The mouth is traversed by the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, governed by the Spleen organ, and serves as the entry point for the five flavors. The tongue is the orifice of the Heart organ; when the tongue functions harmoniously, one can perceive the five flavors. Generally, after the five flavors enter the mouth, they are stored in the Spleen and Stomach organs, where they are transformed to generate Body Fluids (Jinye) to nourish the Qi of the Five Zang organs. The Qi of the Five Zang refers to the Qi of the Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney organs; if their regulation and dissemination are slightly impaired, causing an excess of Qi in certain Zang organs, various diseases arise. Furthermore, salty flavor is associated with Cold, sour flavor tends to stagnate, astringent flavor arises from Dryness, bland flavor stems from Deficiency, and heat conditions transform from bitter and sweet flavors. Halitosis (bad breath) occurs due to the differing foul odors of the Fu and Zang organs accumulating between the chest and diaphragm, generating heat that rushes up to the mouth. Mouth ulcers result from the stagnation of Spleen Qi combined with the invasion of Wind-Heat. The medical treatment method should address each condition according to its specific cause.
