Zhen Qi) is damaged by cold and cooling substances, which harms the Stomach Qi. When true Qi is damaged, pathogenic factors become relatively stronger; when Stomach Qi is injured, the essence from food and drink is completely lost. How can muscle tissue be generated? Only Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction) specifically tonifies true Qi and thereby benefits Stomach Qi, thus achieving complete efficacy. Moreover, this formula is not only suitable for treating back carbuncles before they ulcerate, but also for sores and ulcers that have already ulcerated. It is a pity that people are unaware of this.
Secret Formula:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 1 liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 liang, Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) 2 liang,
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 5 qian, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) each 3 qian.
This is the Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction); naturally, toxins will resolve and Qi and Blood will become robust.
Some may doubt that Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction) lacks ingredients to transform toxins. However, Jiajian Shiquan Dabu Tang (Modified Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction) is also usable, as detailed below.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (1 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1 liang), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (1 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (3 qian),
Jin Di Luo (Sonchii Japonici Herba) (3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (5 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) (2 liang).
Decoct in water and take orally.
Secret Formula:
The modified great tonifying formula is also excellent; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) each use 2 liang,
Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Jin Di Luo (Sonchii Japonici Herba) each 3 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 5 qian, Huang Qi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) 2 liang.
When a person experiences pain between the chest and diaphragm, which intensifies during coughing, and pressing on the painful area exacerbates shortness of breath, one might assume it is a lung abscess due to Lung Meridian pathology. However, who knows that it is actually heat in the Lung forming an abscess? The Lung is a delicate organ, difficult for medicinal herbs to reach directly, making treatment very challenging. Once the Lung is harmed by heat and an abscess has formed, what method should be used? The treatment strategy seems to involve clearing fire to save the Lung. However, since direct Lung medication is difficult, we must consider that the Lung's mother organ is the Spleen, which can receive medication; the organ controlled by the Lung is the Liver, and the organ that attacks the Lung is the Heart, both of which can also receive medication. By tonifying the Earth element of the Spleen Meridian, Earth generates Metal (Lung Qi). By pacifying the Wood element of the Liver Meridian, Metal cannot over-control Wood. By clearing the Fire of the Heart Meridian, Fire does not punish Metal. These three meridians benefit the Lung without damaging Lung Metal. Once Lung Qi is nourished, then using detoxifying agents to directly resolve pathogens in the Lung, how could one worry about curing the lung abscess? Use Yongfei Tang (Complete Lung Decoction):
Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) (5 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (2 liang), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (3 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria) (3 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (3 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Pain reduces after one dose, and internal resolution occurs after two doses. Generally, lung abscesses must be resolved internally and should not be allowed to discharge toxins. The method of internal resolution always involves treating the Spleen, Liver, and Heart meridians, with no other way to eliminate the abscess. One might ask: Since the Kidney is the child of the Lung, why not treat the Kidney to eliminate the abscess? It is unknown that although lung abscesses form due to fire scorching Lung Metal fluids, the root cause is actually deficiency of Lung Qi. Tonifying the Kidney might prevent Lung Qi from generating Kidney Qi, but since Lung and Kidney are connected, tonifying Kidney Water might hinder Lung Qi descent, causing fire toxins to disperse slowly. It is better to treat only these three meridians, allowing Lung Qi to be nourished and naturally transform toxins, avoiding impact on the Kidney.
Secret Formula:
For Lung Metal abscess, use 5 liang of Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), 2 liang of Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and 3 liang of Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix),
Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 5 qian, Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) 3 qian; Fu Ling (Poria) and Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) similarly applied, and the abscess will vanish.
Using Diluo Ganjie Xuanshen Tang (Sonchus, Platycodon, and Scrophularia Decoction) for this condition is also effective:
Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (2 liang), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (2 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang), Jin Di Luo (Sonchii Japonici Herba) (1 liang), Jie Geng (Platcodonis Radix) (5 liang), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) (5 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally; cure in two doses.
Secret Formula:
Also, 2 liang each of Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) and Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), 1 liang each of Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Jin Di Luo (Sonchii Japonici Herba),
Jie Geng (Platcodonis Radix) and Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) 5 qian ground. Two doses transform toxins miraculously.
If a person has chest and diaphragm pain, coughs up phlegm with increased pain, unbearable tenderness upon pressing, and first smells a fishy odor in the throat followed by vomiting pus and blood, this indicates that the lung abscess has not only formed but also ruptured. An unruptured lung abscess is easy to dissipate, but a ruptured one is difficult to treat because pus and blood do not disappear quickly. However, with proper treatment, it is not difficult. The reason for lung abscess formation is the persistence of fire in the Lung. This fire arises from Lung Qi deficiency. After Lung deficiency, fire remains in the Lung; when fire becomes excessive, the Lung knots into an abscess. Without tonifying deficiency and dispersing fire, how can unformed abscesses dissipate, formed ones resolve, and ulcerated ones heal? Therefore, deficiency must be tonified. Which organ should be tonified? One must tonify Lung Qi deficiency. Since the Lung cannot be directly tonified for Qi, tonifying Spleen and Stomach deficiency will naturally strengthen Lung Qi. Now that the abscess has ruptured and there is profuse vomiting of pus and blood, Lung Qi is even more deficient. Although pathogenic toxins remain,
one should not purge the toxins. Instead, within the process of tonifying Qi, employ attacking and dispersing methods, so toxins are easily transformed without injuring righteous Qi. Use Yongfei Tang (Complete Lung Decoction):
Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) (2 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (2 liang), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (2 liang), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (3 qian), Pu Gong Ying (Taraxaci Herba) (5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian),
Jie Geng (Platcodonis Radix) (3 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (1 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Pus increases after one dose, decreases gradually after two doses, pain lightens after three doses, lessens further after four doses, and stops after five doses. Complete success is achieved after six doses. This formula tonifies Qi in the Stomach while purging Fire in the Stomach. When Stomach Qi is robust, Lung Qi cannot decline; when Stomach Fire declines, Lung Fire cannot flourish. Thus, it can defeat toxins and generate flesh. Although the herbs do not solely target the Stomach, eight parts enter the Stomach and two parts enter the Lung; thus, treating the Stomach treats the Lung. Someone asks: "Since the lung abscess has ruptured and the disease has entered the interior, lifting Lung Qi seems inappropriate. Yu Shi (Yu Jiayan in *Bian Zheng Lu*) suggests guiding it into the intestines, yet you still use Jie Geng (Platcodonis Radix) to lift Lung Qi. This may not serve as a model." Alas! The medicines I use are primarily for treating the Stomach. Once entering the Stomach, do they not descend into the intestines? However, when Lung Qi is exhausted and its clear descending function fails, using Jie Geng (Platcodonis Radix) clears the Lung. With upper Qi unblocked, downward movement is faster. Thus, lifting from above accelerates resolution from below.
Secret Formula:

After prolonged coughing, if the lung tubes are damaged, skin is yellow and emaciated, throat voice is hoarse, spontaneous and night sweats occur, sleep is impossible, thick foul-smelling sputum is expectorated, only panting is heard, hair is brittle, and complexion is scorched, one must hold breath briefly during coughing and spit gently to relieve diaphragmatic pain; otherwise, severe pain is unbearable, breath is faint, and there is no sign of recovery. People think this is a lung abscess, but who knows it is Lung Flaccidity (Fei Wei) with sores? Such conditions are hard to rescue, but with proper treatment and good nursing, survival is possible. Lung Abscess (Fei Yong) differs from Lung Flaccidity (Fei Wei). Lung Abscess arises from fire toxins and requires rapid treatment; Lung Flaccidity results from chronic injury and requires slow treatment. Generally, fire toxins require purging within tonification, while chronic injuries require clearing within tonification. Purging and clearing differ, and tonification methods differ. In purging with tonification, large doses can be used; in clearing with tonification, small doses should be used. Do not neglect nor assist artificially; maintain a subtle balance to achieve efficacy. Use Yangfei Quwei Tang (Nourish Lung Remove Flaccidity Decoction):
Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (3 qian), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) (3 qian), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix) (5 fen), Bai Bu (Stemonae Radix) (5 fen), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (2 qian), Bai He (Lilii Bulbus) (2 qian),

Among wealthy youths who frequently consume rich flavors, roasted, fried, and grilled foods, or indulge in fine wines, leading to dry throat and tongue, expectoration of blood, panting, diaphragm pain, and insomnia, people attribute this to Lung Heat. Who knows it is Lung Flaccidity (Fei Wei) with sores? The Lung is the canopy of the five Zang organs, preferring the steaming of clear Qi and detesting the burning of dry Qi. Current diet consists entirely of pungent and hot substances, creating a mass of fire within the five Zang organs. Fire flares upward, and since Lung Metal is superior, it inevitably suffers harm. Once punished, the Lung cannot generate Kidney Water downwards. With no source for Kidney Water, the Kidney becomes drier, forcing it to draw resources from Lung Metal, further weakening and drying the Lung. Moreover, various meridians press upon it; with fierce fire and dry metal, abscess formation in the Lung is inevitable. Treatment involves transforming toxins while nourishing the Lung, and lowering fire while assisting the Kidney. Thus, existing abscesses may heal, and unformed ones may dissipate. Use Fusang Qingfei San (Mulberry Leaf Clearing Lung Powder):
Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) (1 liang), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (1 liang), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini) (3 qian), Sang Ye (Mori Folium) (5 qian), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix) (2 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian),
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (3 qian), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) (3 qian), Bai He (Lilii Bulbus) (3 qian), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (10 seeds), Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos) (1 qian), Xi Jiao Mo (Rhinocerotis Cornu Pulvis) (5 fen).
Decoct in water, mix with Xi Jiao Mo (Rhinocerotis Cornu Pulvis), and take orally. Several doses yield results. This formula treats Lung and Kidney simultaneously without directly lowering fire. The fire in the five Zang organs, caused by diet, is deficient fire rising, not excess fire. Thus, tonifying the Kidney strengthens Lung Qi; sufficient Kidney Water extinguishes deficient fire. Furthermore, tonification with dispersal prevents stagnation, making fire toxins easier to resolve.
