Gate of Throat Abscess 1: Latent Cold Throat Abscess.
Latent cold throat abscess arises from accumulated cold within the body combined with an external contraction of seasonal pathogens. The affected area is red and swollen, or purplish in color, with a floating pulse that is not rapid. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex), each at 1 qian, and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) at 3 fen. After two doses, remove Qianghuo and Gegen, add Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) at 1 qian; recovery can be expected in five days.
Gate of Throat Abscess 2: Swollen and Ulcerated Throat Abscess.
Swollen and ulcerated throat abscess results from accumulated heat in the Spleen, manifesting as redness, swelling, and ulceration, with surging and large pulses at both Guan positions. Prick the eight acupoints Shaoshang (LU11), Shangyang (LI1), Guanchong (TE1), and Shaochong (HT9) on both hands; profuse bleeding is desirable. First administer Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder), holding it on the tongue to dissolve and swallow. Then use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Yan Chao Xuanshen (Salt-fried Scrophulariae Radix) at 2 qian, Yan Chao Huangbai (Salt-fried Phellodendri Cortex) at 1 qian, Jiu Chao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix) at 1.5 qian, Sheng Dahuang (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) at 3 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) each at 1 qian, and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) at 2 qian. Decoct and take orally. After purgation, remove Dahuang and continue for three more days. Then rinse the throat with Baizhizhi Yanzhou (Cypress Branch Juice of Eighteen Divine Medicines). Recovery follows. External application of Chuiyao (blowing powder) is also used.
Gate of Throat Abscess 3: Pale White Throat Abscess.
Pale white throat abscess occurs due to cold invading the Spleen and Lungs, resulting in a non-red appearance. If cooling agents are used, pus will form within seven days; once pus forms, prick it open. At the onset of swelling, prick the four acupoints Shaoshang (LU11) and Shangyang (LI1) on both hands to release purple blood. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Ziye (Perillae Folium), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex), each at 1.5 qian. After one dose, add Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama), Zaojiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis), each at 2 qian; further doses lead to recovery. This condition presents with tight pulses in all six positions and alternating chills and fever.
Gate of Throat Abscess 4: Bright Red Throat Abscess.
Bright red throat abscess stems from accumulated heat in the Spleen and Lungs, appearing bright red with severe swelling, internal Guan pulse fullness, surging and large pulses in all six positions, accompanied by chills and fever. Urgently prick Shaoshang (LU11) and Shangyang (LI1) acupoints, or allow the affected area to bleed foul blood. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) each at 1 qian, Haifushi (Pumex), and Sheng Dahuang (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) each at 3 qian, Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex), Zaojiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) each at 3 qian, Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) each at 1.5 qian. Boil the first eleven ingredients for twenty to thirty boils, then add Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) and decoct together. Two doses stabilize the condition.
Gate of Throat Abscess 5: Hoarse Voice Throat Abscess.
Hoarse voice throat abscess results from severe cold invasion obstructing the Lung meridians, causing hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, and possibly ulcerated spots. The Right Cun pulse is deep and choppy, while the Spleen and Stomach pulses are surging and large, with cold in the back and fever in the body. Rinse with Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) at 2 qian, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and Ziye (Perillae Folium) each at 1 qian. After two days, when hoarseness subsides, substitute with Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) at 1 qian, Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina) at 5 fen, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Jiu Chao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix), Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama), and Zaojiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) each at 3 qian. Take Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder) and Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill); two doses cure the condition.
Gate of Throat Abscess 6: Single Throat Abscess.
Single throat abscess appears on either the left or right side, with fever in the body and cold in the back, indicating a Spleen-Stomach disorder. Presence of red dots indicates wind-heat; absence indicates wind-cold. Pulse presentation is as described previously. Rinse and swallow Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Ziye (Perillae Folium) and Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) each at 2 qian. On the following day, add Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex), Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix), and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) each at 1.5 qian; one dose cures the condition.
Gate of Throat Abscess 7: External Symptom Throat Abscess.
External symptom throat abscess develops above the Tiantu acupoint (CV22) under the jaw, with internal and external swelling hindering diet. Initially without phlegm or visible internal signs, this is a toxin-abscess caused by wind-toxin. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zaojiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama), Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) each at 2 qian, Honghua (Carthami Flos) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) each at 1 qian, and Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina) at 5 fen. Take three consecutive doses until resolution. If pus forms and fistula develops, use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Decoction for Complete Great Tonification) to conclude treatment.
Gate of Throat Abscess 8: Cheek-Hugging Throat Abscess.
Cheek-hugging throat abscess, also known as Xuan Yong (Hanging Abscess), develops below the cheek due to stagnant cold qi. Apply two moxa cones externally. Internally, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama), Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex), Zaojiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) each at 1 qian, Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) at 3 fen, Honghua (Carthami Flos) and Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina) each at 5 fen. Aim for resolution. Prick if pus forms; if a fistula develops, use Ginseng and Poria for internal support to achieve recovery. Do not neglect this condition.
Gate of Throat Abscess 9: Tongue Upper Abscess.
Tongue upper abscess forms in the center of the tongue, plum-sized, preventing speech, caused by heat entering the Pericardium collateral. The Left Cun pulse should be surging, large, and rapid, not fine and slow. Redness and swelling are treatable; blackness is untreatable. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) at 1 qian, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) each at 5 qian, Sheng Jun (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) at 4 qian, and Dinggancao (Genkwa Flos/Dianthus Crinitus? Note: Text says Di Ding, likely Dianthus or Gentiana, usually Dianthus here contextually or Gentiana, but standard is often Dianthus or Gentiana. Given "Di Ding", usually refers to Dianthus Crinitus or similar. Let's stick to text literal or standard equivalent. Actually Di Ding is often Dianthus. Wait, standard WHO term for Di Ding is Dianthi Herba. But sometimes Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix. I will use Dianthi Herba as per common usage for Di Ding in some contexts, or clarify. Actually, Di Ding is often Dianthus. Let's use Dianthi Herba.) at 3 qian. Externally apply Niuhuang Xiaosan Yao (Calculus Bovis Dissolving Powder); recovery is the goal.
Gate of Throat Abscess 10: Tongue Lower Abscess.
Tongue lower abscess arises from accumulated heat in the Spleen and Kidneys. The Jinjin and Yuye acupoints under the tongue connect to the Kidney meridian; this condition arises when water essence is depleted. Diagnosis involves a surging and rapid Left Chi pulse. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) each at 2 qian, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex) each at 1 qian, and Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) at 2 qian. Take two doses, then use Eighteen Divine Medicines to conclude treatment. Apply blowing powder as before.
Gate of Throat Abscess 11: Upper Abscess.
Upper abscess rises like a peach pit under the chin, preventing eating, caused by long-standing accumulation of toxic heat from roasting/frying in the Lungs. Use detoxifying agents added with Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) at 3 qian, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) at 5 fen, Didang (Dianthi Herba) and Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) each at 2 qian, Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Zaojiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) each at 1.5 qian, Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) each at 1 qian. Take seven to eight doses, plus Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) 5 fen daily, and apply blowing powder. Recovery may take two to three months.
Gate of Tongue 1: Wooden Tongue.
Wooden tongue results from accumulated heat in the Heart, Spleen, and Liver meridians, causing the tongue to become coarse, purple, and swollen, preventing speech. It is often caused by excessive consumption of roasted foods. Urgently pricking to release purple blood, applying blowing powder, and administering Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) combined with Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction) added with Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) each at 2 qian, Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) each at 3 qian, taken for two doses. If ineffective, add Sheng Jun (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) to purge toxins, then rinse mouth with Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) and spit out. Surging and large pulses at Left/Right Cun/Guan indicate excess syndrome, which is treatable; fine pulses in all six positions indicate deficiency syndrome, which is difficult to treat.
Gate of Tongue 2: White Swollen Tongue.
White swollen tongue results from internal accumulation of wind-cold, with string-tight pulses in all six positions, causing tongue swelling, hardness, and pain. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) at 3 fen, Ziye (Perillae Folium) at 1.5 qian, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) at 1 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) at 1.5 qian, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) each at 1 qian. If white coating with black spots is slippery, use Dan Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) each at 5 fen, decocted and taken. Externally, apply equal parts Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), Shexiang (Moschus), and Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) as powder to rub the affected area.
Gate of Tongue 3: Ulcerated Edge Tongue.
Ulcerated edge tongue results from unclear damp-heat in the Spleen meridian, causing aphthous ulcers with white spots on the edges of the enlarged tongue. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Xiao Shengdi (Small Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) at 2 qian, Huashi (Talcum) at 3 qian, Dan Zhuye (Lophatheri Graminis Folium) at 1 qian, Yiren (Coicis Semen) and Zhuling (Polyporus) each at 1.5 qian, Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen), and Gancao Shao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Tip) each at 1 qian. Take two doses; apply blowing powder externally. Swelling and ulceration inside lips and teeth are treated similarly.
Gate of Tongue 4: Red-Dotted Purple Tongue.
Red-dotted purple tongue is caused by extreme heat in the Heart and Spleen meridians. The entire mouth shows red-purple dots, becoming ulcerated and painful, possibly with red macules on the body. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Shu Shigao (Calcined Gypsum Fibrosum) at 1 liang, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) at 1.5 qian, Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) at 1 qian, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) at 2 qian, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) at 1 qian, Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) each at 1 qian. In severe cases, add Sheng Jun (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) at 3 qian. If pulses are not rapid, do not use this formula; apply blowing powder externally instead.
Gate of Tongue 5: Pure Purple Tongue.
Pure purple tongue results from using scallion and wine to induce sweating for cold damage, allowing wine toxicity to enter the Heart, turning the tongue entirely purple. Use Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) each at 1 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) at 2 qian, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) at 2 qian, and Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) at 1.5 qian. If irritability is present, add Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Danshi (Fermented Sojae Semen Praeparatum) each at 1 qian. For nausea and vomiting, fearing eruption of macules, separately use Yuanxu (Coriandri Fructus) at 1 liang. Also, crush Yuanxu in hot wine and rub the back, which is crucial. Apply blowing powder externally.
Gate of Tongue 6: Lotus Tongue.
Lotus tongue results from long-standing heat-toxin in the Spleen meridian. It grows inside the gum line, spreading like a lotus flower. Urgently prick the affected area to bleed, apply blowing powder, then prick the bilateral Shaoshang (LU11) acupoints. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) at 2 qian, Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caudex) and Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) each at 1 qian, Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) each at 1 qian, Sheng Jun (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) at 3 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) each at 1 qian, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) at 2 qian, Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama) at 1 qian, and Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) at 5 fen. Take two doses. If unresolved, use Eighteen Divine Medicines to conclude treatment.
Gate of Tongue 7: Double Tongue.
Double tongue features a small tongue growing beneath the large tongue, making the large tongue appear thick and short, while the small tongue causes prolonged pain. This is toxicity of the Heart and Spleen, indicated by surging and large pulses at the Left Cun and Right Guan positions. It will eventually ulcerate, making recovery difficult. Prick initially to release foul blood, apply blowing powder, and take Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction) added with Sheng Jun (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) at 5 qian. If diarrhea persists for five to six days, recovery occurs. Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) and Eighteen Divine Medicines are also acceptable.
Gate of Tongue 8: Lotus Tongue (Variant).
Lotus tongue (variant) results from flaming fire of the Heart and Lungs rising to the tongue base. Prick the small tongue to bleed, apply blowing powder, use Sanhuang Shigao Tang (Three-Yellow Gypsum Decoction) added with Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) at 5 fen and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) at 2 qian. Externally prick Shangyang (LI1) acupoint; recovery follows.
Gate of Tongue 9: Scorched Yellow Tongue.
Scorched yellow tongue results from excessive alcohol consumption triggered by cold, causing the large tongue to become dry and yellow. Use Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction) added with Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), and Renzhonghuang (Human Faeces Extract). For chills and fever, use Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) added with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) at 1.5 qian. For vomiting, irritability, and surging pulses, add Sheng Jun (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) at 4 qian, assisted by Niubang (Arctii Fructus), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Gange (Raw Puerariae Lobatae Radix). Response is invariably good.
Gate of Tongue 10: Pearl on Tongue.
Pearl on tongue results from accumulated heat in the Heart and Spleen, forming white blisters of varying sizes on the tongue, with surging and large pulses in all six positions. Apply blowing powder, use Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction) added with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) at 5 qian, Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) at 2 qian, and Didang (Dianthi Herba) at 1 qian. Also take Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) 5 fen. If pulses are slow and fine, do not use the previous medicines.
Gate of Tongue 11: Pearl Under Tongue.
Pearl under tongue results from dual deficiency of the Spleen and Kidneys. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Yan Chao Xuanshen (Salt-fried Scrophulariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Yan Chao Zhimu (Salt-fried Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) in equal parts. Decoct and take orally; apply blowing powder. Other medications follow previous instructions.
Gate of Tongue 12: Left Sparrow Tongue.
Left sparrow tongue results from accumulating toxicity in the Stomach due to excessive fried and roasted foods, appearing on the side of the tongue near the gums like a small tongue. Initially prick to bleed, apply blowing powder, and treat with Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) combined with Sanhuang Tang (Three-Yellow Decoction) and Liangge San (Cooling the Chest Powder). It will eventually ulcerate; use Longgu Shengji San (Dragon Bone Flesh-Regenerating Powder) to conclude treatment.
Gate of Tongue 13: Right Sparrow Tongue.
Right sparrow tongue also results from accumulated toxicity. Treatment is similar to Left Sparrow Tongue, with minor differences. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) combined with Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhino Horn and Rehmannia Decoction). Application of powder is the same as before.
Gate of Small Tongue 1: Stomach Fire Small Tongue.
Stomach fire small tongue results from long-standing stagnation of fire-toxin in the Spleen meridian, causing white spots and ulceration on the uvula, with floating and surging Stomach pulses. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) at 4 liang, Jiu Chao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix) at 2 qian, Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) at 3 qian, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) at 2 qian, and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) at 1 qian. Take two doses. If unresolved, apply blowing powder and take Baizhi Zhi (Cypress Branch Juice). This is caused by excessive consumption of roasted foods, strong wine, rich flavors, or fish bone injury, distinct from condensed toxin. Differentiate by pulse: floating and surging indicates Stomach fire; deep and solid indicates condensed toxin. Careful differentiation is essential.
Gate of Small Tongue 2: Stomach Toxicity Small Tongue.
Stomach toxicity small tongue results from toxin condensing in the Stomach meridian, appearing on the uvula similarly to the previous condition. Deep, solid, yet surging and large Stomach pulses indicate condensed toxin. Do not overlook this in clinical practice.
Gate of Small Tongue 3: Accumulated Heat Small Tongue.
Accumulated heat small tongue results from flaming fire-toxin in the Liver and Stomach meridians, causing the uvula to become long, hard, covered with white film, preventing swallowing, with a floating and large Right Guan pulse. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) at 1 qian, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) at 2 qian, Jiu Chao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix) at 2 qian, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) at 1.5 qian, Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) at 3 qian, Huashi (Talcum) at 2 qian, Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) each at 1 qian. Apply blowing powder externally and take Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) two or three times; recovery is assured.
Gate of Small Tongue 4: Pure White Small Tongue.
Pure white small tongue results from accumulated toxin in the Stomach meridian, causing the uvula to suddenly turn white, soft, large, swollen, and painful, with surging and deep Right Guan pulses. First use Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill), 7 fen per dose, for five to ten doses, then decoct Tufuling (Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma) to replace water. Subsequently, take twenty-one doses of Guangchuang Medicine (Syphilis Medicine) washed down with Yinhua Tang (Honeysuckle Decoction). If Stomach pulses are not deep but surging and large, treat as fire syndrome: use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) at 3 qian, Jiu Chao Huangqin (Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix) and Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen) each at 2 qian, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) at 1 qian, Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) at 1 qian, Huashi (Talcum) at 3 qian, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) at 3 qian, Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix) at 1.5 qian, and Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix) at 2 qian. Take three doses. This is a method of treating one syndrome in two ways; carefully analyze pulse principles before prescribing. Caution! Caution!
Gate of Small Tongue 5: Hanging Flag Small Tongue.
Hanging flag wind features a drooping uvula with a pointed tip, size of a longan seed, red as a cherry, caused by excessive consumption of rich flavors and strong wine leading to stagnant Stomach fire. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) at 5 fen, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) at 1 qian, Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) at 2 qian, and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) at 2 qian. Two doses cure it. If the swollen area bleeds, apply blowing powder; this corresponds to floating and surging Stomach pulses.
Miscellaneous Syndromes Gate 1: Pine Seed Throat Carbuncle.
Pine seed throat carbuncle forms on both sides of the uvula inside the gate, shaped like a pine seed, pale red and hard, causing severe pain and difficulty eating, with cold back, fever, and tight, full pulses at both Cun and Guan positions. This is wind-fire stagnation. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Ziye (Perillae Folium), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama), and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) each at 1 qian. Next day, remove Ziye and Qianghuo, add Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina) at 3 fen and Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) at 1 qian, finely ground and taken with liquid. Recovery in two days. Apply blowing powder externally.
Miscellaneous Syndromes Gate 2: Running Horse Gum Rot.
Running horse gum rot arises from severe accumulated heat-toxin in the Spleen meridian, starting with gum swelling and progressing to long-term ulceration. This is an emergency; tooth loss and black flesh are untreatable. Floating and surging pulses indicate survival; deep and fine pulses indicate death. Large and forceful pulses allow for heavy medication rescue; slow and fine pulses render medication ineffective. Diagnose carefully based on pulses. Initially, before ulceration, prick the swollen area to bleed and apply blowing powder. Once ulcerated, no need to prick; just apply blowing powder. Use Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu - *Note: Rhino horn is banned, but historically used. I will translate as Rhinocerotis Cornu*), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) each at 2 qian, Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix) each at 1.5 qian, Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) at 1 liang, and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) at 1 liang. Decoct in a large pot, take 3-4 bowls, for three consecutive doses. If pulses are rapid and constipation present, add Sheng Jun (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) at 1 liang for possible rescue; delay means untreatable.
Miscellaneous Syndromes Gate 3: Throat Single.
Throat single results from Liver fire stagnating and generating wind, forming at the upper part of the throat gate, hanging down with a large root and small head, red and severely painful. Prick both sides of the affected area to bleed, apply blowing powder, and rinse with one dose of Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction). Next day, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), and Caoheche (Sargentodoxae Caulis) each at 2 qian, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) each at 1 qian. Decoct and take; recovery follows.
Miscellaneous Syndromes Gate 4: Throat Mushroom.
Throat mushroom is caused by fetal toxin or Heart/Stomach fire pathogens, growing inside the throat like a fungus. Do not use knives or needles. Take Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction) and Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) to prevent fever, though complete resolution is rarely seen.
Miscellaneous Syndromes Gate 5: Throat Tumor.
Throat tumor results from anger injuring the Liver, shouting in the wind, constitutional deficiency, or rapid reading causing Qi and Blood coagulation, appearing intermittently inside the throat gate. Treat with herbs to regulate the root and nourish the origin. Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) and Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) can be taken regularly, but rapid recovery is unlikely. Apply blowing powder externally.
Miscellaneous Syndromes Gate 6: Another Throat Tumor.
Another throat tumor forms outside the throat gate, also named tumor. Treatment is the same as above. Illustrated separately due to different location.
Miscellaneous Syndromes Gate 7: Left Yin Sore.
Left Yin sore forms below the Jiache acupoint (ST6), with internal heat and external cold, unchanged skin color, chills and fever, and swelling resembling Molluscum Contagiosum (Eel Carp Plague). Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with Wanling Dan (Ten-Thousand Spirit Pill), dissolved together. If it turns red, treat with throat abscess medicine; add Sheng Jun (Raw Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma) at 3 qian for constipation. Yushu Dan (Jade Pivot Pill) is also acceptable. If the syndrome belongs to Shaoyin Heart/Kidney, this applies. If it belongs to Shaoyang Gallbladder/San Jiao, use Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Niubang (Arctii Fructus) with Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) for rinsing.
