*Yunlu Mancao* records: Yang Jilao from Huainan was a Confucian physician. A rich man's son suddenly suffered from an eye disease; he perceived straight objects as slanted. Objects such as tables, chairs, and book rests, which were arranged neatly, had to be moved by him until they were slanted for him to consider them straight. This applied even when writing letters. His parents were very worried and consulted several physicians, none of whom understood the ailment. Someone recommended Yang Jilao, so the father brought his son for treatment. After taking the pulse, Yang asked the father to return home first, keeping the son behind. He set up music and held a banquet, offering unlimited wine until the son was drunk. The patient was then placed in a sedan chair, carried by attendants, with his hands raised and lowered frequently to make him tilt, rolling back and forth for a long time, before being allowed to lie down on the bed. At dawn, after the alcohol wore off, he was sent home. The objects that appeared slanted the previous day now appeared straight. The parents jumped for joy and inquired about the treatment method. Yang Jilao said, "Your son has no other illness. While drunk, he once lay down and strained his liver, causing one lobe of the liver to rest upon the lungs and preventing it from descending. Thus, straight objects appeared slanted. Now, by getting him drunk again, the lungs become distended. During the rolling process, the liver also descended. How could medicine treat this?" The rich man rewarded him generously.
*Ji Lingshanfang Ji* records: In the late Yuan Dynasty, there was a man named Lu Fu from Siming, with the pseudonym Cangzhou Weng. He was deeply knowledgeable in medical arts. Xiao Yunquan, a Daoist priest from Linchuan, saw objects upside down and sought treatment from Lu Fu. When asked about the cause, Xiao said, "I once drank heavily, vomited all the wine I had consumed, slept soundly until morning, and then developed this illness." Lu Fu palpated his pulse and found the left Guan position floating and rapid. He immediately told him, "When you were severely drunk and vomiting, the upper jiao was repeatedly disturbed, causing the gallbladder to invert. Hence, you see objects upside down. This is an internal injury caused by neither external nor internal factors alone. The treatment should induce vomiting to correct the position of the gallbladder." Therefore, he used Veratrum nigrum (Lilu) and Melon stalk (Gua Di), ground into coarse powder, decocted in water, and administered in one dose at dawn, stopping when vomiting occurred. After vomiting, his vision returned to normal.
Zihe Zheng treated a young boy of over ten years old who suffered from red, tearful eyes. Other physicians were ineffective. Zihe Zheng observed and said, "This child's eye disease originated from fright experienced in the womb." The father replied, "During pregnancy, we were in Linqing during a military conflict, and I was frightened." Zihe Zheng prescribed Gualisan (Melon Stalk Powder) with Curcuma aromatica (Yujin). Through emesis and purgation, several sheng of phlegm-saliva were expelled. People laughed, saying, "The child has no illness in the abdomen; why induce such severe vomiting and purging?" By the next day, his eyes were clear and bright.
*Daoshan Qinghua* records: Zhang Ziyanshaoqing often experienced flashing lights in his eyes, appearing like white-clad figures resembling Buddha statues. Zhang Ziyan believed this intensely, abstaining from meat and alcohol. However, he became emaciated and ill. One day, he sought a pulse diagnosis from Wang Shouqing. Wang Shouqing was greatly alarmed upon seeing him, said nothing, but gave him dozens of large pills and over a thousand small pills. He instructed, "Take these within ten days, then report back." As promised, Zhang reported that the white figure turned yellow, and the light disappeared. He then craved meat and alcohol. The next day, the yellow color also vanished, and he felt different from usual. He visited Wang Shouqing to report this. Wang Shouqing said, "I knew this would happen. Your spleen was initially diseased and overcome by the lungs. The heart is the mother of the spleen. Since you were prone to suspicion, your heart qi was unstable, leading to hallucinations. I used large pills to tonify the spleen and small pills to nourish the heart. The lung is the child of the spleen; since it cannot overcome its mother, the illness will heal naturally."
*Beimeng Suoyan* records: A young man suffered from dizziness and blurred vision, often seeing a mirror. Zhao Qing diagnosed him and said, "Tomorrow morning, I will serve you fish paste (Yu Zha)." Upon arrival, he kept the young man hungry for a long time in an inner room until guests departed. Then, a bowl of mustard vinegar was placed on the table, with no other food. The young man, extremely hungry, smelled the mustard vinegar and drank it directly, then drank it again shortly after. He felt a sudden relief in his chest, and the mirror image disappeared. Zhao Qing said, "You have eaten too much fish paste, which causes discomfort without mustard vinegar. Fish scales stuck in the chest cause blurred vision. Thus, I deceived you to cure the symptom."
Danxi treated an elderly man who suddenly lost his vision. He had no other discomforts, and his daily activities and diet remained normal. This was a case of severe deficiency. Danxi urgently prepared two jin of Ginseng Paste. After two days of consumption, the patient's vision recovered. Another physician prescribed Qingmengshi (Green Conglomerate Stone) medicine. Zhu Danxi said, "He will die tonight." Unaware that the disease resulted from severe qi deficiency, using Qingmengshi instead of treating the deficiency would surely lead to death before nightfall. Indeed, the patient died at midnight.
A young man woke up early and suddenly could not see. After sleeping for a while, he could see slightly but unclearly. His appetite decreased significantly, and he felt very tired. His pulse was slow, large, and scattered when pressed heavily, indicating dampness. Inquiry revealed he had slept on damp ground for half a month. Treatment used Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu), Atractylodes lancea (Cangzhu), Poria (Fuling), Astragalus membranaceus (Huangqi), and Citrus reticulata (Chenpi), with a small amount of Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi). After twenty doses, he recovered.
Wang Shishan treated a woman over forty years old who suffered from dim vision, cough, headache, and tinnitus, worsening with hunger. Other doctors used ophthalmic medicines, which aggravated the condition. Her pulses were fine and weak, especially the Spleen pulse, indicating Spleen deficiency. The essence of the five zang and six fu organs is derived from the Spleen and ascends to the eyes. Spleen deficiency fails to transport the essence of the organs to illuminate the eyes, causing dim vision, head buzzing, and headaches. Spleen deficiency leads to Lung metal losing nourishment, resulting in cough. Instead of tonifying the Spleen and nourishing blood, the doctor wrongly used bitter-cold medicines for the eyes, treating the branch rather than the root. Treatment used Ginseng (Renshen) and Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu), each 1 qian 5 fen; Ophiopogon japonicus (Maidong) and Fritillaria cirrhosa (Beimu), each 1 qian; Angelica sinensis (Danggui) 8 fen; Citrus reticulata (Chenpi) and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), each 7 fen; Cimicifuga foetida (Shengma) and Bupleurum chinense (Chaihu), and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gancao), each 5 fen. She recovered.
Xue Lizhai treated a man whose eyes felt tight and dry in the late afternoon. Taking Phellodendron amurense (Huangbai) and Anemarrhena asphodeloides (Zhimu) worsened the condition, accompanied by bloody stools. This was due to Spleen injury failing to control blood and transport nutrients to the eyes. Treatment used Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) taken with Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). She recovered.
Official Zhang Yugong suffered from red, unclear eyes. After taking wind-dispelling and heat-clearing formulas, he became photophobic and deaf. His pulse was large and deficient. This was caused by excessive mental labor and worry injuring the Spleen. Mental labor prevents blood generation; Spleen injury prevents transport, leading to essence deterioration in the eyes. Treatment used Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Polygalae Radix (Fushen), Ziziphus jujuba seed (Suanzaoren), Dioscorea opposita (Shanyao), Cornus officinalis (Shanzhuyu), and Schisandra chinensis (Wuweizi). She recovered. Later, due to improper self-care, the illness recurred more severely. Treatment used Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction) with the previous herbs, leading to recovery.
Wang Haizang treated a fat girl nearing adulthood who suffered from eye diseases recurring every one or two months, with redness and swelling. After three years of taking wind-heat dispelling medicines, her left eye developed a stubborn nebula starting from the inner canthus covering the pupil, and her right eye developed a nebula growing from bottom to top. Jiegu said, "Movement from outside to inside involves the Shaoyang channel; movement from bottom to top involves the Yangming channel." This indicated stagnation in both Shaoyang and Yangming channels. The six pulses were short, slippery, and solid, but short and rough when lightly palpated. Treatment used Wenbai Wan (Warm White Pill), reducing Chuanxiong and Fuzi by two-thirds, doubling Longdancao (Gentiana scabra) and Huanglian (Coptis chinensis) for purgation. Taken according to Dongyuan's method for Pi Ji Wan: start with two pills, increasing by one daily. If bowel movements are smooth, decrease by one daily, then restart from two. Suddenly, she passed black blood clods, hard like black beans. Gradually, she recovered, and the nebulae disappeared.
Yningsheng treated a person who overconsumed vinegar-garlic pork pancakes and then drank heavily, sleeping on a warm kang. The next day, his pupils dilated, vision was unstable (seeing small as large, large as small), and he stumbled. Various treatments failed. I said, "Pupil dilation is due to excessive intake of pungent and hot foods. Pungency disperses, and heat aids fire. Pungent-heat invading the brain causes the eyes to scatter, leading to unfocused vision." Treatment used Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin) and Coptis chinensis (Huanglian) as sovereign cold medicines; Angelica sinensis (Danggui) and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) as minister sweet-pungent medicines; Schisandra chinensis (Wuweizi) as assistant sour medicine; Ginseng (Renshen), Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gancao), Asparagus cochinchinensis (Tiangdong), and Lycium barbarum root bark (Digupi) as envoy medicines; Bupleurum chinense (Chaihu) as a guide to the Liver orifice. After a hundred doses, he recovered.
A woman had a green nebula growing from bottom to top, originating from the Yangming channel. Green is not a primary color, suggesting a combined pathology of Lung and Kidney, similar to mixing black and white in painting. Treatment used medicines to drain the Lung and Kidney, guided by Yangming channel herbs.
Emperor Gaozong of Tang often suffered from heavy head and blindness. He summoned attending physician Qin Minghe, who requested acupuncture to bleed the head for cure. The Empress Dowager did not want the Emperor cured and angrily said, "This deserves execution; how dare you bleed the Son of Heaven!" The Emperor said, "Just do it; it may not be bad." Two acupoints were needled. The Emperor said, "My eyes seem clear." He later raised his hand to his forehead, saying, "It is heaven's gift." He personally bestowed a hundred bolts of silk on Minghe.
Zhao Junyu of Anqing suffered from sudden red, swollen eyes unresponsive to drops and washes. Recalling Dairen's saying, "Illnesses in the upper body should be treated with emesis," he used Chao Tiao San (Tea Regulation Powder) to induce vomiting. One episode of vomiting cured the eye disease. Junyu sighed, "The efficacy of this method is so swift. I realize methods are close to people; people distance themselves from methods."
Sun Simiao, during the reign of Emperor Renzong, treated Concubine Wei for eye pain. Other physicians failed, using either cooling or tonifying medicines, causing organ disharmony. The Emperor summoned Sun. Sun said, "I am not an eye specialist; please do not hold me fully responsible. Issue a decree stating merit without fault." Sun palpated the pulse, finding the Liver pulse wiry and slippery, not obstructive heat. It was due to the concubine's youth, strong constitution, and abundant blood, where Liver blood was not circulating. Asking palace maids, they confirmed amenorrhea for two months. Treatment used menstruation-promoting medicines. Once menstruation resumed, the illness healed quickly. The Emperor awarded Sun three hundred thousand strings of cash. Palace rumor went: "If the divine doctor does not come, double eyes are hard to open."
Scholar Xu recorded: Xun Muzhong once told me, "Someone sees one object as two. Physicians attributed it to excess Liver qi, prescribing Liver-draining medicines without effect. What is this disease?" I said, "Sun Simiao stated: *Ling Shu* says, 'The visual system connects to the brain above and emerges from the neck below.' Pathogenic factors strike the head and eyes, exploiting visual deficiency. Deep invasion follows the visual system into the brain. Brain rotation tightens the visual system, causing dizziness and rotation. Pathogens striking the essence cause misalignment, scattering essence. Scattered essence causes diplopia, seeing two objects." Prescribing wind-dispelling medicines entering the brain cured him.
Monk Zhu Danxia, having taken vows for Emperor Zongzong, suffered from accumulated heat in the Three Yang channels. He lived in a quiet room, avoiding light, which caused piercing headaches. Placing water on his head did not relieve the heat. Many physicians could not diagnose. After seven days of treatment, he recovered. The method used only sweating, vomiting, and purging, followed by cooling sedatives, restoring normalcy.
A fourteen-year-old girl, due to anger, first experienced amenorrhea, alternating chills and fever, and hypochondriac pain. Later, green nebulae grew from outside to inside in both eyes. I reasoned that chills, fever, and hypochondriac pain are symptoms of the Foot-Jueyin Liver channel. Nebulae starting from the outside indicate Wind syndrome of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel. The left Guan pulse was wiry, rapid, and rough upon pressure, indicating Liver wind-heat with blood stasis. Treatment used Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) with Saposhnikovia divaricata (Fangfeng) and Gentiana scabra (Longdancao). After four doses, chills, fever, and pain subsided. Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill) was used, and the nebulae disappeared after a month.
A woman suffered from hemiplegic headache for five to seven years, with constipation, red swollen eyes, and dizziness. She had tried all headache medicines and undergone thousands of acupuncture and moxibustion sessions on her head. Dairen palpated her pulse, finding it rapid, numerous, and forceful, indicating severe wind-heat. This temple pain belongs to the Triple Burner Minister Fire channel, affected by Yangming Dry Metal dominance. Dry Metal overcoming Liver causes Liver qi stagnation, leading to Qi and Blood obstruction, blocking upper and lower flow, causing internal dryness and eventual blindness. Treatment used Dachengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction), decocted in river water with two liang of Rhubarb and one liang of Mirabilite. Taken in three divided doses, it caused over twenty watery stools. Subsequently, Qixuan Wan and Shengong Wan were taken to moisten, along with Malva verticillata leaves, Hibiscus esculentus, and pig/sheep blood to lubricate. Within three doses, vision cleared, the head felt light, dryness resolved, and she recovered.
Lou Quanshan treated a man who suffered from pain connecting the eyeball to the supraorbital ridge every night, with half-head swelling and pain. Cooling ointments like Huanglian Gao increased pain. Other medicines failed. Acupuncture at Jueyin and Shaoyin points stopped the pain temporarily. It recurred after half a month. After a month, treatment used Prunella vulgaris (Xiakucao) and Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), each two liang, and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gancao) four qian, ground into powder. Taken with tea after meals, one qian 5 fen per dose, pain halved upon swallowing. Recovered in seven days.
Zihe Zheng once suffered from eye disease himself, with swelling, redness, photophobia, and itching for over a hundred days. Ophthalmologist Zhang Zhongan suggested needling Shangxing, Baihui, Cuanzhu, and Sizhukong to bleed, and inserting grass stems into nostrils to bleed about one sheng. The next day, he improved significantly, recovering fully in three days. This is the method of breaking blood stasis when blood is excessive.
Yuxi recorded: Formerly, Cui Chengyuan, while an official, treated a death-row prisoner. The prisoner survived prolonged illness and was released. Years later, the prisoner suffered from eye disease, cured by medicine, and died of another ailment. One day, Cui suddenly developed cataracts, suffering immensely and losing sight for over a year. Sighing, he learned from the former prisoner's family about Huanglian Yanggan Wan (Coptis and Sheep Liver Pill). Cui prepared and took it. Within months, his sight restored, and the formula spread.
Fan Ning of Jin suffered from eye pain and sought a prescription from Zhang Zhan. Zhang joked, "An ancient formula from Song Yangzi was passed to Lu Dongmen Bo, then to Zuo Qiuming, and transmitted through generations to Du Zixia of Han and Zuo Taichong of Jin. All these sages had eye diseases and used this formula: Reduce reading one, reduce thinking two, focus inward three, simplify outward observation four, rise early sleep late five, sleep early at night six. Pillify these six substances, roast with divine fire, store in the chest for seven days, then place in the square inch (heart/mind). Practice for a moment: near vision can count eyelashes, far vision can see beyond a staff. Long-term use not only clears eyes but extends life. If truly practiced, it is not mockery but a miraculous formula."
