[Bruce Jassid / Mylabris] (Mylabris, 斑蝥)
Acrid in flavor, cold in nature. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its action is specifically directed at unblocking the lower orifices, promoting diuresis, and eliminating toxicity. When used with glutinous rice, it treats dog bites from rabid dogs. When used with Talcum (Hua Shi), it treats inguinal buboes (Bian Du).
The drug is toxic. It can ulcerate flesh and induce abortion. The head and feet should be removed, and it should be stir-fried with glutinous rice until cooked. If used raw, it causes vomiting and diarrhea. Some people use only the qi absorbed by the rice without using the substance itself. It is incompatible with Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) and Croton Seed (Ba Dou). It is antagonistic to Soybean Flower (Dou Hua) and Licorice Root (Gan Cao). Also known as Ban Mao.
[Scorpion] (Scorpio, 全蝎)
Sweet and acrid in flavor, toxic. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its action is specifically directed at penetrating sinews and joints, expelling dampness, and dispelling wind. When used with Bai Fu Zi (Aconitum carmichaelii side root processed) and Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), it treats facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes). Contraindicated for patients with deficiency. The feet should be removed, and it should be baked dry. The tail is called "Xie Shao" (Scorpion Tail). For those stung by scorpions, applying cow's milk to the site provides immediate relief.
[Leech] (Hirudo, 水蛭)
Salty and bitter in flavor. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its action is specifically directed at breaking blood stasis and promoting circulation. When used with Fei Chong (Lytta vesicatoria), it treats blood accumulation. When used with Musk (She Xiang), it treats traumatic injuries. Grind leeches into a fine powder, mix with turtle urine, apply to the roots of beard hairs to cause them to fall out naturally; this is extremely effective. If raw leeches are accidentally swallowed, they may breed in the abdomen. In such cases, drinking several cups of water mixed with field mud will ensure their expulsion. Alternatively, drinking beef or sheep blood mixed with lard will also expel them. Stir-fry until yellow and brittle. It fears Calcined Alum (Duan Shi) and Salt. Also known as Ma Huang.
[Earthworm] (Pheretima, 地龙)
Cold in nature. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its action is specifically directed at treating delirium caused by heat diseases, vomiting caused by toxic dysentery, pediatric malnutrition (Gan Ji), and Gan sores. Rinse clean and dry in the sun. It can be stir-fried or ground into powder.
[Toad] (Bufo, 蟾蜍)
Acrid and cool in flavor, slightly toxic. Enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its action is specifically directed at clearing deficient heat, moving dampness, and killing parasites. For carbuncles and furuncles that have not yet suppurated, tie a toad to the lesion for half a day, then replace with another. After three changes, the toxin dissipates. For severe cases, cut open the toad and apply it to the wound. Three changes will ensure healing. To treat monostomatic abdominal distension (Gu Zhang), take one toad, fill its abdomen with Amomum fruit (Sha Ren), coat the outside thoroughly with yellow clay mud mixed with salt water, bake slowly over low heat until thoroughly heated, then remove the mud. Roast on Yin-Yang tiles until charred but retaining medicinal properties, then grind into fine powder. Take one qian each time, administered with Chenpi (Citrus reticulata peel) decoction. Recovery occurs after three to four doses. Chan Su (Toad Venom) is acrid and warm, and toxic. It treats back carbuncles and ding swellings, pediatric Gan disease, and brain Gan. Also known as Xia Ma.
[Frog / Bullfrog] (Rana, 田鸡)
Sweet and cold in flavor. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Its action is specifically directed at resolving labor fever and heat toxins, promoting diuresis, and reducing edema. Consuming it helps treat emaciation due to Gan disease and tonifies deficiency. It is particularly suitable for postpartum women. Crush and take the juice to treat Mumps (Xia Ma Wen). For generalized edema or monostomatic abdominal distension, take one or two frogs, remove the skin, roast, and eat; the swelling will subside naturally. Burn to ash and apply to Yue Shi Chuang (facial paralysis/nerve palsy). To treat toxic dysentery with inability to eat, take one frog, mash it, heat it on a tile, add a small amount of Musk (She Xiang), form into a cake, and apply to the umbilicus. Once Qi circulation resumes, eating becomes possible. Also known as Shui Wa.
