(Zhang Zhongjing) Lizhong Wan (Cinnamon Twig and Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill), also known as Ren Shen Lizhong Tang (Ginseng Cinnamon Twig Decoction). It treats Taiyin Bing (diseases of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel) occurring immediately, spontaneous diarrhea without thirst, abdominal pain due to Yin-cold, shortness of breath and cough, Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea), difficulty in digesting food, obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, or malaria, miasma, and epidemics causing deficiency and damage of Middle Qi that cannot be cured for a long time, or phlegm generated from Middle Jiao deficiency.
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root, each 3 liang).
The above four ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder, and made into pills with honey, the size of a chicken egg yolk. Mix one pill, crushed, with several he of boiling water, take warm, three to four times a day, two times at night; if there is no warmth in the abdomen, increase to three or four pills per dose. However, it is inferior to the decoction. The method for the decoction is to cut the four ingredients according to the original dosage, use eight sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng, remove the dregs, take one sheng warm, three times a day. The original discussion on modifications can be found in detail in the "Ancient Records" section of the Huoluan chapter. Note by Zhang: The dosages mentioned above are based on Han dynasty weights and measures. In later generations, each ingredient is usually used in amounts of only a few qian, while the amount of Licorice is halved, which is appropriate after consideration.
