These are all indications of this condition. One may take Xiaoxuming Tang (Minor Continuation Life Decoction) for two to three doses, and it will surely heal. It is also said: When cold pathogen invades the Three Yang meridians, the disease must be cold; adding Ginger Juice to Xiaoxuming Tang acts fastest. When summer-heat pathogen invades the Three Yin meridians, the disease must be hot; use Xiaoxuming Tang removing Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) and reducing Guixin (Cinnamon Bark) by half. For severe restlessness, Zixue (Purple Snow) is best. If Zixue is unavailable, decoct genuine Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and swallow the residue with cold water. (All formulas must be taken mixed equally with Siwu Tang [Four Substances Decoction].)
[From *Bao*] The ear, when referred to as an orifice, belongs to Water; when referred to to sound, it belongs to Metal; when referred to by meridians, both the Hand-Shaoyang and Foot-Shaoyang converge there. There are cases where one cannot hear due to internal dysfunction, which primarily concerns the Zang organs; there are cases where sound cannot enter due to external invasion, which primarily concerns the meridians. Some sounds resemble cicadas, some resemble bells, some resemble fire burning; each manifests according to its associated meridian. The deficiency and excess patterns therein must not fail to be examined. Suppose deafness is treated via the Lung? Why? Because the Lung governs sound, and nasal congestion is also a Lung issue. Why treat the Heart? Because the Heart governs smell. If we deduce from this method, it all stems from the origin of receiving Qi. The Kidney receives Qi at Si hour, the Heart at Hai hour, the Liver at Shen hour, the Lung at Yin hour, and the Spleen at the four seasons' end months. These treatment methods follow the Dao of growth.
[Luo] The Classics state: Those who lose Jing essence suffer from deafness. The Kidney is the Foot-Shaoyin meridian, storing Jing essence and connecting Qi to the ear. The ear is the gathering place of numerous vessels. If Jing and Qi are harmonious, the Kidneys are strong, and the ears can hear the five tones. If labor and injury damage Qi and Blood, combined with wind pathogen invasion, damaging the Kidneys and causing loss of Jing essence, deafness occurs. However, among the Five Zang and Six Fu organs and the Twelve Primary Meridians, there are collaterals connecting to the ear. When Yin and Yang meridian Qi merge, if they merge excessively, Zang Qi rebels, termed Jue (reversal). Jue Qi contends and enters the vessels of the ear, causing deafness. For Kidney disease causing Jing loss and deafness, the sign is black color on the cheeks and zygomatic arches; for Hand-Shaoyang meridian movement causing Qi reversal and deafness, the sign is a muffled sensation in the ears; for Hand-Taiyang meridian reversal causing deafness, the sign is deafness with a feeling of fullness in the ears. Shao Shen San (Burned Kidney Powder) should be used as the main treatment.
[From *Baoming Ji*] It says: The ear, referred to as an orifice, is Kidney Water. The Classics say: The Kidney governs the ear. The left Zang is the Kidney, the left orifice is the ear. It also says: Kidney Qi connects to the ear; when Kidney Qi is harmonious, the ears can hear the five tones. It also says: Loss of Jing essence causes deafness. Therefore, Luo Qianfu considers the sign of Jing loss causing deafness to be black color on the cheeks and zygomatic arches.
Shao Shen San treats deafness. (The formula in *Baojian* lacks Bajitian.)
Cishi (Magnetitum, 1 liang, calcined, quenched seven times in vinegar) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, 1 liang, processed, skin and umbilicus removed) Bajitian (Morindae Officinalis Radix, 1 liang) Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, 1 liang, remove eyes and closed-mouth ones, lightly stir-fry to remove moisture)
Grind the above into powder. For each dose, use one pig kidney, remove fascia, cut finely, add Congbai (Scallion White) and Jiubai (Leek White), each 1 qian, mix with 1 qian of the powder and a pinch of Yanhua (Salt Flower). Wrap in wet paper and bake in ash fire until cooked. Chew thoroughly on an empty stomach, wash down with thin porridge and wine. Effective within ten days. (*Yanyi* states: Cishi benefits Kidney Qi; use it for deafness caused by Kidney deficiency.)
[Yan] Congrong Wan (Cistanche Pill) treats Kidney deficiency deafness, or wind pathogen entering the meridians causing empty ringing in the ears.
Roucongrou (Cistanches Stem, soaked in wine, sliced, dried) Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus, pitted) Shilongrui (Lysimachiae Herba) Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, soaked in wine, steamed and dried) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, radix removed)
Lurong (Deer Antler without hair, steamed in wine and dried) Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, roots removed) Cishi (Magnetitum, calcined, quenched in vinegar, washed in water) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, processed, skin and umbilicus removed. Each 1 liang)
Quanxie (Full Scorpion, detoxified, 7 pieces) Shexiang (Moschus, 1 zi, added just before use)
Grind the above into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 100 pills each time on an empty stomach, washed down with salt wine or salt water.
[From *Shengji Zonglu*] Treats deafness due to Kidney Qi deficiency and damage. Use one deer kidney, remove fat membrane, cut into pieces, cook with soybean ferment juice and 2 he of glutinous rice into congee. Add five flavors (seasonings) appropriately. Eat on an empty stomach. Can be made into soup or wine.
[From *Bencao Gangmu*] Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) treats unclear hearing due to Kidney heat. (Formula see Wind-Heat section below.)
The above formula uses Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Cishi (Magnetitum) as sovereign herbs; it is a formula tonifying Kidney deficiency with heat.
[Li Dongyuan] In *Zangqi Fashi Lun*, it says: Lung deficiency leads to shortness of breath and inability to take deep breaths, deafness, and dry throat. The annotation says: The Lung's collaterals meet in the ear, hence deafness. This statement is incorrect. Generally, Qi deficiency leads to cold; excess leads to stagnation of Qi and Blood. The ear is the residence of Zong Qi (Gathering Qi); when Lung Qi does not flow, deafness results.
[Zhu Danxi] La Wan (Wax Pill) treats empty deafness.
Baifuling (Poria, 2 liang) Shanyao (Chinese Yam, stir-fried, 3 liang) Xingren (Apricot Seed, stir-fried, remove skin and tips, 1.5 liang)
Grind the above three ingredients into powder, mix evenly. Melt 1 liang of yellow wax and mix to form pills the size of bullet shots. Chew and wash down with salt water. Some people only chew yellow wax finely and wash down with good Jian tea; this is also effective. (Shanyao, Baifuling, and Xingren all enter the Taiyang channel. Shanyao greatly tonifies Yin Qi; only Xingren moves Qi, representing tonification with unblocking. For shortness of breath and dry throat, wash down with Maidong, Renshen, and Wuweizi decoction.)
The Classics state: Liver deficiency leads to blurred vision and inability to see, inability to hear, and fearfulness. Treatment uses Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), and Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) in equal parts. Decoct and drink for over twenty doses, then use Du Ren Jiangxie San (Du Ren Ginger and Scorpion Powder) to open the orifices.
The Materia Medica states: For Liver deficiency, ginger tonifies it; this is correct.
[Worldly Transmission] Treats deafness. Remove whiskers from Nine-Jie Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), cut into small pieces (10 liang). Mix with Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 10 liang). Soak in water in a clay jar for seven days. Remove Cangzhu, keep only Changpu. Dry it, steam it over glutinous rice in a steamer, dry again, and grind into powder. Mix with glutinous rice drink. Take after meals and before bed. Effective.
[Danxi] After severe illness, deafness requires Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to descend fire. For deafness caused by Yin deficiency and fire hyperactivity, the same applies. There are three types of Qi-reversal deafness, involving the Liver, Hand-Taiyang, and Hand-Shaoyang meridians. The Classics state: Liver Qi rebellion causes headache, deafness and dullness, and swollen cheeks. It also states: What the Taiyang calls "floating causes deafness" all relates to Qi. Luo Qianfu said: For Hand-Taiyang Qi reversal causing deafness, the sign is deafness with ear fullness. For Hand-Shaoyang Qi reversal causing deafness, the sign is muffled hearing in the ears. All these are Qi-reversal deafness. Treatment should use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) swallowed with Longhui Wan (Dragon Gallbladder Pill) to descend fire, and Fuyuan Tongqi San (Restoring Origin and Promoting Qi Circulation Powder) to regulate Qi.
[Danxi] Deafness must use Siwu Longhui Wan (Four Substances Dragon Gallbladder Pill) to nourish Yin.
Fuyuan Tongqi San (Restoring Origin and Promoting Qi Circulation Powder) treats Qi-stagnation deafness. (Formula see Abdominal Abscess section.)
[Danxi] For deafness with damp-phlegm, use Binglang Shenxiong Wan (Areca Nut and Xiong Formula Pill) to purge.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (Each 2 liang) Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen) Huashi (Talcum) (Each 4 liang) Add Binglang (Arecae Semen)
Make pills with water drops. Take 10 pills each time, increasing by 10 pills per dose, washed down with white water.
Deafness all belongs to Heat; Shaoyang and Jueyin have more heat. It is suitable to resolve phlegm and scatter wind-heat. Use Tongsheng San (Universal Salvation Powder) or Guntan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) and similar formulas. For deafness due to depression/stagnation, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to Tongsheng San, stir-fried in wine, then stir-fried three more times in wine, then add other herbs. Generally stir-fried in wine.
[Luo Qianfu] Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) treats wind-toxin congestion and heat, chest/heart phlegm stagnation, bilateral empty deafness, heavy head, dizzy eyes. Divine effect.
Xijiao (Rhinoceri Cornu, shaved) Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos) Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, radix removed) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried, pulp removed) Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) (Each half liang)
Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 liang, heart removed) Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian, roasted)
Grind the above into powder. Take 3 qian each time, decoct in water, take warm after meals.
Fushen San (Poria with Hostwood Powder) treats Upper Jiao wind-heat, sudden deafness and tinnitus, fullness and urgency in limbs, dizziness and obstruction.
Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 1 liang) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) Manjingzi (Viticis Folium) Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, radix removed) Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (Each half liang)
Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 fen, roasted) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang, heart removed) Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 3 qian)
Grind the above twelve ingredients into powder. Take 3 qian each time, add 3 slices of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to 0.5 portion, take warm after meals.
[From *Bencao Gangmu*] Treats a 20-year-old man whose right ear hears unclearly due to post-boil Kidney meridian heat. Whenever he feels frustrated internally, the hearing becomes heavier, with empty ringing and pain. Use Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction).
Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, 1.5 liang) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex, 1 liang) Cishi (Magnetitum, crushed, washed in water 30-20 times until red sweat is gone, 2 liang)
Gancao (Licorice Root) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (Each half liang)
Grind into coarse powder. Take 4 qian each time, decoct in water, remove dregs. Take 2-3 times daily, anytime.
[Zhu Zhenheng] Jiangxie San (Ginger and Scorpion Powder) treats deafness caused by Kidney deficiency, curable with one dose even if present for ten years. (From Du Ren's formula.)
Ganxie (Dried Scorpion, 49 pieces, remove cocoon, wash and dry, dispel wind-heat) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 49 slices the size of scorpions, resolve phlegm)
Stir-fry the above two ingredients in a silver or ceramic vessel until dry, grind into fine powder. Do not eat in the evening. At night, mix with wine as one dose. By the second watch (9-11 PM), drink slowly to capacity. By the fifth watch (3-5 AM), hear the sound of hundreds of sheng pipes playing, and hearing will return. (Another method: Drink a cup of strong scallion white decoction at the fifth watch. Take Heixi Dan (Black Tin Pill) two days prior. Effective. Another method: Stir-fry scorpions with half a sheng of glutinous rice first. Then place 49 ginger slices on top of scorpions and stir-fry together. Discard rice and ginger.)
[From *Qianjin Fang*] Treats deafness. Use 3 sheng of wine to soak 2 sheng of Mujingzi (Vitex fruit), crush them, soak for seven days, remove dregs. Drink freely until finished. Even if present for thirty years, it will heal.
[From *Suwen*] Southern Red Color enters and communicates with the Heart, opens into the Ear, and stores Essence in the Heart. (*Jinkui Zhenyan Lun*)
Treat Kidney deficiency cold with Weishen San (Roasted Kidney Powder) and Congrong Wan (Cistanche Pill). (See Deficiency-Excess section.)
There are four types of Luck-based (Yunqi) deafness:
First, Dampness pathogen damages Kidney and Triple Burner causing deafness. The Classics state: When Taiyin is in the fountain position, excessive dampness causes people to suffer from deafness, muffled hearing; treat with bitter-hot herbs.
Second, Dryness pathogen damages Liver causing deafness. The Classics state: When the year is excessive, Dryness Qi prevails, Liver Wood suffers evil, people suffer from deafness and inability to hear.
Third, Fire pathogen damages Lung causing deafness. The Classics state: When Year Fire is excessive, hot summer prevails, Lung Metal suffers evil, people suffer from deafness.
Fourth, Wind and Fire flare up disturbing the upper body causing deafness. The Classics state: When Shaoyang governs Heaven's policy, wind and heat distribute together, clouds and things boil, people suffer from deafness and blindness. During the third Qi period, hot summer arrives, people suffer from middle heat, deafness, and blindness; treat with cold agents.
[From *Bencao Gangmu*] Treats deafness. Use one rat gallbladder, drip into the ear three times. Immediate effect.
[From *Shengzhifang*] Treats deafness, immediate effect. Put dried Earthworm (Di Long) with salt into the tail of a green onion, extract the water, and drip into the ear.
[From *Qianjin Fang*] Treats deafness. Wrap Snake Grease in cotton and insert into the ear. Divine effect.
[Worldly Transmission] Treats long-standing deafness.
Jinci Shi (Compact Magnetite, bean-sized) Chanshanjia (Pangolin Scale, burned to retain character, ground into powder, 1 zi)
Wrap the above in new cotton, insert into the affected ear. Hold a little raw iron in the mouth. When a wind/rain sound is felt in the ear, it heals. Gancao (Licorice Root) and Gansui (Kansui Radix), each half cun, wrapped in cotton, inserted into the ear. Also chew Gancao root. Immediately unblocks. Wonderful.
[Luo Qianfu] Tongshen Dan (Spirit-Unblocking Pill) treats deafness.
awei (Ferulae Resina) Badouren (Crotonis Fructus Seed, 7 pieces) Anshixiang (Benzoin Resin) Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) (Each 1.5 qian) Zhusha (Cinnabar, 5 fen) Dasuan (Garlic) Bamazi Ren (Ricini Semen, 7 pieces)
Grind into fine powder. Mash the two seeds and garlic together into a paste, form pills the size of date pits. Use one pill each time, wrap in cotton, insert into ear. Remove if slight pain occurs.
[Worldly Transmission] Treats deafness unresponsive to long-term treatment.
One clove of garlic, dig a pit in one end. Place one peeled Croton seed (Badou) inside. Slowly roast to remove extreme heat. Insert into the garlic pit. Wrap tightly in new cotton and insert into the ear. Not more than three times needed for effect.
Treat deafness. Fifty Bamazi Ren (Ricini Semen), peeled. One date. Mash together into pills the size of date pits. Mix with infant breast milk. Use one pill each time, wrap in cotton, insert into ear. Stop when heat is felt. Change once daily.
[From *Qianjin Fang*] Treats deafness. Cut Gusuibu (Drynariae Rhizoma) into thin strips. Roast in fire and insert into ear while hot. (Materia Medica states: Gusuibu breaks blood and treats fractures with miraculous effect.)
[From *Waitai Miyao*] Treats deafness. Take seven Apricot Seeds (Xingren), remove skin, crush into three parts. Wrap in cotton. Place a salt grain the size of a small bean inside. Steam in a vessel placed in a rice steamer until rice is cooked. Remove. Have patient lie on side. Squeeze oil juice from one wrap into the ear. After a while, squeeze juice from the second wrap using the same method.
[Worldly Transmission] Another formula. Drop male cat urine into the ear. Left ear gets left drop, right ear gets right drop. If cat cannot urinate, rub its teeth with ginger to induce urination.
Acupuncture has five methods for deafness:
First, select Hand-Shaoyang, Foot-Shaoyang, and Hand-Yangming. The Classics state: For deafness, select the point where the nail meets the flesh on the fourth finger of the hand. Treat hand first, then foot. It also states: The Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao meridian, when moved, causes deafness and muffled hearing; adjust based on excess/deficiency, heat/cold, sinking/rising. It also states: Deafness without pain, select Foot-Shaoyang; deafness with pain, select Hand-Yangming. It also states: For deafness, needle Hand-Yangming. If ineffective, needle the meridian that emerges before the ear.
Second, select Hand-Yangming collateral. The Classics state: The collateral of Hand-Yangming is named Pianli, three cun from the wrist, diverging into Taiyin. Excess causes dental caries and deafness; select the divergent point. It also states: Evil invading Hand-Yangming collateral causes deafness and intermittent hearing loss. Needle one cun away from the tip of the nail on the second finger of the hand. Hearing returns immediately. If ineffective, needle the point where the nail meets the flesh on the middle finger. Hearing returns immediately. For those who do not hear intermittently, do not needle. Needle left side for right side symptoms, right for left.
Third, select Hand-Taiyang. The Classics state: Diseases generated by Hand-Taiyang meridian include deafness, yellow eyes, and swollen cheeks; adjust based on excess/deficiency, heat/cold, sinking/rising. It also states: For deafness with no hearing, select points in the ear.
Fourth, select Liver. The Classics state: Liver deficiency leads to blurred vision, inability to hear, and fearfulness. Select the meridians of Jueyin and Shaoyang. Qi rebellion causes headache, deafness and dullness, swollen cheeks. Select blood points.
Fifth, select Lung. The Classics state: Lung deficiency leads to shortness of breath, inability to take deep breaths, deafness, and dry throat. Select the blood points of Taiyin, outside Foot-Taiyang, inside Jueyin.
If there is pus in the ear, do not needle. The Classics state: Ear pain that cannot be needled indicates pus in the ear. If there is dry membrane or cerumen, the ear cannot hear.
[From *Zhu*] Treats deafness. Use a piece of Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), 7 fen long. Sharpen one end, flatten the other. Insert the sharp end into the ear. Place moxa cone the size of chopstick head on the flat end and moxa. Seven moxa cones for mild deafness, fourteen for severe. Effective if heat is felt in the ear.
[From *Yu*] Deafness, tinnitus, pain, itching, or stopped hearing: Tinghui (In the depression in front of the tragus, needle after holding a ruler in mouth, insert 0.5 cun, reduce eight inhalations) Yifeng (Insert 0.5 cun, reduce seven inhalations) Hegu Zusanli (Reduce)
[From *Zhai*] Another method: Yifeng (In the depression behind the ear, press to draw sensation into ear. Ask patient to bite 24 coins, lie on side, needle through mouth, ask patient to shake head with closed mouth, anger Qi exits from ear) Tinghui (Method as above.)
[Worldly Transmission] Another method: Zhongzhu Linqi.
[From *Jia Yi Jing*] Deafness, bilateral temporal pain, Zhongzhu governs. Ears muffled and unable to hear, Waiguan governs. Heavy head, chin pain, radiating to ear with mumbling noise, He governs. Deafness, ear feels like wind, Tinghui governs. Deafness, filled and unable to hear, mumbling like cicadas, Tinggong governs. Deafness, Yifeng and Huizhong lower void governs. Deafness, noisy and unable to hear, Tianrong governs. Deafness, ear blocked, Hegu governs. Deafness with no hearing, Tianchuang governs.
[From *Mai Jing*] If disease is deafness, but pulse is floating, large, and choppy, death ensues. (*Qianjin Yi* states: Large pulse indicates survival; sinking, reverse, and fine pulse indicates difficult treatment.)
When Shaoyang ends, there is deafness, all joints relax completely, and eye connections sever. (Full text see Diagnosing Death/Life.)
