Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue Green Dragon Decoction) and Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Green Dragon Decoction) by Zhang Zhongjing both treat Yi Yin (fluid retention in the limbs and muscles), which should be treated by inducing sweating. Both formulas are found in the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage) section.
Commentary: These two formulas belong to the acrid-warm agents that disperse wind-cold from the Tai Yang (Greater Yang) channel. Xiao Qing Long Tang uses Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Xi Xin (Asarum), and Ban Xia (Pinellia) to treat fluid qi. Generally, when the exterior syndrome of cold damage is unresolved and there is water-fluid under the heart, the water-cold qi clashes, leading to various symptoms such as wheezing and coughing; thus, this formula is used to induce sweating and dissipate fluid. Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) borrows this formula for treating Yin (fluid retention).
San Yin Fang's Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Infusion) treats phlegm accumulation stagnating in the chest, diaphragm, and epigastrium, causing chest tightness, vomiting and regurgitation, phlegm-saliva, dizziness, burning discomfort, or headache and fever with symptoms resembling cold damage (formula seen in Ju Fang / Formulas of the Bureau).
Commentary: This formula derives from the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) Chai Hu (Bupleurum) pattern principles, treating common cold pathogens complicated by phlegm-fluid disease. The formula mentions that Qian Hu (Peucedanum) and Ge Gen (Pueraria) can only release the muscle layer, while Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus) and Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) naturally widen the middle and clear the diaphragm. Some doubt it due to its cool nature, but I observe the drug properties are not cool; it is also an acrid-ping (neutral) agent. Ju Fang's Jin Fei Cao San (Golden Wave Herb Powder) treats wind-phlegm, eliminating neck stiffness, chills and fever, and coughing.
Herbs: Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba - removed nodes), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix) (each 1 liang), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root), Chi Shao (Red Peony Root), Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia Tuber) (each 3 qian).
Decoction method: Coarsely crush, decoct with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube).
Huo Ren Shu's Jin Fei Cao San removes Ma Huang and Chi Shao, adding Fu Ling (Poria) and Xi Xin (Asarum).
Commentary: This formula derives from the Yangming (Yang Brightness) Xuan Fu Hua Dai Zhe Shi (Inula and Hematite) pattern principles; it is a resolving and phlegm-dispersing agent. Ju Fang's version has an acrid-ping flavor, while Huo Ren's version is acrid-warm.
Jin Gui Yao Lue's Shi Zao Tang (Ten Jujubes Decoction) treats Xuan Yin (suspended fluid) causing internal pain.
Herbs: Yuan Hua (Genkwa Flower - roasted), Gan Sui (Kansui Root), Da Ji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix) (equal parts).
Decoction method: Pound and sieve. Boil ten jujubes in 1.5 sheng of water until reduced to 0.8 sheng. Remove dregs and add the herbal powder. Strong individuals take 1 qian bi; frail individuals take half a qian bi. Take at dawn. If no effect, increase by half a qian bi until rapid purgation occurs. Afterward, nourish the body with millet porridge.
Commentary: This formula derives from the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) water-fluid pattern principles. Pharmacologically, Yuan Hua's acridity disperses fluid, while the bitterness of the other two drains water. Gan Sui reaches directly to where fluid qi binds; it is the holy medicine for draining water. However, it is toxic and must not be used lightly; the same applies below.
San Yin Fang's Kong Xian Dan (Control Saliva Pill) treats sudden onset of hidden pain in the chest, back, hands, feet, neck, waist, and hips, unbearable with bone-tendon traction like a hook, moving constantly. This is caused by phlegm-saliva changing above and below the heart and diaphragm. Or cold numbness in hands and feet with blocked qi and vessels, mistakenly identified as paralysis, which is incorrect.
Herbs: Gan Sui (removed heart), Zi Da Ji (Purple Euphorbia Root - peeled), Zhen Bai Jie Zi (True White Mustard Seed) (equal parts).
Decoction method: Pound into powder, make pills with paste size of paulownia seeds. Dry in sun. Take after meals and before sleep, with light ginger soup or cooked water, 5-7 to 10 pills. Increase number for severe phlegm.
Another prescription, Miao Ying Wan (Miraculous Response Pill), consists only of the above three ingredients.
For shock-phlegm, add Zhu Sha (Cinnabar); for pain, add Quan Xie (Scorpion); for wine-phlegm, add Xiong Huang (Realgar) and Quan Xie; for arm numbness, add Mu Bie Zi (Strychnos Seed - remove oil shell); for shock-qi masses, add Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scale), Bie Jia (Trionycis Carapax), Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome), and Peng Ze (Curcuma Zedoaria). For heat-phlegm, add Pen Xiao (Saltpeter); for cold-phlegm, add Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), Hu Jiao (Piperis Nigris Fructus), and Gui (Cinnamon Bark).
Xuan Ming Shu's San Hua Shen You Wan (Three Flowers Divine Protection Pill) adds Qian Niu Zi (Pharbitidis Semen), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Qing Fen (Calomelas) to Shi Zao Tang (see detailed lower formula).
Commentary: The above two formulas are still modifications of Shi Zao Tang, deriving from the Shaoyin water-fluid pattern principles. The former formula removes Yuan Hua and adds Bai Jie Zi. Materia Medica states Bai Jie Zi treats upper qi, induces sweating, and clears chest-diaphragm cold-phlegm, likely because phlegm in the chest requires this herb to penetrate. Adding Qian Niu Zi and Da Huang greatly drains damp-heat in blood and qi, while Qing Fen removes salivary accumulation. Deficient persons must not use it lightly.
Jin Gui Yao Lue's Nong Po Da Huang Tang (Magnolia Bark and Rhubarb Decoction) treats Zhi Yin (supporting fluid) causing hypochondriac fullness.
Herbs: Nong Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex - 1 chi), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma - 6 liang), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus - 4 pieces).
Decoction method: Boil in 5 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng. Take warm.
Commentary: This is Xiao Cheng Qi Tang (Minor Order the Qi Decoction), belonging to the Yangming purgative pattern principles.
Wang Yin Jun's Gun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill).
Verse: "Turning over in the steamer, armor hanging gold; now wearing grass hall deep. Meeting two eights seeking jin correct, nitre green malachite double if sinking seventeen taels plus half liang."
Make water pills size of paulownia seeds, intended for frequent measurement. Treats thousand strange syndromes with divine efficacy; causes water diarrhea, so double bodies cannot bear it.
Commentary: This formula uses Da Huang (Rhubarb) and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) as sovereign drugs to greatly drain Yangming damp-heat; Meng Shi (Malachite) sinks phlegm; Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) guides all qi up to heaven and down to spring, acting as envoy. It can be used for excess-heat syndromes.
Li Dongyuan's Pi Wei Lun (Treatise on the Spleen and Stomach) Juan Yin Zhi Shi Wan (Eliminate Fluid Aurantium Pill) drives out fluid, eliminates phlegm, directs stagnation, and clears the diaphragm.
Herbs: Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium - peeled, each 2 liang), Hei Qian Niu (Black Pharbitis Seed - 8 liang, take 2 liang powder).
Decoction method: Pound into powder, boil water with wheat paste to make pills size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills each time with ginger soup.
Ruizhu Tang's Formula Shen Xian Zhui Tan Wan (Immortal Phlegm-Sinking Pill).
Herbs: Bu Zhu Zao Jiao (Non-decaying Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit - remove skin/string, roast with butter to yellow, remove seeds, net weight 1 liang 6 qian), Hei Qian Niu (Black Pharbitis Seed - 1 jin, take first powder 4 liang), Sheng Bai Fan (Raw Alum - 1 liang 2 qian).
Decoction method: Pound into fine powder, make pills with clear water size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills on empty stomach with warm wine.
Bao Jian's Da Li Ge Wan (Greatly Benefit Diaphragm Pill) treats wind-phlegm excess-fullness, wheezing-cough, and wind-qi attacking upward.
Herbs: Hei Qian Niu (Black Pharbitis Seed - 4 liang, raw), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zao Jiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride - each 2 liang), Huai Jiao (Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus - 1 liang, stir-fried), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix - 0.5 liang), add Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) and Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (each 5 qian).
Decoction method: Pound into fine powder, make pills with ginger juice paste size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills after meals with ginger soup.
Di Tan Wan (Phlegm-Washing Pill) treats San Jiao (Triple Burner) qi blockage, downward phlegm, alcohol, and food stagnation.
Herbs: Hei Qian Niu (Black Pharbitis Seed - 2 liang, stir-fry take powder), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), San Leng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma - baked), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
Decoction method: Pound into powder, make pills with paste size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills each time after meals with ginger soup.
Commentary: The above four formulas use Qian Niu Zi (Pharbitis Seed), Zao Jiao (Gleditsia Fruit), Mu Xiang (Aucklandia), and Bing Lang (Areca Nut), all deriving from Jueyin (Terminal Yin) pattern principles. Qian Niu Zi guided by Da Huang enters blood; guided by qi-moving herbs, it enters qi. It is originally a drug draining damp-heat in qi, capable of severely depleting primordial qi; users must beware. Tou Luo Dan (Transparent Net Pill) treats phlegm-excess coughing and chest-diaphragm obstruction.
Herbs: Zao Jiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit - roast with butter, remove skin/string, 1 liang), Hei Qian Niu (Black Pharbitis Seed - slightly stir-fry, 1 liang), Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen - flour-roast yellow, remove skin/point, 1 qian), Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus - remove oil, grind separately, 1 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma - 1 liang), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma - 1 liang, wrap in paper, soak in water, slow-fire dry).
Decoction method: Pound into fine powder, make pills with fresh ginger juice size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills after meals with ginger soup.
Commentary: This is a modification of Zhang Zhongjing's Bei Ji Wan (Emergency Pill), a drug breaking hard accumulations and clusters, using both cold and heat.
San Yin Fang's Po Yin Wan (Break Fluid Pill) treats five fluids stagnating and accumulating into masses, supporting fullness, snatching heart pain in chest and hypochondrium.
Herbs: Bi Bo (Long Pepper Fruit), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), Hu Jiao (Piperis Nigris Fructus), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Wu Mei Rou (Mume Fructus Flesh), Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus - peeled), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Xie Shao (Scorpion Tail) (equal parts).
Decoction method: Soak Qing Pi together with Ba Dou in soy milk overnight. Strain next day and stir-fry together. Stir-fry orange peel until scorched, then remove Ba Dou. Use the soaked water to steam Wu Mei Rou until cooked. Grind finely into paste. Make pills size of mung beans. Take 50 pills before sleep with ginger soup; swallowing with saliva is also acceptable.
Commentary: This is a great heat drug breaking hard accumulations and cold masses.
Ju Fang's Miao Xiang Wan (Miraculous Fragrance Pill) treats all long-standing sedimentation.
Herbs: Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus), Ni Fen (Calomelas), Pi (Arsenic), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Niu Huang (Bovis Calculus), Shui Yin (Mercurius), Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum), She Xiang (Moschus).
Decoction method: Dosages and preparation see original formula.
Commentary: This formula uses Ba Dou and Pi to break hardness and masses, added with Nao and She Xiang etc., acrid-aromatic, flying and penetrating drugs that unblock the five zang organs, enter bones, and penetrate muscles.
Qian Shi's Bai Bing Zi (White Cake Seeds).
Herbs: Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus - 24 pieces, remove skin/membrane, boil in 1 dou water until water is gone), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma - soak in boiling water seven times, bake and grind), Qing Fen (Calomelas), Hua Shi (Talcum), Tian Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian).
Decoction method: Grind evenly, then add Ba Dou. Make pills with glutinous rice paste size of small beans, shape into cakes. Decoct Cong Bai (Scallion White) soup to take.
Commentary: This is Qian Yi's drug for treating pediatric wind-phlegm, shock-saliva, epilepsy, and convulsions, promoting downward phlegm. The above formulas using Ba Dou etc., are likely because phlegm-fluid masses and accumulations bind firmly; without these, they cannot be removed. Thus, Yi Lao (Zhang Yuansu) calls them "Gate-Cutting and Door-Seizing Generals." However, careful examination is essential; do not use lightly.
Ancient formulas have many variations of Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus) with cold, heat, warm, cool, and five-color assisting and guiding drugs. Use according to appropriateness (all seen in Yuan Rong).
