《惠眼观证》论小儿惊候∶急惊者,本内有风热,面色红赤。又因乳母不自调摄,酒食过度;或涌乳饮儿;
[Manifestation of Jing Disease] Total Nine Sections
*Chubing Yuanshou Lun* (Source Book of Diseases) on the syndrome of Jing: The manifestation of Jing in children arises from disharmony of blood and qi, with heat and excess internally, leading to an unsettled heart spirit. When Jing is severe, it causes twitching and contraction, transforming into epilepsy (Xian). Additionally, during the "Bianzheng" (physiological developmental changes in infants), children may experience slight Jing; this is also due to the influence of heat. However, slight manifestations of Jing are necessary to nourish the blood vessels; severe Jing should be avoided. If severe Jing occurs, moxibustion on the "Jing Mai" (Shock Meridian) is indicated. Moxibustion performed at 50 or 60 days after birth may exacerbate the condition. It is beneficial to perform moxibustion on the Jing Mai only after 100 days of life.
*Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun* (Discussion on Infant Forms and Syndromes) on the transmission of Jing among the Five Zang Organs: First, Liver Jing Wind causes the child's eyes to roll upward abnormally and hands and feet to become cold. Second, Kidney Jing Wind causes teeth grinding and a red complexion. Third, Spleen Jing Wind causes night crying and excessive daytime sleepiness. Fourth, Heart Jing Wind causes internal heart heat and cold extremities. Fifth, Lung Jing Wind causes heat in the mouth, panting, and faint breathing. The Jing evil of the five Zang organs all results from the transmission of Jing Wind. Initially, there is phlegm-drool associated with Jing; if this phlegm remains stagnant above the diaphragm without dispersing, it surges into the zang-fu organs, triggering Jing evil. If untreated for a long time, the pathogenic factor transmits to the Heart and Lungs, or to the Liver, Spleen, and Kidneys. However, shamans often attribute this to demonic curses, and seeking divine intervention deepens the severity, potentially causing the child's death. Although numerous famous prescriptions exist, one must understand the disease source. The transmission to the five Zang organs is detailed below.
One, Jing evil entering the Spleen: Zheng Chongxu states that this causes abnormal spitting up of milk, vomiting and regurgitation, and refusal to nurse, thus forming Slow Jing Wind. Two, Jing evil entering the Heart: Zhou Qi states that this causes abnormal facial redness, aversion to crying/shouting, and slow limb movements, thus forming Slow Jing Wind. Three, Jing evil entering the Liver: Zheng Chongxu states that this causes eyes rolling upward, excessive whites of the eyes, eyeballs protruding upward, and craving for water, thus forming Jing Epilepsy. Four, Jing evil entering the Kidney: Ms. Zhao states that this causes sudden blackening of the face, aversion to shouting, and biting behavior, thus forming Jing Crying. Five, Jing evil entering the Lung: Cui Shi states that this causes nocturnal spontaneous sweating, delirious speech and shouting, or progression to diarrhea, constituting Deficient Jing.
*Huiyan Guanzheng* (Observing Signs with the Wise Eye) discusses infant Jing syndromes: Acute Jing Wind originates from internal Wind-Heat, presenting with a red face. It may also result from the nursing mother's lack of self-care, such as excessive alcohol and food intake; forceful lactation feeding; stagnation of phlegm in the diaphragm; or external Wind invading the body. Symptoms include high fever throughout the body, eyes rolling upward, spasms and convulsions of the four limbs, and locked jaw. Fetal Jing occurs when the mother experiences fright during the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy, allowing the fetus to absorb pathogenic factors which transmit to the Heart. Upon manifestation, it presents with high fever, vomiting of saliva, and eyes rolling open. This syndrome typically manifests half a month to one month after birth. Slow Jing Wind occurs when both Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are affected by pathogens, resulting in a pale complexion, chronic coldness of the zang-fu organs, or resulting from vomiting, diarrhea, or fright/falling incidents.
*Huiyan Guanzheng* discusses inherent Jing signs in infants: Excessive daytime sleep and generalized sweating indicate Jing Qi entering the Spleen; fine and rapid breathing indicates Jing Qi transmitting to the Lungs;无故 biting the nipple indicates Jing Qi transmitting to the Kidneys; sudden upward eye deviation indicates Jing Qi in the Spleen; frequent teeth grinding in dreams indicates Jing Qi in the bones; night crying until dawn indicates Jing Qi transmitting to the Heart; abnormal facial redness indicates Jing Qi in the Heart; panting and drinking water indicates Jing Qi in the Liver; aversive crying and shouting indicates Jing Qi in the Kidneys; heat in the anterior/posterior chest and four limbs indicates Jing Qi transmitting to the Spleen, accompanied by impending vomiting and diarrhea.
In cases of infant Jing Wind, the following signs are critical contraindications for medication: cyanotic/black nails, expulsion of white worms mixed with blood, and crying during diarrhea without tears. Also, fixed staring eyes, eyes half-open/half-closed, biting behavior accompanied by crow-like sounds, are conditions where medication should not be used.
*Yingtong Baojian* (Precious Mirror for Infants and Children) discusses fatal signs of Jing Epilepsy: Flaccid neck muscles, gaping anus (Yu Kou), coarse respiration with a sawing sound in the throat, inability to hold the head upright, ruddy complexion resembling makeup, sunken eyes lacking luster, biting clothes and people, eyes partially open/closed, bloody stool resembling clotted blood, and a body so soft it seems devoid of sinews and bones.
