[Facial Five-Position Diagram]
Facial Diagnosis: The left cheek corresponds to the Liver, the right cheek to the Lung, the forehead to the Heart, the nose to the Spleen, and the chin to the Kidney. If the complexion is red, it indicates Heat; treatment should be administered according to the specific symptoms.
Eye Diagnosis: Redness of the eyes indicates Excess Heat in the Heart; pale red indicates Deficient Heat in the Heart; cyanosis indicates Excess Heat in the Liver; pale cyanosis indicates Deficient Heat in the Liver; yellowing indicates Excess Heat in the Spleen; slight yellowing indicates Deficient Heat in the Spleen; whiteness with turbidity indicates Excess Heat in the Lung.
If the eyes lack luster (absence of Jing-guang), it is due to Kidney Deficiency.
For infants under six months of age who are ill, the practitioner places the middle, index, and ring fingers below the hairline above the eyebrows on the forehead. If the infant's head turns to the left, the right hand is raised for examination; if the head turns to the right, the left hand is raised. The index finger represents the Upper Guan (Pass), the middle finger the Middle Guan, and the ring finger the Lower Guan. If all three fingers feel hot, it indicates contraction of Wind Pathogens, with symptoms such as nasal congestion and coarse breathing; if all three fingers feel cold, it indicates contraction of Wind-Cold, with symptoms such as cold viscera, vomiting, and diarrhea. If only the index and middle fingers are hot, it presents as upper heat and lower cold; if only the ring and middle fingers are hot, it is a sign of convulsion with fright. If only the index finger is hot, it indicates fullness of Qi in the chest and diaphragm, and indigestion of milk and food.
For children under three years old, observe the Three Passes at the Tiger's Mouth (the first segment of the index finger from the Tiger's Mouth is the Wind Guan, the second is the Qi Guan, and the third is the Life Guan, corresponding to the Earthly Branches Yin, Mao, and Chen). The pulse pattern on the left hand corresponds to the Heart and Liver, while that on the right hand corresponds to the Spleen and Lung. If the pulse pattern appears at the Wind Guan, the condition is easy to treat; if it extends to the Qi Guan, it is difficult to treat; if it reaches the Life Guan, it is a fatal condition. Furthermore, one must distinguish the color. For example, fright from beasts results in cyanosis across the three passes; fright from water results in blackness (or redness); fright from humans results in redness (or blackness). Purple indicates dysentery or diarrhea; yellow indicates fright from thunder. If the pulse patterns extend fully through the three passes to the fingertips, it is an extreme case of convulsive disease and is invariably fatal. If there are lines, either cyanotic or red and straight like a thread, it indicates damage to the Spleen by milk and food injury. Identical patterns on both hands indicate simultaneous onset of fright and accumulation. If three lines appear, white indicates wind-phlegm damaging the Lungs or wheezing; cyanosis indicates wind-cold and cough; redness indicates diarrhea; if accompanied by black, it indicates dysentery. Predominance of red with little white indicates white dysentery; predominance of black indicates bloody dysentery. Accompaniment of purple and chaotic patterns at the Tiger's Mouth indicates disharmony of Qi. Generally, the appearance of five colors in the pulse patterns signifies severe illness where colors change due to pathology. Pure blackness is incurable.
[Palm Tuina Diagram]
Pushing the meridians of the Spleen, Lung, Heart, and Liver upwards constitutes the Tonification method, while pushing downwards constitutes the Purging method. Why is the Kidney opposite? Because the four Zang organs are located superiorly, while the Kidney is inferior. In cases of Kidney Deficiency, pushing the Qi of the four Zang organs downwards nourishes the Kidney Water. If urine is turbid, obstructed, and red, upward lifting/pushing unblocks the water passages, clearing the urine naturally; hence, "pushing up is clearing."
[Water Bottom Moon Retrieval Diagram]
Pushing the San Guan (Three Transports) slowly facilitates the transformation and transportation of the Six Fu organs. Bagua manipulation is performed on the left hand for both males and females. Some argue that since females belong to Yin, they should use the right hand, failing to consider that if the right palm is mapped to the Later Heaven Bagua, the Zhen trigram is in the West, Dui in the East, Gen in the Northwest, and Kun in the Southwest. This would contradict the fixed principles of the Later Heaven Bagua. Would female tuina therefore alter these positions?
If a child's eyes roll upward, pinching the Xiaotianxin point towards the palm center with the thumbnail will resolve it.
If a child's eyes roll downward, pinching the Xiaotianxin point towards the Zongjin (Total Tendon) with the thumbnail will resolve it.
