Wood Phase: All wind-induced tremors and dizziness belong to Liver Wood. "Diao" refers to trembling; "Xuan" refers to vertigo and confusion. Wind causing head and eye dizziness occurs because Wood Qi is excessive, implying that Metal Qi is deficient and fails to control Wood, allowing Wood to generate Fire. Wind belongs to Yang, and Yang governs movement; the interaction of two movements results in dizziness. In spring and summer, when Wind and Fire interact, whirlwinds often arise, or dizziness may occur while boating, riding horses, traveling by carriage, or dancing in circles, with continuous motion, bending left and right, and wavering between straight and curved, which is the function of Wind.
Fire Phase: All pain, itching, sores, and ulcers belong to Heart Fire.
Earth Phase: All dampness-induced swelling and fullness belong to Spleen Earth. The term "all dampness" refers to the physical nature of the earth. When Earth dampness is extremely abundant, symptoms of stagnation, damp obstruction, swelling, and fullness arise; thus, even without external dampness, the internal principle remains similar (referring to dampness as the inherent nature of Earth).
Metal Phase: All Qi stagnation and flaccidity syndromes belong to Lung Metal. "Yu" refers to distension and a sense of rushing pressure. The Lung governs Qi; Qi belongs to Yang, is light and clear, and ascends. Therefore, the Lung governs the upper body. If distension and rushing pressure occur, it is because Qi cannot ascend. "Wei" refers to weakness and inability to move the limbs. This arises because Lung Metal is inherently dry; dryness pathology leads to a decline in blood volume, failing to nourish the whole body. Thus, when Autumn Metal Qi is strong, mist prevails, and grass and trees wither and fall.
Water Phase: All cold-induced contraction and pulling belong to Kidney Water. Convergence and tension are the functions of Cold; therefore, in winter cold, the body becomes stiff and contracted.
Jueyin Wind-Wood: All sudden stiffness, limb pain, internal urgency, tendon spasms, and limb flexion/extension difficulties belong to Wind-Wood Qi.
Shaoyin Ministerial-Fire: All diseases such as wheezing, vomiting, acid regurgitation, acute diarrhea with tenesmus, muscle cramps, turbid urine, abdominal distension sounding like a drum, carbuncles, gangrene, consumptive disease, rashes, tumors, Qi disorders, tuberculosis, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, mental confusion and depression, swelling, nasal congestion with rhinorrhea or epistaxis, hemorrhage, hematochezia, stranguria and retention, fever, aversion to cold, shivering, fright, or weeping, delirium, and bloody nasal discharge all belong to Ministerial-Fire Qi.
Taiyin Damp-Earth: All spastic stiffness, fluid retention, stagnation and obstruction, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, flaccidity, reversal cold, chest and abdominal fullness, heavy body, and edema that does not rise upon pressing (like mud) belong to Damp-Earth Qi.
Shaoyang Ministerial-Fire: All heat-induced confusion and convulsions, twitching and palpitations, spasms, convulsions, sudden fainting, restlessness and agitation, mania and unruliness, cursing and fright, swelling, soreness and pain, rebellious Qi rushing upward, lockjaw, feeling as if losing one's spirit, sneezing, vomiting, sores and ulcers, pharyngeal obstruction, tinnitus and deafness, vomiting and gurgling, inability to swallow food, blurred vision, acute diarrhea with convulsions, and sudden death from acute illness all belong to Ministerial-Fire Qi.
Yangming Dry-Metal: All dryness, withered and dried-out states, dry skin, and wrinkled peeling belong to Dry-Metal Qi.
Taiyang Cold-Water: All diseases manifesting as clear and cold excretions from above and below, clear and profuse urination, vomit and diarrhea with fishy/foul odors, masses (jia), hard nodules, hernia, abdominal fullness and acute pain, lack of hunger after eating, difficulty in flexion and extension, reversal cold with lockjaw and rigidity all belong to Cold-Water Qi.
For any excess or deficiency in Qi, whether it arrives late or early, it is due to the First Qi being thirteen days early or late. The same applies to the other five Qi periods. The six Qi govern specific periods, recorded using the characters Da (Great), Fen (Divide), and Xiao (Small). Roughly, Great Cold and Heat correspond to the First and Fourth Qi; Spring and Autumn Equinoxes correspond to the Second and Fifth Qi; Grain Full and Cold Dew correspond to the Third and Final Qi. Each Qi governs slightly more than sixty days.
The verse says: If the illness does not match the current year's Qi, look for which year's Qi matches it. Seek the living method from that year, and you will know it all lies within the *Zhi Zhen Yao Da Lun* (Supreme Essentials).
When humans contract pathogenic Qi, the onset varies in timing. Therefore, one must determine which year's Qi pattern matches the patient's symptoms; only then can treatment be perfectly appropriate.
