[Borneol]
Also known as Longnao Xiang (Dragon Brain Fragrance).
Functions: Dispersing, unblocking orifices, and dissipating constrained fire.
Nature and Flavor: Acrid and warm. Its fragrance is pungent and penetrating, capable of dispersing pathogens. It first enters the Lung Meridian, then transmits to the Heart and Spleen Meridians, and penetrates into the bones. It unblocks all orifices and dissipates constrained fire.
Indications:
- Convulsions, epilepsy, and phlegm confusing the mind (Li Dongyuan stated: It is suitable for wind diseases located in the bone marrow. If the disease is in the blood vessels and muscles, it may instead draw wind into the bones, like oil penetrating flour).
- Red eyes and corneal opacity (Mixed with milk and applied to the eyes several times a day. Wang Jiezhai stated: Borneol is extremely acrid and hot. Used for eye application to extract fire pathogens. This follows the treatment principle of "dispersing constrained fire." People mistakenly consider it cold and use it frequently, leading to accumulated heat damaging the eyes. Hence the saying "eyes do not go blind unless treated with borneol," referring to this cause).
- Deafness and nasal obstruction (Nasal polyps fall off after application; these are all effects of unblocking orifices).
- Throat bi (obstruction) and tongue protrusion (Dissipating fire).
- Bone pain and toothache (Treating bone conditions).
- Sunken smallpox lesions (Guided by pig heart blood, taken with wine or Zicao Decoction [Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma], to enter the Heart Meridian and promote eruption).
- Dystocia.
- Three parasites and five types of hemorrhoids (Wang Lun stated: People mistakenly think Borneol is cold, unaware that its acrid-dispersing nature is very strong, merely appearing cool. All aromatics belong to Yang; how could an extremely aromatic substance be cold? When I was young, I asked my uncle, Mr. Jianhou, about Ginger. He replied: Its body is hot but its function is cool. Generally, acrid substances are hot, but acrid-heat must be dispersed by acridity. Once wind-heat is dispersed, coolness remains. This is the meaning behind the Materia Medica stating Borneol is cold, which had never been clarified before. Recorded here).
Origin: Southern regions, said to be resin from old fir trees. The best quality is white as ice and shaped like plum blossom slices (Stored with fir charcoal to prevent loss; nowadays, many use sublimated camphor to adulterate it).
[Camphora]
Functions: Dispersing, unblocking orifices, and removing dampness.
Nature and Flavor: Acrid and hot, with a pungent and penetrating fragrance. It can generate fire within water (the flame intensifies when placed in water).
Actions: Unblocking passages, relieving stagnation, removing dampness, and killing parasites.
Usage: Placed in shoes to treat tinea pedis (Hong Kong foot). (*Jiyao* records: Mixed with Aconitum carmichaelii powder, formed into pills the size of a bean using vinegar, placed on the sole of the foot, and gently heated over a mild fire until sweating occurs, which indicates efficacy).
It also fumigates clothing and chests to repel infectious agents and insects.
Preparation: Made by slicing Camphor wood, soaking it in water, and decocting it. Properly sublimated, it can adulterate Borneol.
