(Zhang Zhongjing) Treats conditions following Taiyang disease (Sun Yang Bing, a syndrome caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Taiyang meridian) where sweating, emesis, or purgation have been administered. After the resolution of the exterior pathogen, there is epigastric fullness and hardness, and belching persists. (After sweating, vomiting, or purging, the major pathogenic factor is difficult to fully resolve; the Stomach Qi is weak and disharmonious, causing deficient Qi to rebel upward, resulting in fullness and hardness. Belching, also known as eructation, is commonly referred to as burping.) It is also effective for treating regurgitation, dysphagia, and rebellious Qi that fails to descend.
Inula Flower (Xuanfuhua), Licorice Root (Gancao, 3 liang), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia, 0.5 sheng), Ginseng Root (Renshen, 2 liang), Hematite (Daizheshi, 1 liang), Fresh Ginger Shengjiang, 5 liang), Jujube (Dazao, 12 pieces).
Yu Jiayan stated: This is also due to retained fluid pathogens causing Qi rebellion, but because the Stomach Qi is depleted, the method employed focuses on nourishing the righteous Qi while dispersing residual pathogens. The main point lies in persistent belching; with epigastric fullness and hardness above, plus persistent belching, it indicates Stomach Qi rebelling upward, failing to descend entirely, having only ascent without descent. This is likened to the hoarse sound produced when a string breaks, and Earth Qi...
(Li Dongyuan) Treats Spleen and Stomach deficiency, manifesting as lethargy and a desire to lie down. At this time, the autumn dryness command prevails, and damp-heat is just receding. Symptoms include heavy body and joint pain, bitter taste in the mouth, dry tongue, lack of appetite, and food tasting flavorless. Irregular bowel movements and frequent urination occur. Accompanied by Lung disease symptoms, such as aversion to cold with shivering, and a depressed mood, this is due to Yang Qi failing to ascend.
Astragalus Root (Huangqi, 2 liang), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), Roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao), Ginseng Root (Renshen, 1 liang), Fried White Peony Root (Chao Shaoyao), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo), Angelica Pubescens Root (Duhuo), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng, 5 qian. Because Lung Qi prospers in autumn, acrid-warm herbs are used to drain excess.). Tangerine Peel (Chenpi, 4 qian, retaining the white pith), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Tu Chao Baizhu), Poria (Fuling, do not use if urination is free and thirst is absent), Alisma Rhizome (Zexie, do not use if no strangury exists), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu, 3 qian), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 2 qian). Decoct each 3 qian dose with ginger and jujube. (The listed indications claim it treats autumn dryness, which is highly inappropriate for this formula.)
Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) assists Yang Qi and benefits Stomach Qi; it is a superior formula for tonifying the Spleen and Stomach. Adding Astragalus Root tonifies Lung Qi and consolidates Defensive Qi (Wei Qi); White Peony Root astringes Yin and harmonizes Nutritive Qi (Ying Qi). Notopterygium Rhizome, Angelica Pubescens Root, Saposhnikovia Root, and Bupleurum Root dispel dampness and relieve pain (Notopterygium Rhizome removes pain in all joints) and raise Clear Yang Qi. Poria and Alisma Rhizome drain damp-heat and lower turbid Yin Qi. A small amount of Coptis Rhizome is added to clear deficient fire. Tonification includes dispersion, and dispersion includes retention/astringency. Thus, Qi becomes sufficient and Yang arises; righteous Qi naturally prospers, and pathogens submit.
