Yiwei Shengyang Decoction: The method of tonifying Qi for blood loss is an ancient principle. First, tonify the Stomach Qi to assist growth; thus it is said that "when Yang grows, Yin grows." Sweet herbs are the primary task. The world generally considers this as tonifying Qi, but little do they know that sweet flavors can generate Blood, which is the principle of "Yang growing leads to Yin growing." Therefore, first regulate Stomach Qi; in the human body, internal Grain Qi is precious.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (2 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (remove if coughing exists), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (stir-fried, each 1.5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (3 qian), Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, root part) (soaked in wine), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Liquorice Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried, each 1 qian), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (each 0.5 fen), Sheng Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (2 qian, to drain latent heat from intense summer heat that injures Metal and causes Lung Qi rebellion; not used in autumn coolness).
Crush the above into coarse powder. Take 3 qian or 5 qian per dose. If appetite increases, increase the dose; if appetite decreases, reduce within the 3 qian limit. Do not take too much; minimum 2 qian per dose. Decoct in water, remove dregs, and take hot. If abdominal pain occurs, add Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 0.2 fen and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) a little per dose; if thirsty with dry mouth, add Gange (Puerariae Radix) 0.2 fen; if coughing, remove Renshen. If bleeding does not stop after taking this, switch to the following Chaihu Tiaojing Tang, performing a major lifting and raising action.
Chaihu Tiaojing Decoction: Treats continuous menstruation, bright red blood, stiffness of neck tendons, headache, stiffness and pain of the spine, and lack of appetite. (One must understand that for bright red blood, cooling methods are not used, but lifting and raising methods are employed; this should be contemplated based on the symptom of "lack of appetite".)
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Gaoben (Ligustici Rhizoma), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (each 0.5 fen), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (1 qian), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (0.7 fen), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, root part), Gancao (Liquorice Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried, each 0.3 fen), Honghua (Carthami Flos) (a small amount).
Cut the above into pieces. Prepare as one dose, decoct in water, remove dregs, and take slightly warm on an empty stomach. Slight sweating will immediately stop the bleeding. (Most external symptoms belong to the Taiyang channel, but the formula also addresses Shaoyang, Yangming, Taiyin, and Jueyin channels. Using Cangzhu as the sovereign herb, with minor amounts of Dangguishen and Honghua introduced into the Blood level to raise Yang Qi, constitutes a major lifting and raising action, embodying the meaning of using Yang from Yin.)
Tiaojing Shengyang Qushi Decoction: Treats women with leakage of foul blood (previously mentioned fresh/bright red, here foul/dark, these two words differ and should be carefully considered), irregular menstruation, or sudden severe metrorrhagia, with large amounts of watery discharge. This is caused by unregulated diet, physical overexertion, or inherent deficiency of Heart Qi. Due to alcohol consumption and fatigue, Heart Fire attacks Spleen Earth. The patient will likely exhibit lethargy and desire to lie down, inability to hold the limbs, exhaustion and weakness, lack of energy to move, shortness of breath with rebellious Qi rushing upward, and urgency. The pulse is slow yet wiry and urgent, feeling surging and large upon pressure, obtained at the middle-lower position, indicating Spleen Earth pathogen invasion. The Spleen nourishes the whole body; the Heart governs Blood, and Blood governs the vessels. When both are invaded, the disease resides in the vessels. Vessels are the mansion of Blood and the manifestation of Shen (Spirit). If the Heart does not command, the Bao Luo (Pericardium Collateral) substitutes. Thus, the Heart's vessel belongs to the Xin Xi (Heart System). The Xin Xi refers to the Bao Luo Mingmen vessel, which governs menstruation. All this results from Spleen-Stomach deficiency allowing the Pericardium to attack, causing irregular leakage of blood and water. Moreover, the Spleen and Stomach are the roots of Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang. One must remove dampness and clear heat, raise Wind Qi to overcome dampness. It is also said: "If Fire is constrained, disperse it."
Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 1.5 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gaoben (Ligustici Rhizoma), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Gancao (Liquorice Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried, each 1 qian), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (soaked in wine), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) (each 0.5 fen), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen) (0.7 fen).
Cut the above. Decoct in five large bowls of water until reduced to one large bowl, remove dregs, and take slightly warm. After taking medicine on an empty stomach, wait a while and eat breakfast to settle the medicine. One dose may suffice. (Earth sinking generates dampness, hence lethargy and desire to lie down; Wood constraint generates heat, hence rebellious Qi rushing upward. Slow pulse indicates dampness; wiry pulse indicates Wood. Constraint without extension generates heat, representing the intent of Heart Fire attacking Spleen. A surging-large pulse upon pressure indicates Fire below; appearing at the middle-lower position indicates the Earth location. The Bao Luo is Ministerial Fire, residing in the Mingmen, and is a multi-blood vessel; the disease is treated via Fire. Heart Fire hides virtue as Shen; Ministerial Fire obeys the Heart. Sanjiao governs Qi, Bao Luo governs Blood; thus, Fire in the Blood level specifically governs the Bao Luo, while Fire in the Qi level specifically governs the Sanjiao. Constraint prevents Fire from spreading freely; its flaming nature forces itself into the Blood level, injuring Yin collaterals. This formula uses Cangzhu and Shengma to disperse dampness of the Taiyin and Yangming; Chaihu and Fangfeng to reach the root of Jueyin and Shaoyang; Qianghuo and Gaoben to lift depression of the Shaoyin and Taiyang lower parts, i.e., "lifting what has sunk." These are all ascending and dispersing substances; excess consumes Qi and injures Metal, so Huangqi is added to protect the Lung, Danggui guides Blood to return to its source, and Gancao harmonizes Qi. Manjingzi cools Blood. These four agents constitute the method of restraining excessive harm. Saying one dose suffices is miraculous! Readers should grasp this meaning.) If moxibustion is applied to Xuehai (SP10) of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Channel for 14 or 21 moxa cones, it stops immediately.
This medicine employs a balancing method, using Wind herbs to overcome dampness, addressing Stomach Qi sinking and Qi pressing downward to save from sudden severe hemorrhage. If the illness resolves and menstrual foul matter is exhausted, although the main disease is removed, subsequent doses must use Huangqi, Gancao, Renshen, Danggui, etc., to tonify, adding blood-nourishing herbs to the Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). If menstrual foul matter continues to flow incessantly, one must particularly rescue the root and treat the primary channel. Simply tonify the Spleen and Stomach and retreat the hyperactivity of Heart Fire; this treats the root. If encountering leukorrhea and leakage during summer months, this decoction is suitable, stopping immediately after one dose. (Using lifting and raising as the main treatment addresses the branch as the root; retreating Heart Fire treats the root as the master; tonifying Spleen and Stomach is the method, not abandoning either root or branch. Dongyuan's emphasis on Spleen and Stomach is thus. Leukorrhea is governed by dampness, hence immediate cessation after one dose. The phrase "summer months" should be memorized rigidly.)
