When the Spleen is deficient, the Earth element fails to control Water, leading to water dampness infiltrating the Spleen Earth, seeping into the skin, and pouring into the muscles, resulting in swelling (Edema). The manifestations include slight puffiness of the eyelids, heaviness and stiffness of the limbs, scanty and yellow urine, loose stools, thin and shiny skin that retains an indentation upon pressure. A floating and large pulse indicates a favorable prognosis, while a deep and fine pulse indicates an unfavorable one.
Main Formula: Chi Fu Ling (Polyporus with Hostwood), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Zhu Ling (Polyporus).
If urine output is low, add Hua Shi (Talcum) and Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen). If there is asthma/wheezing, add Ma Zi (Cannabis Seed), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Luo Bo Zi (Radish Seed), and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus). For severe cases, add Ting Li (Lepidii Semen). If phlegm is present, add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma). If abdominal distension occurs, add Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus), and Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix). If Qi stagnation exists, add Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), San Leng (Sparganii Rhizoma), and Peng Zhi/E Zhu (Curcumae Rhizoma). Add Sheng Jiang Pi (Zingiberis Recens Pericarpium) and Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla), decoct in water and take orally.
Deficiency of the Zang-Fu organs, consumption of rich and sweet foods, exposure to cold, or heat can all cause abdominal pain. If the child cries loudly with a voice piercing to the Heart, it is a sign of death. This condition is identified if the Ren Zhong (philtrum), nose, forehead, lips, and mouth all turn black simultaneously, accompanied by a large pulse.
Main Formula: Wu Mei (Mume Fructus), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma - processed), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chuan Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Ku Liu Gen Pi (Meliae Cortex Radicis).
If abdominal pain occurs, add Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). For severe pain, add Shi Jun Zi (Quisqualis Fructus). Decoct in water and take orally.
Pediatric cough is mostly caused by contracting wind pathogens, damaging the Lung Meridian; or by wearing too many clothes/blankets, causing heat accumulation in the Lung; or by overeating salty and sour foods. The causes do not exceed these three types, so caution is essential. Because children's Zang-Fu organs are fragile, rapid recovery is difficult; if delayed, it may transform into Dun Sou (Pertussis/Whooping Cough). During attacks, the child clenches fists and stamps feet, face turns red, tears flow, food is vomited up, and even blood may appear, becoming a stubborn disease. It may also transform into Lung Wind Phlegm Asthma, reaching critical danger, all evolving from minor symptoms. For external contraction, Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Schisandra Decoction) is suitable; for heat accumulation, Qin Lian Er Chen Tang (Scutellaria, Coptida, and Two-Chen Decoction) is appropriate.
Main Formula (for chronic cough): Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix), Bai Bu (Stemonae Radix), Bai He (Lilii Bulbus), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus - 7 grains, crushed), Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen), Luo Bo Zi (Radish Seed - stir-fried, ground). Decoct in water and take orally.
If wheezing occurs, add Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus - stir-fried, ground), and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus). If there is much phlegm, add Tian Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum), and Hai Shi (Aragonitum). To moisten the Lung, add Xing Ren (Prunus Armeniacus Semen). For Lung Fire, add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Pi Pa Ye (Loquat Leaf - brushed clean of hairs, honey-fried, decocted), and Zhu Li (Bambusae Sap). To benefit the Lung, add Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) and Chi Ling (Polyporus with Hostwood).
To stop pediatric cough: Xi Yi (likely Pear/Xue Li, kept as per text), remove peel and core, steam with honey and eat. White radish and Bai Guo (Ginkgo Seed) boiled in water, mixed with melted Yi Tang (Maltose) and eaten.
