Su Shi once said: "Medical prescriptions should only be judged by their efficacy in the world, without necessarily adhering strictly to classical texts. Since the principles have been elucidated, practicing medicine based on these guidelines represents the highest level of medical art." My friend, Mr. Ma Yuncong, excelled in ophthalmology following the teachings of the *Longmu Lun* (Treatise on Longmu), curing various diseases. He claimed that his knowledge of the "Seventy-Two Syndromes" was acquired from Wang Jun Fuwan of Xijiang, who stated that he learned it from Sun Taizhen (Sun Simiao) of the Tang Dynasty. Yuncong once complained to me dejectedly: "Previously, Fuwan cured my eye disease and taught me the prescription with the intention that I should not keep it secret. However, I am old and poor, lacking the means to have it printed. What should I do?" I was also as poor as Yuncong, so I wrote a preface for him, believing that among the vast multitude, there would naturally be those who would respond. Two or three years have passed since then. In early spring, I met him at the market of Jimen and asked if his previous wish had been fulfilled. He replied, "Not yet." In summer, I met him again at the market of Jimen and asked the same question. He replied, "Not yet." For others' prescriptions, people print them as they wish; but for the book one wishes to print oneself, it requires others to do it on one's behalf. Unless one possesses great merit, such help cannot be sought. Within a distance of a hundred li or just a few steps, why are there so many virtuous people in the world? Nevertheless, Yuncong continued to seek, and among the vast multitude, there were indeed responders. Suddenly, Yuncong arrived and said, "Mr. Sui Kun Tie from Dongwu generously agreed to print this book." I have long known Mr. Sui to be a virtuous person. This printing project is not merely for Yuncong, Wang Jun Fuwan, or Sun Taizhen of the Tang Dynasty, but is motivated by compassion for the blind in the world and future generations. Does this benefit extend only to prefectures and counties?! I previously said, 'You continue to seek, and among the vast multitude, there will be responders.' Now it has indeed come true! Indeed it has come true!
Li Huanzhang, courtesy name Xian, from Qiansheng, inscribed.
The human eyes symbolize the sun and moon in the sky and the springs on earth. If celestial Qi does not descend and terrestrial Qi does not ascend, and the two Qi fail to interact, then anomalies in the weather occur. Yin and Yang clash and erode each other, causing the sun and moon to become dim and obscured. Consequently, sweet dew no longer descends from heaven, primal Yang becomes rampant, and the sweet springs of rivers and lakes cease to flow smoothly. In the human body, when the ascending and descending of Qi and Blood are orderly, and Water and Fire are balanced (Ji Ji), various diseases do not arise.
The five wheels and eight corridors of the eye correspond to the five Zang organs and six Fu organs. The cornea (Heijin) belongs to the Liver; the sclera (Baijing) belongs to the Lung; the pupil (Tongren) belongs to the Kidney; the upper and lower eyelids belong to the Spleen; the inner and outer canthi belong to the Heart and Small Intestine; and the rotational movement of the eyeball belongs to the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). Disease in the Heart results in blood failing to nourish the eyes; disease in the Kidneys leads to dimness of the pupil; pathology in the Lungs causes an increase in red veins on the white of the eye day by day; disorders in the Liver result in the formation of nebulae (opacities). Moreover, eye diseases in both men and women often stem from damage to the Liver and Lung meridians, caused by emotions such as worry, anger, sexual desire, and the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Grief, Fear, Fright). Internal injury to the Zang-Fu organs manifests externally in the eyes. The Liver belongs to Wood, and the Lung belongs to Metal. Agitation injures the Lung, where Metal overacts on Wood; anger injures the Liver, causing Liver Qi to rush upward and brain fluid to sink downward. This leads to the formation of opacities on the cornea, obscuring the pupil, blocking sunlight, resulting in blurred vision, tearing, and various abnormal changes.
Specialists in ophthalmology nowadays often resort to applying medicinal drops, yet repeated treatments yield no effect. They use pills and powders containing kidney-tonifying herbs. They fail to realize that the Kidney is the mother of the Liver; tonifying the Kidney generates Liver Qi. However, if Liver Qi rushes upward, opacities on the cornea may reappear, leading to an endless cycle. These arrogant practitioners have not encountered true masters, relying instead on oral transmission and mutual understanding, daring to claim they possess benevolent arts and are skilled physicians for the world. I am now fortunate to have encountered a master, Teacher Ran Guangqi, and received instruction from the unworldly practitioner, Master Da Piao Qimei, who is one hundred and forty years old. He secretly transmitted this prescription to circulate for ten thousand generations, proving effective every time it is used. I now wish to release this prescription to the world, which also serves to preserve my own peace and well-being.
Sudden onset of acute red eye (Baochi) is often due to improper regulation. Internal stagnation in the five Zang organs manifests externally in the eyes. It resembles violent winds and heavy rains in nature, requiring the application of the exterior-releasing method using Chonghe Tang (Harmonizing Decoction).
