[Ping An]: This section, from the beginning of the chapter to "thus obtained by Jue Qi," is found in *Su Wen* (Plain Questions), Volume 10, Chapter 37, "Qi Jue Lun" (Treatise on the Reversal of Qi), and also in *Jia Yi Jing* (The Classic of A-Bio Points), Volume 6, Section 10. From "San Yang Ji Wei Xia" to the end, it is found in *Su Wen*, Volume 13, Chapter 48, "Da Qi Lun" (Treatise on Extraordinary Pulse Conditions), and also in *Jia Yi Jing*, Volume 4, Part 1, Lower Compilation.
When Kidney transfers Cold to Spleen, edema and shortness of breath occur. (Regarding the transmission of pathogenic factors among the Five Zang organs, there are five types of evil: Xu Evil, Shi Evil, Zei Evil, Wei Evil, and Zheng Evil. Evil coming from the organ I generate is called Xu Evil; evil coming from the organ that generates me is called Shi Evil; evil coming from the organ I cannot overcome is called Wei Evil; evil coming from the organ I can overcome is called Zei Evil; and evil originating from oneself is called Zheng Evil. When Kidney transfers Cold to Spleen, this comes from the organ I cannot overcome, constituting Wei Evil. It means that when the Kidney receives Cold, it transmits it to the Spleen, causing Spleen Qi to fail to circulate throughout the body, resulting in edema. Cold damages the transformation of grain and water, leading to shortness of breath. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen*, this is written as "Liver." The New Correction states: "According to Quan Yuanqi's original text, it reads 'Kidney transfers Cold to Spleen.' Quan Yuanqi's annotation says: 'When Kidney is injured by Cold and transmits it to Spleen, Spleen governs flesh. Cold generated in the flesh condenses into hardness, which transforms into pus, thus causing an abscess. Blood injury leads to Qi deficiency, hence shortness of breath.' *Jia Yi Jing* also writes 'transfers Cold to Spleen.' Wang Bing, due to a mistaken text, interpreted it as Liver, which is a lapse even for a wise man." *Su Wen* and *Jia Yi Jing* use the character for "abscess" (Yong), same below. Note: "Disease transmission" in Yuan edition is "Internal Transmission." Coming from the overcoming place in Yuan edition is "From the overcome place.") When Spleen transfers Cold to Liver, abscesses and tendon contraction occur. (Spleen receives Cold Qi and transmits it to Liver, named Wei Evil. Because Spleen gives Cold Qi to Liver, Liver Qi becomes obstructed and blocked, thus forming abscesses. Liver governs tendons, so Liver disease causes tendon contraction.) When Liver transfers Cold to Heart, madness and diaphragmatic obstruction occur. (Liver receives Cold Qi and transmits it to Heart, named Xu Evil. Liver gives Cold Qi to Heart; Heart receiving Cold Qi leads to excessive heat and chaotic spirit, thus causing madness and diaphragmatic Qi blockage. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen*, "Ge" is written as "Ge".) When Heart transfers Cold to Lung, Fei Xiao (Lung Consumption) occurs, characterized by drinking one unit and urinating two units; this is a fatal condition and untreatable. (Heart receives Cold Qi and transmits it to Lung, named Zei Evil. Heart gives Cold Qi to Lung; Lung receiving Cold Qi generates heat, Lung tissue scorches causing thirst, named Fei Xiao. If drinking one sheng results in urinating one sheng, it is treatable; if drinking one sheng results in urinating two sheng, Lung is severely damaged, thus death ensues. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen*, the characters "Fei Xiao" are repeated; *Jia Yi Jing* writes "Wei Fei Xiao Fei Xiao Zhe".) When Lung transfers Cold to Kidney, Yong Shui (Surging Water) occurs. Yong Shui is characterized by hardness upon pressing the lower abdomen; Water Qi lodges in Large Intestine, making a gurgling sound like water in a bag when walking quickly; treatment should focus on the organ governing Lung. (Lung receives Cold Qi and transmits it to Kidney, named Xu Evil. Lung gives Cold Qi to Kidney; Kidney gets Yong Shui, Large Intestine fills with water, wrapping inside the abdomen like a cloth bag or jug. Since this is a disease of water retention caused by Lung Cold, treatment targets Lung. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen*, "Xia Jian" has "Xia" as "Bu"; *Jia Yi Jing* writes "An Qi Fu Bu Jian, Ze Ming" as "Chang Ming". *Jia Yi Jing* writes "Ru Guo Nang" as "Ru Nang Guo Jiang"; *Su Wen* writes "Ru Nang Guo Jiang, Shui Zhi Bing Ye", without the four characters "Zhi Zhu Fei Zhe".) When Spleen transfers Heat to Liver,惊悸 (Fright) and epistaxis occur. (Spleen receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Liver, named Wei Evil. Spleen gives Heat Qi to Liver; Liver blood becomes angry and excessive, injuring it, causing fright and nosebleeds.) When Liver transfers Heat to Heart, death occurs. (Liver receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Heart, named Xu Evil. Liver gives Heat Qi to Heart; the Heart houses the Spirit and does not accept external evil, thus accepting evil leads immediately to death.) When Heart transfers Heat to Lung, it transmits to Ge Xiao (Diaphragm Consumption). (Heart receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Lung, named Zei Evil. Heart gives Heat Qi to Lung; Lung receiving Heat Qi causes Diaphragm heat, consuming drinks and causing excessive thirst, thus named Ge Xiao. [Ping An]: In *Jia Yi Jing*, "Ge" is written as "Ge".) When Bao Gong (Uterus/Womb) transfers Heat to Bladder, Long (Dysuria) and hematuria occur. (Bao refers to the Female Womb. Heat in the Female Womb transmits to the Bladder/Urinary Bladder; Urinary Bladder receiving heat causes dysuria and hematuria.) When Bladder transfers Heat to Small Intestine, intestinal obstruction and constipation occur, with heat rushing upward causing oral ulcers. (Ge means blockage. Bladder belongs to Water; Small Intestine belongs to Fire. This is Zei Evil attacking, thus Small Intestine is blocked, unable to pass stool. Heat rushes upward, rotting the mouth, named Kou Mi. Mi means rot, pronounced Wang Zhi Fanqie. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen*, "Ge" is "Ge", "Mi" is "Mi"; *Jia Yi Jing* also uses "Mi".) When Lung transfers Heat to Kidney, it transmits to Rou Jing (Flaccid Spasm). (Lung receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Kidney, named Xu Evil. Lung gives Heat Qi to Kidney; Kidney receiving Heat Qi is named Rou Jing disease. Rou Jing manifests as stiffness and inability to turn. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen* and *Jia Yi Jing*, "Su Jing" is written as "Rou Jing".) When Kidney transfers Heat to Spleen, it transmits to deficiency, Chang Pi (Intestinal Dysentery/Fistula) leads to death, untreatable. (Kidney receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Spleen, named Wei Evil. Kidney gives Heat Qi to Spleen; Spleen governs grain and water, so Spleen receiving Heat Qi causes exhaustion of water and grain in the intestines, thus intestinal deficiency, blockage, and death. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen* and *Jia Yi Jing*, "Pi" is written as "Dan". Also, the sections "Lung transfers Heat to Kidney" and "Kidney transfers Heat to Spleen" appear before "Bao Gong transfers Heat to Bladder" in *Su Wen* and *Jia Yi Jing*. ) When Small Intestine transfers Heat to Large Intestine, Mi Sha (Secretive Hernia/Stasis) and Chen (Depression/Stagnation) occur. (Small Intestine receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Large Intestine, named Zei Evil. Small Intestine gives Heat Qi to Large Intestine causing disease, named Mi Sha. Large Intestine receiving Heat Qi becomes secret, astringent, depressed, and blocked, thus named Mi Chen. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen* and *Jia Yi Jing*, "Mi Sha" is written as "Fu Xia". Wang Bing's note says "'Fu' is same as 'Fu', blood stasis and difficulty imply menstrual stagnation and non-flow, thus saying 'Fu Xia Wei Chen'", which differs from Yang Xuancao's annotation.) When Large Intestine transfers Heat to Stomach, there is polyphagia but emaciation, and food entering the stomach is easily digested/disappeared. (Large Intestine receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Stomach, named Xu Evil. Large Intestine gives Heat to Stomach; Stomach receiving Heat Qi becomes full and excessive in digesting food, thus prone to hunger and eating much. However, due to excessive heat, food entering the Stomach does not transform into muscle, thus emaciation. "Yi" implies "Yi" (easy/change); meaning Stomach heat causes food to be easily digested and disappear, not generating muscle, hence emaciation. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen*, "Wei" is "Wei"; *Jia Yi Jing* writes "Er Sou Ming Yue Shi Dan".) When Stomach transfers Heat to Gallbladder, it is named Shi Yi (Food Ease/Emaciation). (Stomach receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Gallbladder, coming from the organ I cannot overcome, named Wei Evil. Stomach gives Heat Qi to Gallbladder; Gallbladder receives Heat Qi from Stomach grain, causing Gallbladder Qi to dissipate and change, still named Shi Yi. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen*, "Ming Yue" is "Yi Yue"; *Jia Yi Jing* writes "Yi Ming".) When Gallbladder transfers Heat to Brain, there is nasal pungency and vexation, Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis with turbid discharge), continuous flow of turbid mucus, transmitting to Qiu Nu (Rhinitis and Epistaxis), Chi (Eye Discharge), and Ming Mu (Difficulty opening eyes), thus obtained by Jue Qi. (Qiu, pronounced Ta Dian Qie, means turbid dirt. Chi, pronounced Yi Jie Fan, means eye discharge. Brain Marrow belongs to Kidney. Gallbladder receives Heat Qi and transmits it to Brain, coming from the front, named Shi Evil. Gallbladder gives Heat Qi to Brain; Brain receiving Gallbladder Heat causes nasal pungency and vexation, flowing into turbid mucus, continuously flowing for a long time, transmitting to Qiu Nu, Chi, and Ming Mu. Ming means difficulty opening eyes. This disease transmitted by Gallbladder is caused by rebellious Heat Qi. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen* and *Jia Yi Jing*, "Fan" is "Suan", "Yuan" is "Yuan". In *Su Wen*, "Jue Qi" is "Qi Jue"; *Jia Yi Jing* lacks "Qi". Note: "Fan" in Yuan edition is "Pin". Note: "Bing Yin" in Yuan edition mistakenly written as "Bing Mu".)
San Yang Ji Wei Xia (Pulse of San Yang is tight, leading to Xia accumulation). (Xia refers to diseases in the female uterus; men also have Xia causing disease. Generally, tight pulses indicate Cold. San Yang refers to Tai Yang. Observing a tight Tai Yang pulse indicates Yin excess and much Cold; men get Xia, women get Shi Xia (Stone Uterus) disease. [Ping An]: In *Su Wen*, after "Wei Xia", there are five characters "San Yin Ji Wei Shan". Note: "Xia Wei" in note, the character "Wei" is missing in Yuan edition.) Er Yin Ji Wei Xian Jue (Pulse of Er Yin is tight, leading to Epileptic Convulsion). (Er Yin refers to Shao Yin. Observing a tight Shao Yin pulse indicates struggle between Yang and Yin; Yang excess triggers pediatric epilepsy and cold extremities.) Er Yang Ji Wei Jing (Pulse of Er Yang is tight, leading to Fright). (Er Yang refers to Yang Ming. Struggle between Yang and Yin, Shao Yin excess, triggers fright in adults and children. [Ping An]: *Su Wen* New Correction states: "From 'San Yang Ji Wei Xia' to 'Er Yang Ji Wei Jing', Quan Yuanqi's version was in 'Jue Lun', Wang Bing moved it to 'Da Qi Lun'." Based on this, the complete book matches this book.)
