[Zeng Shirong] When heat is extreme and complicated by wind, it causes redness and swelling of the eyes, inability to open them day or night, and incessant crying from fright. First, administer Jiuxian San (Nine Immortals Powder) decocted with water, ginger, and scallion. Then, administer Sandjie San (Three Dispersing Powder) mixed with warm rice wash water, and apply Huanglian Gao (Coptis Ointment) to the eyes. If it is a sudden redness and swelling caused by epidemic pathogens, causing severe suffering day and night, which may lead to visual obscuration over time, the treatment method is first to use Jiuxian San to release the exterior, then use Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) removed, plus Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), and Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), decocted in water. Simultaneously, administer Caolongdan San (Gentian Powder) and apply Huanglian Gao, as well as paste Qingliang Gao (Cooling Ointment). In children whose stomach qi is inherently deficient but spleen qi is excessive (indicating excess heat in the Spleen channel), presenting with red and swollen eyelids, photophobia, and inability to open the eyes, if bitter-cold medicines are suddenly used to reduce redness and swelling, it will instead damage the Spleen and Stomach, leading to vomiting or diarrhea, or slightly cold limbs. If warm medicines are then used to regulate, the eye disease will worsen. In such cases, first use Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) decocted with water, ginger, and Jiaxincao (Centelli Herba), then administer Xiehuang San (Drain Yellow Powder) for self-healing. For those with long-standing accumulation of heat in the Heart and Spleen, and Liver affected by pathogenic heat, resulting in photophobia, swollen eyelids with a slight purple hue, constipation or normal bowel movements, and dysuria or normal urination, first use Baijie San (Hundred Dispersions Powder) to release the exterior, then administer Mingmu Yin (Bright Eye Drink) for natural recovery. Avoid alcohol and meat for three to five days. In frail children, dust often enters the eyes; rubbing causes swelling, fever, pain, and incessant crying. Use Biceng Gao (Dust-Repelling Ointment) for immediate effect.
[Tang] Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder): Treats heart heat causing red urine and red, swollen eyes.
Ingredients: Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each half liang); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each one qian).
Preparation: Grind into powder. Decoct with Jiaxincao (Centelli Herba) and Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum), take after meals.
I have never suffered from red eyes in my life, and this formula works like magic; it can be used for both adults and children. At the initial stage of red and dry eyes, simply use one's own urine, open the eyes while urinating, catch some with a finger, smear it on the eyes, then close them. Effect is seen shortly. This uses true qi to force out pathogenic heat.
