Jia Yi Jing (The Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion)
Touwei (ST8), Xiaguan (ST7), Chengguang (BL7), Naohu (DU16), Qichong (ST30), Jizhong (DU6), Futu (ST32), Ruzhong (RN14), Diwuhui (GB29), Fengfu (DU16), Quanfu (likely a typo for Yongquan KI1 or similar, kept as original), Yanmen (DU15), Tianfu (LU3), Jingqu (LU8), Baihuan Shu (BL30), Jiutui (CV15), Yingxiang (LI2), Shimen (CV5 - forbidden for women), Sizhukong (TE23), Chengqi (ST1), Ermen (TE21), Renying (ST9), Yuan Mai (Yang Qiao Mai), Shaoshang (LU11), Chize (LU5).
The above thirty-two acupoints are all prohibited or unsuitable for moxibustion (This content is derived from the discussions of Zhen Quan and Yang Cao in *Qianjin Fang*, also found in Volume 3).
Whenever moxibustion is performed, there are distinctions between "raw" (light) and "cooked" (strong) heat, depending on the abundance or deficiency of the person's Qi and Blood, as well as their age. The elderly and frail should receive less moxibustion, while the young, vigorous, and robust should receive more.
When selecting acupoints, one must consider the size of the person's body, using the middle segment of the middle finger as one "cun". For men, use the left hand; for women, use the right hand. Another method states that the entire middle segment of the middle finger equals three cun.
Generally, for individuals over thirty years old, if they do not frequently moxa Zusanli (ST36), it will cause Qi to rebel upwards and vision to become dim, because Zusanli has the function of descending Qi. (From Volume 37)
The Yellow Emperor asked: Can moxibustion be performed during strong winds, heavy rain, extreme Yin conditions, or severe cold? If it cannot be performed, what are the benefits or harms? Qibo answered: Performing moxibustion during strong winds causes an intersection and disorder of Yin and Yang; during heavy rain, it impedes the flow of meridians and collaterals; during extreme Yin conditions, it causes Qi rebellion; during severe cold, it leads to stagnation and accumulation in the blood vessels. Moxibustion on these days will further agitate the disease and shorten life. "Strong wind" refers to the hour when the wind direction changes, and fire mugwort should not be applied. "Severe cold" refers to the early morning hours of mid-winter.
Generally, when a person first suddenly falls ill, it is difficult to initiate treatment. The Classics state: "When the pathogenic factor is at its peak, do not injure the healthy Qi." This describes the condition and signs of a newly acquired serious illness.
It is stated: These various methods are scattered throughout different sections and are difficult to trace individually. Therefore, they have been collected in one place for easy reference in urgent situations, saving time on searching and browsing.
It is stated: Regarding "Acupoint Indications," the acupoint names are listed above, and the symptoms below. One disease may correspond to multiple acupoints, or multiple diseases may share one acupoint. One must judge and decide the method of application according to the specific situation. Those requiring moxibustion should be moxed; those unsuitable for moxibustion should have their names noted in the annotations of the meridian acupoints. These are all good methods, but it is regrettable that few people in common practice know them.
(Note: This section comes from *Qianjin Fang*. The original text includes acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine combined treatments, hence called "good methods." Now that acupuncture is deleted and only moxibustion and herbs remain, the logic seems less smooth. It also says "noted in the meridian acupoint annotations regarding moxibustion," which seems erroneous, possibly meaning "noted their names.")
[Table of Annual Spirit Migration]
(Lists numbers from 1 to 90)
(Above represents the location of the Human Spirit; refer to other tables for examples.)
In the above nine regions, the Human Spirit moves to one region each year, cycling repeatedly. Moxibustion should not be performed on the inauspicious positions.
Heart, Throat, Head, Shoulder, Back, Waist, Abdomen, Neck, Foot, Knee, Genitals, Thigh.
(Lists numbers from 1 to 96 corresponding to the above body parts)
In the above twelve regions, where the Human Spirit resides, moxibustion and injury must be avoided. Be cautious.
