The eyes are associated with the Liver, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney. The entanglement of red filaments indicates that Fire from the Spleen transmits to the Lung, then to the Kidney, and finally to the Liver. Treatment should focus on heavily clearing Spleen Heat while simultaneously addressing these three meridians, after which the redness of the eyes will recede. Treating this mistakenly as an ophthalmological disorder causes significant harm.
The head is the chief of the body, possessing the lightest and clearest Qi, making it difficult for pathogenic factors to invade. Generalized dryness and agitation accompanied by profuse sweating only on the head indicate that intense toxicity is boiling within, causing rising Heat, thus resulting in sweat gushing forth.
Teeth are the surplus of bone. Some attribute teeth grinding to Blood deficiency, which may be true for miscellaneous diseases. However, teeth grinding in epidemic macules is due to extreme Heat in the Liver meridian. The Liver is the Sea of Blood; when subjected to Fire simmering, the teeth lose their nourishment, leading to frequent episodes.
In miscellaneous diseases, epistaxis (nosebleed) is forced by floating Fire in the Lung meridian. In epidemics, however, it is Stagnant Heat in the Yangming channel rushing upward to the brain. Since the nose connects to the brain, hot Blood overflows, causing blood to flow from the nose like a spring.
White spots on the tongue resembling pearls represent the transformation into Water. This condition is more severe than the purple, crimson, yellow, or black colors, and even more so than the "thorns" described by ancient physicians.
(This is a tongue manifestation not recorded in the traditional Thirty-Six Tongue Diagnoses.)
At the onset of epidemic disease, the coating resembles greasy powder, indicating that extreme Fire transforms into Water. If physicians mistakenly diagnose this as Cold and recklessly administer warming and releasing formulas, the condition worsens, and the coating becomes thicker. Administering heavy doses further depletes Essence and Fluids, preventing Water from ascending. Simmered by dual Fires, the coating turns white to black, becoming hard as iron and thick as armor, producing a clattering sound when struck. Speech becomes unclear, but this is not tongue rolling. With correct treatment, the armor-like coating will detach completely. (Empirical experience)
(Also not found in the traditional Thirty-Six Tongue Diagnoses.)
Manifesting on the tongue, varying in color from red to purple, ranging in size from horse milk to cherry, in numbers of three to five or more, discharging pus and bleeding. One must heavily clear Heart Fire. Pits will form on the tongue surface, which will level out naturally upon recovery. (Empirical experience)
After the resolution of febrile disease, if the tongue protrudes more than one cun and cannot retract for days, it is named Yang Excess (Yang Qiang). This results from sexual indiscretion. If the tongue extends several inches, it is incurable.
When Liver Heat is excessively strong, Blood has nowhere to store itself and overflows upward through the Heart's opening (the tongue) and exits.
The gums belong to the Stomach, while the teeth are governed by the twelve meridians. This occurs when Heat from the Yangming channel transmits to the Shaoyin channel; the two channels combine, causing blood to bleed from between the teeth.
