According to the *Suwen* (Basic Questions): The eyes can see when nourished by blood; the ears can hear when nourished by blood; the fingers can grasp when nourished by blood; the palms can hold when nourished by blood; the feet can walk when nourished by blood; the Zang organs (Solid Organs) can produce fluids when nourished by blood; the Fu organs (Hollow Organs) can generate Qi when nourished by blood. Wherever blood flows, Qi also flows accordingly. When Qi and Blood circulate freely within, the Shen (Spirit/Mind) becomes clear and smooth, thereby enabling normal physiological functions. Therefore, the *Suwen* states: "Qi and Blood are the substance of human Shen; they must not be neglected in careful regulation and nursing."
Women are fundamentally based on Blood. Women's diseases primarily involve the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. The Small Intestine and Heart are exterior-interior paired meridians. This meridian originates below the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel), passes below the Zhongji point (CV3), ascends to the pubic hairline, follows the interior of the abdomen through Guanyuan (CV4), ascends to the throat and cheeks, crosses the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel), penetrates the umbilicus, and ends there. Because a woman's menstruation arrives monthly on schedule, it is called Yue Xin (Menstrual Trust/Menstruation). If menstruation does not occur, it is due to Wind-Heat pathogenic factors damaging the meridians and blood, causing blood stagnation internally. Alternatively, internal invasion by Evil Heat damages the Spleen and Stomach, impairing digestion. Since food cannot be transformed, Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi become stagnant and sluggish, leading to dry, yellowish skin and a lusterless complexion. Or, if the Large Intestine is deficient, it transforms into diarrhea, with pathogens flowing into the Guanyuan area, resulting in infertility. This is because the Zi Zang (Uterus) is deficient, cold, and damaged, leading to Dai Xia (Leukorrhea), which originates from within the Bao Gong (Womb).
The formation of Dai Xia varies according to different meridians, with distinct root and branch aspects, but its essence lies in Qi pathology. The disease manifests precisely at the region traversed by the Dai Mai, where discharge drips down continuously, hence the name Dai Xia. Regarding the distinction between red and white discharge, there is no substantial difference. Medical methods state: Dizziness, bitter taste in the mouth, dry tongue, throat discomfort, red urine, and constipation are all signs of Heat syndromes. Cases of white leukorrhea often present similarly; how could this be caused by Cold? The *Suwen* states: "When things reach an extreme of excess, they cause harm; only through control can balance be maintained." This means that when a pathological factor reaches an extreme, it may manifest characteristics of the element that controls it, as a mechanism to suppress the excess. Just as fire smelting gold turns to water when heat reaches its peak; or in the sixth month when heat is extreme, objects exude moisture and become wet, and wood flows with sap. Thus, Liver Heat causes tears, Heart Heat causes sweat, Spleen Heat causes saliva, Lung Heat causes nasal mucus, and Kidney Heat causes spit.
Common secular theories suggest that boiling hot soup until it overflows, or the steaming of heat within objects, generates fluids. Therefore, when Damp-Heat in the lower Ren Mai is severe, fluids overflow and leak out as leukorrhea. Seeing this, ordinary doctors treat white leukorrhea merely according to formulas, using acrid-hot medicines. Although this may seem correct, it leads to the accumulation of stagnant Heat, preventing free circulation, and exacerbates the old disease. Such errors have been passed down for a long time.
