Whenever external pathogenic factors enter the body, they must transmit from the meridians to the Zang-Fu organs. One must deduce the cause through pulse and symptom analysis and regulate according to the affected meridian to achieve optimal results. For instance, if Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang meridian) is in the Taiyin meridian, Si Ni Tang (Four Reversal Decoction) should be used; if in the Shaoyin meridian, Fuzi Mahuang Tang (Aconite and Ephedra Decoction) should be used; if in the Jueyin meridian, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) should be used. If the disease is in the Taiyang meridian, Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is still used; in the Yangming meridian, Yangwei Tang (Nourish Stomach Decoction); in the Shaoyang meridian, Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction). The same applies to Wind, Summerheat, and Dampness pathogens. For Wind, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is used; for Summerheat, Xiangru Yin (Elsholtzia Drink) or Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) are used; for Dampness, Lingzhu Tang (Poria and Atractylodes Decoction) or Shenshi Tang (Drain Dampness Decoction) are used. These can be selected according to symptoms from various sections without tedious citation.
Excessive joy injures the Heart, causing Qi dispersion; excessive anger injures the Liver, causing Qi agitation; sorrow injures the Lung, causing Qi gathering; overthinking injures the Spleen, causing Qi knotting; fear injures the Kidney, causing Qi sinking; shock injures the Gallbladder, causing Qi chaos. Once the organ Qi is depressed, phlegm and fluid retention gather and knot, leading to obstruction and blockage, resulting in fullness and oppression. Following the cycles of excess and deficiency among the organs, vomiting and diarrhea will inevitably occur, and treatment should proceed from the perspective of external causes.
This formula treats the seven emotions—joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, and shock—which become depressed and erupt, causing mutual restriction among the Five Zang organs, inversion of Yin and Yang, sudden chaotic changes, simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea, alternating cold and heat, dizziness, chest and abdominal fullness, and throat obstruction.
Banxia (Washed with hot water, 5 liang) Houpo (Processed with ginger juice) Guixin (Each 3 liang) Fuling Baishao (Each 4 liang) Zisuye Chenpi (Each 2 liang) Renshen (1 liang)
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 cups of water, 7 slices of fresh ginger, and 1 jujube. Decoct until reduced to 0.7 parts, strain, and take on an empty stomach.
This formula treats excessive worry and thought, which close the Qi mechanism of the Spleen and Lung, causing phlegm and fluid retention to accumulate and stagnate in the intestines and stomach. Qi becomes depressed in the Yin aspect, while cold coagulates in the Yang aspect, leading to inversion of Yin and Yang, simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea, cold limbs, dizziness, or recurrent fever. It also treats gastric cold in the elderly causing constipation, and morning sickness in pregnancy where food cannot be retained at all.
Huangshi (Quantity unbounded, tied inside a pig intestine, boiled in rice washing water, wine, and child's urine each one bowl, until half dry, then taken out, washed to remove odor, drained and weighed, 10 liang) Banxia (Washed with hot water to remove slipperiness, weighed, 5 liang) Bai Fuling Renshen (Each 1 liang) Shigao (1 fen, alternatively boiled together with Huangshi)
Grind the above into fine powder. Use natural juice of fresh ginger to mix with steamed wheat cake paste to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 50 to 100 pills per dose on an empty stomach, swallowed with rice gruel mixed with a little fresh ginger juice.
