Qian (Heaven) is one, Dui (Lake) is two, Li (Fire) is three, Zhen (Thunder) is four, Xun (Wind) is five, Kan (Water) is six, Gen (Mountain) is seven, Kun (Earth) is eight.
Generally speaking, for men, the true hexagram obtained from the deep pressure (Chen Qu) of the Liver pulse is used to examine their early years; the middle pressure (Zhong Qu) is used to examine their middle age; and the Spleen pulse at the Right Guan position is used to judge their late years, with deep pressure being essential for accuracy. For women, the Lung pulse under deep pressure is used to determine early years; middle pressure is used to judge middle age; and the Spleen region under deep pressure is used to determine late years. For instance, if the Liver pulse stops upon encountering the number one during its ascent, this corresponds to matters governed by the Qian hexagram, representing the qi destiny before the age of twenty-five. If it stops upon encountering the number two, it indicates the operation of the Dui hexagram. The rest can be inferred by analogy.
Generally, men are suited to the qi fortune of the Southeast directions, namely Li, Xun, Zhen, and Kun, taking advantage of the mutual generation of qi fortune without mutual overcoming or regretful stagnation. Women are suited to the Northwest directions, namely Qian, Dui, Kan, and Gen, as their qi gathering aligns with their appropriate nature. If a man receives the Northwest fortune, it constitutes regretful stagnation, leading to frequent successes and failures in affairs; the same applies to women. The pulse of origin is used to judge moral character. By applying deep pressure to the Heart pulse, if the response stops at the number one, it corresponds to the Qian hexagram, indicating background of origin. Since the Qian and Dui hexagrams signify a gentle and broad-minded nature with an open chest and mind; the Zhen hexagram signifies straightforwardness and quick speech, resistant to provocation; the Li and Xun hexagrams signify a bright and magnanimous nature; the Kan and Gen hexagrams signify a stubborn and deep-seated nature, often cruel and unpredictable, with a tendency to benefit oneself at the expense of others; the Kun hexagram signifies a slow nature with a heart capable of bearing things and attending to details. Judging by these references, there will be no error.
For stout individuals, the pulse should be deep and fine, felt only when pressing to the bone. For thin individuals, the pulse should be floating and large, responding to touch, with the feeling extending to sinews and bones being appropriate. For wealthy and noble individuals, the pulse should be calm and still, not restless or urgent; it responds only when pressed to the bone, yet within this calmness, the pulse quality hides clearly like a pearl, which is considered a high-grade pulse. For women, the pulse of origin is judged by the calmness of the Liver region, combining the hexagram numbers to infer character and behavior, along with reasoning based on mental disposition. The verse states: The key method of pulse diagnosis lies in the healer's wise and virtuous heart; merely following the book rules is futile. Generally, the normal rate of the Ping pulse requires detailed observation of superficial and deep layers to determine proximate sources. With divine changes spanning hundreds of thousands of years, whether referring to previous or subsequent chapters, the creation is divided between the left and right hands. If one comprehends this, responses will be fluent as if transmitted directly.
