Li Dongyuan said: When the primordial Qi (Vital Energy) in the stomach is abundant, one can eat without injury and will not feel hungry even after the meal time has passed. If both the Spleen and Stomach functions are vigorous, one can eat and become robust; if both the Spleen and Stomach functions are deficient, one cannot eat and becomes emaciated, or eats little yet becomes obese, though with weak limbs that cannot be lifted. This is because the Spleen is full while pathogenic factors are excessive. There are also those who eat well but remain thin; this is due to latent Fire Evil (Pathogenic Heat) hiding in the Qi level of the Stomach, allowing for good appetite, but Spleen deficiency causes muscle wasting, which is a form of dietary injury.
Generally, when food intake is poor, treatments using herbs for regulating the Spleen and Stomach often fail. There is another explanation. Human life requires proper nurturing; if one fails to do so, such as through excessive sexual activity, the True Yang (Primordial Yang) declines, the Kidney Fire (Kan Fire) loses its warmth, and it cannot steam and warm the Spleen Earth upwards. The harmonious Qi fails to distribute, and the Middle Jiao (Central Pivot) fails to transport, leading to reduced appetite, chest and diaphragm stuffiness, bloating even without eating, indigestion after eating, and loose stools. All these result from the weakness of True Fire failing to steam and nourish the Spleen Earth. Ancients said, "Tonifying the Kidney is better than tonifying the Spleen," but I argue that "Tonifying the Spleen is better than tonifying the Kidney." If Kidney Qi is strong, the Fire of the Dantian can steam the Spleen Earth; once the Spleen Earth is warm, the Middle Jiao self-regulates, and normal diet resumes. Currently, low food intake and difficulty in digestion belong to Deficiency-Cold of the Spleen and Stomach. Since the Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth, this is caused by the deficiency of Mingmen Fire (Gate of Life Fire) failing to generate Earth. It is inappropriate to directly tonify the Spleen and Stomach; instead, one should take Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia Root) to tonify Fire to generate Earth. (Formula see Tonification Section).
Food refers to grains, meats, vegetables, and fruits. The Classics state: "The generation of Yin essence originates from the Five Flavors; the injury to the Five Zang Organs also stems from the Five Flavors." Regarding grains, meats, vegetables, and fruits, if one craves them, the mind must exercise restraint and avoid excess, thus preventing injury to healthy Qi. If dietary injury occurs, one must first inquire into the cause: Was it due to overeating favorite foods? Eating hastily due to hunger? Forcing oneself to eat due to others' persuasion? Or mistakenly eating forbidden foods after illness? If caused by craving, one should first harmonize Stomach Qi. If Stomach Qi was originally strong, reducing food intake allows self-healing; no need to take Qi-consuming digestive herbs. If caused by hunger, one should first benefit Stomach Qi; once strong, the injured food digests naturally. Xiangsha Yangwei Tang (Aucklandia and Amomum Decoction for Nourishing the Stomach) is indicated. If caused by forced eating, use Qi-moving and digestive agents; Baixiao Wan (Hundred Elimination Pill) is indicated. If caused post-illness, focus on tonification and nourishment; Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is indicated.
Injured foods differ in Cold and Heat; injured persons differ in strength. Thus, treatment methods vary. "Hot foods" refer to rich, fatty, spicy, and strong-flavored items, common in grains and meats. "Cold foods" refer to fruits, melons, peaches, and raw/cold items, common in vegetables and fruits. Treat Heat with Cold herbs, such as Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome) and Qianniu (Morning Glory Seed); treat Cold with Hot herbs, such as Dingxiang (Clove) and Badou (Croton Seed). Using Hot to attack Heat or Cold to attack Cold removes the food but leaves drug toxicity, severely injuring Stomach Qi, bringing immediate disaster. Therefore, for heat injury, use Sanhuang Zhizhu Wan (Three Yellows and Immature Bitter Orange Pill); if severe, use Liqi Wan (Qi-Regulating Pill) to purge. For cold injury, use Xiangsha Yangwei Tang; if severe, use Wan Yi Wan (Ten Thousand Billion Pill) to unblock. For mixed cold and heat, Beiji Dan (Emergency Pill) is indicated.
People know diet nourishes life but fail to realize that dietary imbalance harms life. Therefore, moderation and appropriateness are key. Wise individuals prevent disease before it arises. Diet should always be warm, regardless of season. In summer, Yin hides internally, making warm food especially suitable. Do not force overeating; overeating relaxes sinews and vessels, potentially causing hemorrhoids. Drinking heavily immediately after leads to sudden Qi rebellion. One should not lie down immediately after eating nor sit still all day, as this congeals Qi and Blood, shortening lifespan. After meals, rub the abdomen hundreds of times, exhale slowly hundreds of times, and walk slowly hundreds of steps—this aids digestion. Lying down after eating causes Lung Qi deficiency, Head Wind, and Chest Bi due to blocked Ying and Wei (Defensive and Nutritive) Qi and stagnant Blood. Walking after eating is beneficial. As the saying goes, "Flowing water does not rot, a door hinge does not get worm-eaten," because they move. Do not run fast, ride horses, climb high, or cross dangerous terrain after a full meal, lest agitated Qi injure the Zang-Fu organs. Avoid night eating. The Spleen likes sound; hearing sound stimulates peristalsis. After sunset, silence prevails, and the Spleen stops grinding food, leading to indigestion, Stomach injury, regurgitation, and inability to receive Grain Qi. If one then sits or lies naked fanning themselves, pores open, allowing Wind Evil to invade, causing limb paralysis. Do not eat when extremely hungry, nor overeat; do not drink when extremely thirsty, nor overdrink. Overeating causes accumulation; overdinking creates Phlegm-Pi (masses). Thus, "Do not drink heavily when extremely thirsty, do not eat heavily when extremely hungry," lest Qi and Blood become disordered and death occur suddenly. Starving people dying after a full meal proves this. Alas! Those skilled in health cultivation nurture the interior; those unskilled nurture the exterior. Those who nurture the interior calm the Zang-Fu, regulate blood vessels, ensure smooth Qi flow, and prevent disease. Those who nurture the exterior indulge taste buds, seek delicious flavors, and exhaust medicinal diets. Though their bodies may be plump and complexions radiant, harsh energies erode the Zang-Fu internally, depleting Spirit. How can they maintain Taihe (Great Harmony) and reach old age? Zhuangzi said, "What is fearful in humans is within the realm of bedding and diet, yet they fail to guard against it. This is the error." Is this not what he meant?
